No Trains Here.
On a frigid November afternoon in 1992 I was overcome by the urge to make videos of planes coming and going at Denver's Stapleton Airport. So I did. Spent a couple of hours at three different locations. Have no idea what possessed me that day. Anyway, figured I might as well share the results in the off chance that anyone out there is interested in airplanes -- and we all know what Lucius Beebe thought of those things.

Thanks for posting this! This is very rare footage not only of Stapleton, but of aircraft that you don't really see flying anymore.

I very vividly remember watching the panes taxi across I-70 when I was a kid. My parents took me out to Stapleton the last night it was open to watch the last flight leave...an airplane-loving kid's dream! Thanks for posting!

Thanks for uploading this! I remember my parents taking my brother and I out to that road to watch the planes land at night in the '80s. This was back before hush and noise kits were around, so it was pretty loud when the old DC9 and 727 would come screaming over, even at low power. I guess that stuck with me as I'm now an airline pilot!

I wish that Stapleton International Airport would be recommissioned, even if it meant decommissioning Denver International Airport. But really, I think Denver, CO could use both of them active because of the importance of Denver to air traffic. I know I'm only a simulator pilot (FlightGear) but I share the feelings of many real life pilots that wish Stapleton was still open. Yes it had its flaws, but so does current Denver Intl. Expand the city and recommission old Stapleton I say.

Thanks for parking next to the milepost. Until now, I never knew exactly where that bridge was. I've been across it in a 727-100 in 1990. But I didn't visit the city again until I was driving a truck in 1999, and many times since. The bridge is long gone of course, and the freeway is twice as wide now at milepost 280.

Thank you for a great video and a trip down memory lane! I miss the old Stapleton Airport and all of the great spots to plane watch...including the runway and taxi ways that went right over I-70! Also great to see all of the old liveries, especially the United DC. Those were the days...

I live in Denver since 1996 (Stapleton closed in 1995) always wanted to see how the airport operated especially that runaway that crossed I-70, and this is a great video. Thank you for sharing. I bet the airport is missed...

Oleg Dobrovolskiy That overpass used to confuse the heck out of drivers on I-70. I worked at the airport and had to experience a traffic jam almost every day. North of I-70 at taxiway t-6 was a 3 sided concrete wall (We mechanics called it Fort Apache), where aircraft could do high power run ups without the noise bothering people stupid enough to buy a house next to an airport.

This is sooooooo awesome!!!!! I spent many, many days and nights in that spot watching planes land. Love it and I miss it a ton. Stapleton was crowded, a pain in the ass and God forbid if you didn't get held up on the taxiways!!! But I loved it all!!! Thank for this video. Priceless!!!

Been there, done that! Standing/sitting in the freezing cold watching flight ops. Never can one moment of watching flight ops be considered wasted! BTW, I never flew into Stapleton (I have flown into & out of DIA), but I remember when I worked for Comair that when the WX was bad at Denver, Stapleton became a huge bottleneck. DIA is not perfect, but it's much better during irregular ops. I love the new Frontier, and they now have Southwest!

This is 4 blocks from home. We spent Lot of time watching the planes fly over head. It was great. Havana and Moline interchange. That old road is about to be redirected. And since the $ 500.00.00 to more than 2 million dollar homes now sit on where the old runways live, it's surreal. Right now the old traffic control tower is being converted to an entertainment development with restaurants and a bowling alley its unbelievable what's going in that area. And the price of homes given Denvers high housing costs, it's unbelievable how someone can live here.

I grew up in Buffalo, NY & the spring before I would start my freshman year of HS (Class of '88 so you do the math) my mom moved my younger brother & I to the Town of Cheektowaga, a large suburb that boarders the eastern side of the City of Buffalo, is larger by geographic size, has four High Schools & School Districts, a mall, 4 grocery stores, is cut in half by the NYS Thruway (I-90), 3 zip codes, and in the old land line telephone days 4 different exchanges which told you what part of town someone lived in based on the first three digits of their phone #. But what made the town so big was that the Buffalo International Airport is located in Cheektowaga, 4 miles from the city line. A section of the main runway is actually in the Town of Williamsville, which boarders Cheektowaga to the north. We lived 1 1/2 miles down the street from the airport, our street was off Genesee St which is the address of BUF. My High School was less than a mile from the airport and situated directly under the flight path of the main runway, and I mean right under, and at that short a distance you know what that means. The HS was built in 1961, literally just as jets were beginning to come into use at BUF so they obviously didn't think about the noice. Living in Cheektowaga, esp around where we lived the sound of jets taking off and landing was normal. It took us awhile to get used to it. Esp in the late spring into early fall when it was warm. The school and most of the residents didn't have a/c so windows were always open which caused TV volumes to go up and down every 5-10 min, when I'd be talking on the phone in the kitchen and sitting at the table next to the window & a plane flew by (the planes flew past us, not over us, so we got the noise as it passed by) I'd have to cover the phone and couldn't really talk anyway. And at school our teachers more often than not had to literally stop talking because they couldn't spend all day raising their voices to be heard. And certain jets, like the 727's and DC-9's were the loudest. You could hear them approach the .knew t they lifted off the ground, approached, flew over until they made a turn or just flew far enough away. And from the time class's started until lunch was the worst as it was rush hour so there were more flights taking off than normal. In fact my first period classes were rough because they were almost non stop. And some of them were really loud. I used to plane spot all the time too. The end of the runway was literally 100 feet from a bust intersection and when planes took off in the opposite direction they'd taxi along the street, and when they were landing on our end of the runway if you were lucky enough to be at the red light when a Northwest or Eastern Airlines 727 was just about to touch the ground, your car would kind of move side to side. The wheels were probably less than 100 ft from the roof of the car. Anyway it's great to see all the old United & Continental livery! Along with others I remember like it was yesterday, US Air, American, Northwest, Delta, Eastern, Piedmont, Air Tran, & Pan Am. American flew MD-80's to & from ORD & LGA, United flew 737-200's ORD, CLE & DCA, Northwest 727's DTW & MSP, US Air had 10 gates so BUF was a mini hub & flew several different aircraft, Continental 737's & MD -,80's EWR, CLE & IAH, Delta 727's to ATL, Piedmont 737's & Fokker F-28's BWI, BOS, SYR. Now all that flys thru BUF are commuter jets & since Covjd half the flights are not flying . It's sad.b
