So I recently learned that one of the big reasons there's so much scaffolding in NYC is because a college student was hit with debris that fell off the side of a building in the '70s and she died. So the city made a law that any building (I think over 5 stories) has to be inspected every 5 years. There's an episode of How To with John Wilson that covers it that's really good!

I read that streets in Europe such as Paris and Venice are great for pedestrians because you are constantly revealing new sceneries as you walk, whereas most of North American cities were built for cars so you can already see what’s on the end of a straight street and that makes it much less fun to walk. Plus buildings and signs are built in the car scale, meaning you have to walk for extra time to get to another store or neighborhood
