I love what you’ve been doing. It appears you’ve outgrown your studio! Like Emily Powell, you need a place where you can have people come and buy. You need a barn on your property! I’ve been following you for awhile. You really are amazing. Can’t wait for you to publish a book…not a how to, just lots of pictures! I love “happy art”.

I’ve been struggling with life lately. Your videos are definitely inspiring me to better my art and practice. More than that, they’re making me question my rigid approach to life. Watching you paint and learn, I’m truly inspired to embrace life with its flaws and beauty. Thank you. Your videos are a lot more valuable than you know ❤

Despite consuming art videos voraciously since 2016 the algorithm has only seen fit to show me your channel now. Why? Why youtube!!!!!???? I've watched about 10 of your videos in the last few days. It's so good to see an artist who is working loosely and using their materials to their full advantage. The first video I watched featured oil pastel and it was so gratifying to see you jump straight in to breaking the pastel and using it in large gestural strokes. On top of that, you are just so engaging and fun to watch. One question: what is the difference between those Flashe paints and acrylic gouache, besides that the Flashe paints come in industrial quantities, while acrylic gouache is in tiny tubes that have a high $$$$?

Great video, Sandi. I think the new evolution of your painting is very exciting. I too love your figures. They are so intriguing and full of character. You are right to acknowledge that one of the things we all want in your work is "the story". You introduce it, and let the viewer complete the plot.

Like someone else said, I use the white neocolor 1 as resist. I like to draw the moon and also the little blips of sunlight/moonlight on water, then paint over it with ink or watercolor and the white shows through to very lovely effect. It can also be like secret writing/drawing, if you make a bunch of scribbles and then paint over it to reveal what you've drawn. Thanks for another enjoyable video of your process.

the neocolour 1 will be good for resist areas of your paintings. Basically I use them to create something like snow on a mountain and then paint over it with watercolour and it stays white because it will resist the water.

I watch a lot of historical shows on artists and I see what is left for us to observe and I would say I assume that they as in masters have a percived finised evolution mostly perceived finished or fine-tuned, because they’re not alive anymore and I find I take cues and glean practices from that. But getting a feel for your steps is so appreciated and welcomed. I am trying to find my rhythm after many years of not doing my art ( raising kids ) and when I hear you say it sounds like not such a big deal. But of course it is and thanks for sharing!

Love your videos, thanks for sharing your process and thoughts of what is working for you. Funny but recently realized I spend too much effort and energy in my sketchbooks so will be doing a lot more on loose paper. Also you can put a lot of loose sketches on the studio wall to study, see progress etc. Also quick sketches could be more affordable for folks to buy...and still have original art.

Hey Sandi ❤ love the direction your art is going! The bins are a fabulous idea it could really work well for you. You tend to have themes like 'lakes and ponds', "birds" or still life. Which is good for that storage method. I started sorting my work by theme instead of chronologically. It's such a game changer!! It's really really helpful for customers who look for something specific like "still life" and they can look through one bin of work instead of hunting around for it. Oh and I bought several huge itoya portfolios for myself. I have work I will never try to sell.❤ I have those categorized by type..." work just for me" "reference art" to repaint..."art to scan for prints" "children's book character work ups" oh and a massive one for my collage papers. I can highly recommend getting some of these for saving your other paintings. I know you enjoy painting using your work as a reference and this is a really nice way to be able to flip through things quickly and store them long term on the shelves. I bought 3 more several yrs ago and they're only swatches on papers I love to paint on. So I don't swatch inside sketchbooks anymore at all. I hope you're having a lovely Christmas season 🎄 with your family.😊

@KikiFu
@KikiFu 6 ай бұрын
@@sandihester I think the largest Itoya is 18x24. So if the giant paintings are larger you might need a separate kind of rig. 💡So I'm just brainstorming here...but what if you used those Krystal sleeves and added those sturdy tabs with holes to the sleeves. It would make flipping through pretty easy I think. Or you could make something all Fancy and have your fabulous sewing Mom make some traditional French portfolios with rings in them. That way they wouldn't shift around as much 🤔 It would be nice to flip through for reference painting. Whatever you decide I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out 😁

This makes so much sense to me. I think my best art is in my sketchbook. It's just so fresh. People want to buy but I just can't break up my sketchbook. My hubs has bought me a really nice block of Arches that I usually reserve for commissions but I don't like doing commissions since they are the opposite of fresh. And, yes, that is exactly why I love your sketchbook work, just so fun and playful.

This is such a coincidence! I just made that switch too. I sold some drawings that I had done on a3 loose paper that were basically sketches. And remembered how many times I've been asked to sell a certain sketch and I couldn't because it was in my sketchbook. I love the idea of putting your paper paintings in bins to look through! I had a table at a small Christmas show recently and people were most interested my 11 x 17s. They are more accessible physically in that you can just leaf through them, but also more accessible cost-wise. Hooray to a potential figure drawing course! This is where I’m weakest in my art practice, I think, so I would love to work on those skills. 🙌

You put the acrylic paint In those little tubs and then put the lid on , do they dry out at all , or do you use them the same day? Also it would be great to be able to buy some more affordable art like your sketches. I’ll never be rich enough to be able to buy $600 framed paintings, so this would be great idea for you to make more regular money. ❤

I have been noticing a great deal of change in your art! I haven't been watching from the beginning, BUT I have watched the beginning and it has been fun to watch your changes! I remember when you braved the outdoors and now it is hard to find you inside! LOL! I know that when I started taking classes outside in the summers, it changed my world of painting! I actually painted in all sizes of paper and didn't discover painting in sketchbooks until after I had some serous health problems that took my words! It was a strange time! Plus I am certified ADHD. LOL! BY the way, you need some "FRENCH" ULTRAMARINE blue. That is the one that leans towards purple and is my favorite! It is usually more expensive and I don't know if it is made in Basic. You could mix in a wee bit of quinacridone rose or red. I paint mostly in watercolors and it does make a difference there. It is more granulating. You could probably buy larger containers of Basics, but they wouldn't be as portable. Having a bigger pot for the studio would be easy, though.

