How does DNA testing work?
www.bbc.co.uk/science/0/20205874
"Parental, forensic and genetic testing look for similarities in the genetic markers between two biological samples. Because all cells in the body contain exactly the same DNA, samples can be taken from almost anywhere in the body, including skin, hair follicles, blood and other bodily fluids."
How is genetic testing done?
ghr.nlm.nih.gov/primer/testin...
Once a person decides to proceed with genetic testing, a medical geneticist, primary care doctor, specialist, or nurse practitioner can order the test. Genetic testing is often done as part of a genetic consultation. Genetic tests are performed on a sample of blood, hair, skin, amniotic fluid (the fluid that surrounds a fetus during pregnancy), or other tissue.
The family history: the first genetic test, and still useful after all those years?
www.nature.com/gim/journal/v14...
"The family history has its origins in genealogy and over the past century has become embedded in clinical practice. Its importance in specialized circumstances is unquestioned but largely untested. Moreover, the relevance of the family history to common diseases, especially in an era of genomic markers that convey risk and the emphasis on 'personalized medicine,' must be given careful scrutiny."

I don’t know if you caught that bit about Maple Syrup Urine Disease, but we spent so much time looking into it later! I wanted to share it, but it didn’t make it into the video. MSUD a super-rare dietary disorder and it is fascinating. People who have MUSD must have a special diet their whole lives, because their body cannot process certain amino acids (protein building blocks). It affects 1 in 185,000 infants worldwide and *can* cause serious problems if it goes untreated. The fact that Amy, a Canadian, had a disorder with the name "maple syrup" really caught us off-guard, but hopefully, the fact that Amy is a carrier can help raise awareness! Vaya con science!

And btw.. which test did you two take? the 23andme or another one? And if it was 23andme, did you take the 99 or 199 version, and how satisfied were you?

Trace Dominguez What complications?
@ursaltydog
@ursaltydog 7 жыл бұрын
Is Amy sure she doesn't already have this issue, instead of being merely a carrier? The reason I ask is, that mutations in the specific genes that create MSUD, cause the body not to be able to break down proteins from particular, protein-rich foods such as dairy products, meat, soy, gluten, eggs, nuts, whole grains, seeds, Mutation in any of these genes reduces or eliminates the function of the enzyme complex, preventing the normal breakdown of isoleucine, leucine, and valine. She's already been identified as lactose intolerant... Tell her to be aware of any symptoms that may indicate a late onset of the disorder in herself.

Maple syrup urine disease is an inherited disorder in which the body is unable to process certain protein building blocks (amino acids) properly. The condition gets its name from the distinctive sweet odor of affected infants' urine and is also characterized by poor feeding, vomiting, lack of energy (lethargy), and developmental delay. If untreated, maple syrup urine disease can lead to seizures, coma, and death.

Eman 08 yes but agian when someonr says mexican do they typically think of a specific mezo american look ? ya when someone says Mexican they mean mezo american. technically race is such a fluid word it can mean specific mezos from mexico or the entire modern gene pool of mezo so yes you can be racist toward mexicans and you can have mexican DNA also is german a race .... no but it will show up as part of your dna origin so yes you can test DNA and it can comback mexican mexico isnt as mixed as the carribean

pale blue dot Again Mexican is a nationality, you can be black, white, native American, Asian mixed race. Ask the same question what does an American look like, are they all white people? 😂😂😂 just like I said about Mitt Romney's father and he's a white Mexican born. Christina Aguleria's father is Ecuadorian and she's white. My father is a white boy with blonde hair and blue eyes with the last name Ortiz and his grandparents are from Puerto Rico. Even Trace Dominguez is mostly white as he's a White Caribbean just like my father as Trace looks like someone from Spain.

Im Ethiopian and I did a DNA test a while ago and my biggest two areas was East Africa and Middle Eastern/North Africa. Then I found out I had European in me and < 0.1% Native American (What!?). Im not sure if I should trust in the Native part but a lot of people related to me on 23andme have Native American and Oceanian 🤗 I had a bit unassigned but DNA test for East Africans are a bit sketchy (because most don't have as much testings on us) so it's hard to know if the results are accurate enough lol.

There is unconclusive evidence of certain species of plants native from central and north america being present on ritual burials on Africa as far as 8000 years ago [with Tutankamon´s cocaine_in_his_hair being just the most famous]. It would not be impossible for any ship able to cross the Mediterranean Sea on a regular basis to do the same through the Atlantic with a lower probability of success (and back with some imported people in them to replace the lost crew members).

Native Americans ARE Asian, by heritage. They migrated across the Beringian land bridge (that used to exist between Siberia and Alaska) thousands of years ago. Then they spread out through all of the Americas (North, Central, & South America). I wish these DNA test websites would include this human history lesson in their explanations, because I have seen it confuse a shitload of people.

It is. DNA can be used to tell if you are German vs. British. That doesn't mean German and British are two different races.

Kivalt Depends how you define race there are many different groups of humanity like the mongoloids, Caucasians, etc... If they want to call it a race they can. Each "race" has fundamental differences in face structure and pigmentation.
