Old VHS tapes make excellent telltales! Also, the tape is reflective and can be used as a very light wing "windsock" as the tape moves with the slightest breeze and can be seen very far

Brilliant! Excellent subject and simple but intuitive visualization tool for little or no cost. I'd have loved to see some stalls with those on so we can see which part of the wing stalls first in various types of stalls. I'd also love to see those on for a soaring day so we can see what happens to those streamers in strong lift or even weak rotor. As simple as this is, it goes a long way to help make one a better pilot by SEEING what we typically have to feel and visualize by analogy (e.g. what is the wind actually doing around the wing). Well done, sir.

Very good illustration of wing tip vorticies, now people can see why tip stall is first to occur.
@FrekeOne5 жыл бұрын
I thought it was last.
@johannel41415 жыл бұрын
@@FrekeOne Wingtip stall is unlikely to occur symmetrically, especially if the aircraft is maneuvering. As an aircraft turns, the wing tip on the inside of the turn is moving more slowly and is most likely to stall. As an aircraft rolls, the descending wing tip is at higher angle of attack and is most likely to stall. As this applies mostly to Paragliders, Aircraft will stall the root first, YES you are correct there. I had to look at the dihedral effect, "the aircraft will tend to slip to the stall side.."and paragliding you send most in a slip, because we not able to out run the wing from the side's. So the lee-ward side tip will stall as the wind ward side will fly cause a uncontrolled "turn" which effect is a slip for a while before the pilot can react and turn. If we look at to late and to low the wing will slip, and the tip stalls only for a second before the it will twist or turn before you can re act, you end up with a helicopter. regards

great idea (experiment) to show us some wing aerodynamics. a couple of questions: 1. what type of radios do you use? 2. what type and size of wing are you flying? Portugal looks beautiful. If I wasn't planning an Israel trip this fall, I'd go visit you in Portugal. Hopefully, someday soon! thanks for sharing.

I loved seeing the turbulent area behind your harness. Can you do a similar test with the tail tales? attached to different harnesses? Rumor is you can gain or lose a point in glide with just a harness.

Please try installing a winglet :P Maybe a carboard/stiff foam extension? Curious to see if it helps with the wingtip vortex. Also curious if Advance's signature 'winglet' has any impact... maybe they should lend you a wing for testing!

While I know Nothing of parakickassgliding (what a fun looking sport!), I can learns' ya something regarding tale-tales. (this is my own creation, it works great!) Draw a line parallel to the flow. Cut (yes, not yarn, cut) some tale tales out of that nylon stuff (I used to know it as rip-stop-nylon) Let's use 4" for this example. On the line you've drawn, place the tale tales pointing backwards (yes, really) every 3" This will make them overlap when flying giving a nice strong solid line. If they deviate, it shows up. Try it just once. Every time I'd do this on a boat I was racing people would love it. It gives extra 'pop.'

You can fly without a speed system. Many do. Just be selective of the weather you fly In and the environment.