I really hate that Fabriano Studio Watercolour, one of my nemeses. 😂 Should really use it up and maybe I'll try coating it. Thanks for the idea! Idk why I haven't done it before as I regularly coat my sketchbooks with matt medium. 🤷 Lastly, the paintings/sketches of Uju were fabulous! Thanks for sharing.

Interesting video. After reading a book on art from a spiritual perspective, I’ve been going off-script and tryingggg to paint what I “hear”. Not easy and some crappy art, but I’ve been a bit amazed at the story and meaning that results! I’ve been using a big spiral pad of Stonehenge Legion White, so I don’t feel too “precious”. I like your conversation about rethinking what and how you’re creating. Another step in the process. Also, like you, I’ve been trying to focus on using what I use and just replacing. I miss bigger hauls sometimes, though. Thanks, as always, for sharing!❤️

Hey Sandi! I loved your sketchbook tutorial…I had been about to order more when you made that video! I looked around my studio and I didn’t have printmaking paper so I used Bristol paper. It’s much thicker and I wasn’t sure about it, but the great thing is you can throw a ton of paint and water at it and it doesn’t really buckle. I’ve painted both sides heavily and it holds up with your pretreatment! I may create some loose leaf as well as I look towards selling more work. Thanks for everything you do!

Sandi there is an artist called Bronte Leighton-Dore who does very loose, almost abstract landscapes and still life’s that remind me of your sketchbook work. However she does them straight onto canvas, leaving a lot of blank white canvas. They are beautiful, and it made me wonder if you could use any of her ideas as a springboard for further work. I love that you are doing paintings for sale en plein air and I agree, there is an immediacy to plein air work that studio works sort of lose in the translation. I LOVE your videos. Hi Sandi! I gave your homemade sketchbooks a try. What fun they are to make. I made two so far (9x7). I am working on the covers today. I liked your collage one. You’ve inspired me so much to get out of my comfort zone and just “play”. And Dick Blick thanks you too 🤣. I order from them monthly and often wonder if they associate my purchases to your videos. 🤣😂. I found this great tape that finishes off the edge of the sketchbook. Although its only white, it can be decorated and its 2” thick and sticks really great and is similar to color as the heavy canson watercolor paper I used for the covers. Its called white gaffers tape, heavy duty. Amazon. Thanks so much for making all the great videos. 👏👏👏

Painting in sketchbooks gives you (me) an unconscious message that is very freeing: Play! Experiment! Dare! While painting on papers that can be sold, put the selling idea in your (my) head. But you’ll (I’ll) get past it and it will become natural.

It doesn’t get in my head at this point. It’s also much lighter which is nice

Thank you Sandi. Its good to hear you will be selling. Id love to get my hands on a piece. Also, do you think you'll ever do a " figures " class? That would be something I'm extremely interested in. Your figures are just so dam cute.

Hi Sandi, I have watched most of your videos and love your work and approach to painting! I was so excited to apply everything I learned, especially loosing up my painting. I made a large sketchbook following your video, primed all the pages and couldn’t wait to fill it up. But… I really had a hard time covering those large spaces without a photo reference and not fussing over the composition and line work. It became a muddy mess and I am so discouraged. Do you have any suggestions?

Great video, as always I'm loving every second!!! Agree on the versatility of loose sheets along with sketchbook. I've been doing both for some time. Are you still using softbody? Or pricing to basics? Do you add matte medium or a paint to take off the shine? I have some basics and mix them in. Occasionally I get the shiny finish. Hmmm... just wondering. If you're swamped and don't reply I understand-Lue

It switching to basics just adding in a few colors that I like. When mixed in with my other soft body it’s not too shiny

Do you spray your palette (with the open pots of paint) with water often to keep it from drying out? Adore your work and evolving style!!

Sometimes I give them a squirt but they are usually fine. I have a whole class where I share everything about my acrylics, how I care for them, store, varnish , etc if you’re interested

you should maybe experiment with adding a couple of your reds with some of the orange and see if you can make a custom colour

Save your cardboard boxes and make portfolios out of them. Of course make sure you to use some glassine liners to protect the work. I love the idea of prepping the papers ahead of time. I forget which video you tell us about the mixture. Can you use any kind of medium on top of that sizing you came up with?

I had no idea you were from my area. I heard you say Centennial Park, and I decided I would look up your bio to see if you lived near another Centennial Park somewhere. It said you live in Franklin, and so do I. Hi neighbor! I hope to see you around some time!

@sandihester I read it wrong. 😄 It said your Grandmother lived in Franklin and that's where you learned to paint at her kitchen table. Still fun you live nearby. I have watched your videos for a while now.

I’m loving the figures - ( But !!!) I’m not keen on the writing on the actual painting… I feel like it interferes & interrupts my enjoyment of the image ( I rarely even like signatures on work, unless very considered in their placement !) writing is another ‘mark’ after-all and if not as considered as the rest of the painting, it just interferes !! That’s a very wordy comment !!! 😅

And it’s not good for you too put acrylics on your skin and leave it there for while you paint. Especially since you have a tendency to develop all allergies. A nice box of 100 disposable well -fitting gloves would be perfect for you. I think Dick BLICK sells them also especially for artists but you can get 100 at the grocery store for under $10. Should last you a year!!
