Great video. While not a Gran Turismo, I own a 2006 GranSport with the CambioCorsa (single clutch automated manual) and it has so far been a great car. I’ve done around 5000 kms and all has been perfect so far. It’s lighter and smaller than the Gran Turismo, though only came in the 4.2 as opposed to the Gran Turismo that came in 4.2 and 4.7. Absolutely no regrets here and think it’s got to be one of the best cars for the money. Love it and plan to keep it long term!
@normsallitt2753Ай бұрын
I enjoy your videos, so no offense here, Sam. But I think you're missing the entire ethos of the Granturismo and the clientele in which it was/is meant for. This is totally understandable because when I was younger, I loved and enjoyed driving my Porsches (3 911 Turbos, 2 classic 928s, Boxster S, etc), but I sold my last 911 Turbo, bought my 2017 Granturismo Sport, and haven't looked back with a single regret. These are not only luxurious (true 4-seat) grand tourers with gorgeous Pininfarina styling and also possibly have the best sounding V8 ever made, IMHO. They're also quite well planted performers on mountain roads once you put them into Sport mode, which not only opens up the exhaust valves but also stiffens up the Skyhook suspension, quickens the shift timing and improves throttle response. These cars are also very practical daily drivers that offer full-size luxury car interior space with easy ingres/egress. They're (2014 & up) also highly reliable as per my own ownership and several other people I know who own them. Lastly, the comparable cars that you mentioned aren't comparable in just about any way, shape, form, or sound metric. Their true competitors IMHO would be cars like the Bentley Continental GT V8, Aston Martin's Vantage, DB9, Vanquish, Lexus LC500, or possibly the BMW 8 & 6 series coupes. Keep up the great content and safe travels. Best regards from across the pond, Norm

MC Stradale owner (four seat/practical version) for 6 years now. Still on original clutch after 42,000 miles (but will need one soon). Car was the two first owners’ daily driver. Have had no real issues with the car. It’s needed 1 new wheel bearing (ABS sensor failure), suspension bushes, tyres and batteries - and that’s it. Driven across Europe (3,200 miles in 2 weeks) including Picos de Europa, Pyrenees, Mt Ventoux, Alps, etc. it didn’t miss a beat - completely within its element. And when you’ve filled the boot with wine, you can store your cases on the back seat! Watch out that some cars are advertised as MC Stradale when they are not really - the real ones say ‘MC Stradale’ on the passenger dash and have carbon ceramic brakes, and the F1 gearbox (with ‘1’ and ‘R’ buttons, not an automatic shifter). The single clutch gearbox is great, but needs to be driven more like a single clutch manual would be.
@WatchCorpАй бұрын
Great to see this review on your channel Sam but while you get a good number of things right about this car I think you really failed towards the end. I’ve had my 360 Modena manual for 12 years, first 5 it was my daily driver. Kids came along, the attention it got everywhere and the worry of doing stuff like leaving outside the pub overnight and the lack of usability/comfort eventually became tiresome and I retired it to become a garage queen/weekend toy. I longed for something to replace her that still gave me the fizz. There are not many cars that fit this bill whatsoever. I tried an AMG Merc for two years, tested 911’s, considered Bentley GT’s. The only car that came close to a Granturismo was the Ferrari FF but at 4x the price and still retaining the ball aches of it being too flashy and not being able to leave it anywhere I spent a year looking for the perfect Granturismo and came to a car very similar to the one you tested. The sport is certainly the one to go for, which you initially agree with but then change your mind towards the end of the video which I completely disagree with. If going for an early high mileage cheap model, it’s going to cost far more on maintenance, is much more of a slouch, the ZF’s have a much lazier software, the interior is much less sporty and will only have a 4.2. Likewise if you decide to get a stradale instead as you also suggest, you have the opposite issue of it being too sporty for day to day use, not having the ZF as an option, worries about using it daily and increased maintenance too. Most of them haven’t even got rear seats. These are even more pointless imo and you may as well get a Ferrari or similar if you want something like that. The 4.7 Sport is certainly the sweet spot in the line up as you initially agree. I absolutely love mine and while I agree with a lot of your criticisms of it I find it sublime. It’s a totally useable car on a day to day basis, I do the school run in it, my kids and missus fit in comfortably, it’s great in traffic, it’s classy but not flashy enough to be scared leaving it anywhere. Then when I’m on my own, in sport and manual mode, it becomes a totally different animal and ticks 80% of what I get from my 360. The noise is amazing, fast gear shifts, pokey enough for spirited driving. It really ticks both boxes at the same time that nothing else could possibly achieve. As for the alternatives you mention for the same money, it simply can’t be compared to mercs etc. The GT is a toned down Ferrari in every way, the others are just fast versions of the cars estate agents drive. Thanks for the review anyway but I’d suggest trying one for a few weeks if you still want to let it convince you. The GT sport has a split personality that is unrivalled and takes time to appreciate. It’ll never be as comfy as a Bentley GT or as sporty and dynamic as a supercar but I feel it gets you 80% of the way there for both depending on what mode you use her in. And with the looks and the noise, it doesn’t get much better. I can’t think of anything to replace mine with and it’s likely she’ll be my summer daily for the next decade. At the value they are, I have no qualms for this and feel it’s one of the true car bargains out there.
@kevindanzl4854Ай бұрын
I have to say the car is an absolute blast on the mountain roads here in Colorado. It goes from sluggish at slower speeds and an absolute beast when you open it up on the mountain roads. If you know how to drive the car it does become a very good sports car. I have owned a MC Stradale for four years having owned a Gransport. If you have deep pockets the Stradale is the car to go for and you have a choice of two or four seats. In terms of depreciation I was offered my purchase price back for the car two years later when I looked to trade it in for a AM DBS Carbon Black Edition. Having looked at the DBS it was even larger and felt heavier on the road and have kept the Stradale. If you look at the depreciation of a wonderful M3 Touring or a BB9 or 997 of the same era the depreciation of the Stradale is fine and it has the wonderful carbon disks and greater road presence not included in the car Sam shows as well as being considerably lighter. Look at the Jayemm review of the car. If you don't want to stetch to the more expensive GTs cars - I would not discount the Gransport which in the right colour is a great alternative.

