Can Burnt Food Really Give You Cancer?
www.seeker.com/can-burnt-food...
"In 2002, researchers at Stockholm University found that starchy foods, when heated to 120 degrees Celsius, created a kind of byproduct chemical called acrylamide. The chemical is produced by a reaction between asparagine, a non-essential amino acid, and certain sugars like fructose. Significantly, the chemical is not found in unheated foods."
How We Realized Putting Radium in Everything Was Not the Answer
www.theatlantic.com/health/ar...
"Beginning in the 1910s, the girls instructed to put radium in their mouths didn't bat an eyelash. They worked for the United States Radium Corporation painting the numbers and hands on watch faces and military instrument panels. Since the work required great detail, the women were told to "point" the small brush head with their lips, thus ingesting a small amount of radium every time. Each woman would repeat this hundreds of times a day."
Dark Lives Of 'The Radium Girls' Left A Bright Legacy For Workers, Science
www.npr.org/2017/04/22/5250630...
"Kate Moore's new book The Radium Girls is about the young women who were poisoned by the radium paint - and the five who sued United States Radium in a case that led to labor safety standards and workers' rights advances."

It would not have happened if companies actually researched their product before advertising it. They lied all those people of it being healthy, when in fact they just made it up. Corporate greed is what killed them, and still companies are poorly regulated in this part.

Not all the Radium Girls died young; one that survived into her 90s was Charlotte Purcell. Her radium sickness manifested as a tumour in her arm and she chose amputation, which saved her life. She still suffered tooth loss and jaw issues but she lived to a ripe old age. Also, most people at the time weren't too bothered about a group of poor working class women dying; it was when a rich celebrity man (Eben Byers) died from radium poisoning (most of his teeth fell out, he had both jaws removed cuz they were crumbling to dust and holes formed in his skull; at the end of his life, he had to wrap his disintegrating head in bandages to stop it falling apart), that the general public began to take notice and the radium craze came to an end.

Uhh... so i lived in Gloucester City, NJ for upwards of 7 years. I moved there when i was about 16 and moved out of there when i was about 23 or 24. At the end of my living there i was told by a friend that also lived in the town that her children's doctor was giving them special pills because there was radium in the water for the city. Apparently, there used to be a radium factory or something right where they drew their water from. By 25 almost all of my teeth had broken off, and i was told by my dentist that i could loose what was left of my teeth and get dentures, or i could lose my jaw. I obviously chose to get dentures. I had an "infection" that wouldn't respond to any antibiotics. What i want to know is... could that have been caused by radium in the water?

Even in 1925, corporations were shafting their employees. And it is this reason why self regulation in the free market can never work to everyone's satisfaction. That corporations don't give a damn if someone gets irradiated, and then makes out the women had syphyllis is so despicable that the company should've been charged with defamation.

The sad part is we still haven't changed much when it comes to safety and prevention. We don't seek to prevent something from happening or make it safer until it actually causes someone critical harm, usually a large group of people or kills them.

So here's what I'm wondering.... Clearly this was ingested by the masses and not everyone died or was effected in terrible ways. So... At which levels of ingestion does it become dangerous and at which levels is it survivable and possibly beneficial? Everyone talks about the dangers... But not everyone exposed was effected to such a degree. I want something more comprehensive. Because it was VERY popular to drink the radium water... What about those who only gained the beneficial effects and somehow escaped damages? Let's hear a story on them.

There is a bit of misinformation on this video. Radium butter, condoms etc. did not contain any actual radium. It was only a brand name. Kinda like how many products today are labeled as "Titanium" even trough they do not actually contain any. Also, there was no Radium Toothpaste. There was Montazite toothpaste which had a tiny bit of radioactive thorium but it wasnt really a very dangerous amount

Radium itself as pure material was way too expensive for quackery products (higher than gold, likely the most expensive metal of its time), but they contained uranium ore, which is radioactive enough to cause harm (especially by ingestion and inhaling) and naturally contains a tiny amount of radium. But often the name "Radium" (like the lightbulb brand) was simply an advertising buzzword (much like "laser" in 1980th) because it was precious and associated with the newest modern hightech of its era.