One thing about the "Driving Dynamics" : Let's be clear the Maserati GT is no pig to drive, it's a well handling car. The reality of driving in the UK with police and speed cameras and all the rest of it, is that this car gives you plenty of road-legal driving enjoyment. Just listen to the sonorous V8 open up slowly as you waft your way up to 60mph on a decent country road...it's perfect for that.

Nailed it. I think Sam completely missed the point of the Granturismo. Also, at no point in this video did I watch him row through the gears in the higher rpm range, going through a few twists and turns, which is where these cars shine, IMHO. Also, the cars he mentioned as comparable to the GT are somewhat laughable in just about any metric imaginable. Maybe Sam will understand the GT better in ten years or so when he gets a little older and more "mature," lol.

Corrosion issue is limited to the front sub frame, and not horrendous to sort. Similar issues affect many modern cars. Mechanically it’s a lot more reliable than an S6.3AMG Merc, which can leave you with a £60K bill for a new engine… I also have a 991.1 GT4S, that I’ve owned from new, and the Maserati is far more reliable than that! Performance air filter, sway bars, and coilovers make a significant positive difference to the performance and handling. He quotes a couple of Mercs, a Jag and a Lexus.. Hmm...yeah, ok. But a Merc is just a Merc, a Lexus is just a Lexus. A Maserati? That's just - different. There is an indefinable quality of the Maserati GT - just like there is really no logical reason for listening to music on Vinyl Records when digital is better, but vinyl has a certain kudos...likewise, the Maserati has that kudos that other things in this range do not have. I promise you - the next car up that would get close for kudos to this would be a Ferrari California - and against hat, the Maserati GT looks splendid value for money.

It’s certainly more comparable to the cars you listed, I was amazed at the cars he compared it to, certainly apples and oranges! As for the Gen 2 stradale though, I feel you completely lose the daily comfort and usability the Sport offers. It’s no good in traffic, shouty all the time and is also much more money putting into a different league when looking at the competition. I think this ends up losing a lot that the sport has to offer which is effectively two cars in one. If you want something sporty all the time, there are better options.

Interesting perspective! They are indeed grand tourers, though I´ve always looked at the GranTurismo as sort of an italian muscle car - big V8, front engine rear drive, space for more than two. A car just as content (it seems) with lumbering around in "D" as it is with the flappies constantly, well, flapped😅. Prices here in Norway are bit higher - £35k for a 2007 model with 111k kilometers on the clock. Most cars hover around £50-60k.

But he thinks the dynamics aren’t good enough (it’s a GT not a supercar duh) and thinks an amg merc, a Lexus or something with 2 seats (apples vs oranges) is a better buy? Can’t see how any Ferrari fan would think that. He even goes as far to suggest a cheap high mileage 4.2 would be a better buy, or that you spend double and get a stradale that is less practical, useable and has plenty of better competition if you want a 2 seat sports car. Madness. Then he says he prefers “the pinnacle” stuff instead?!? Yes mate we all do, but you’re not going to get that for £30k. Not seeing the wood from the trees comes to mind.

This is one of the few cars that looks nicer in pictures than in real life. Guy in my neighborhood used to have one. There is something off with the straight edges and the way the rear wheel sits in the body. Racing green XKR has the opposite situation going.

As an owner of the GT Sport with paddle shifts for the last 3 years, no issues with the clutch so far (or anything else). Makes a difference at high speeds as it shifts faster. A lot of car for your money and if well maintained, running costs are not that bad. One of the only 2+2 in this class that actually can transport 4 adults without any hassle. A great all rounder and with Pirelli sotto zero tyres, you can daily drive it in winter too.
@rafibalouzian9951Ай бұрын
Drive it in manual sport only and the clutch will last 60 - 80k+ miles . My 2005 Quattroporte has 62k on the original clutch

I get a lot of similar comments about my Ghibli. Too many other cars make more sense, it's unreliable , outdated etc. All those might be true to some, but having come out of Jaguars and BMWs I can only say that this car makes me smile every time I walk past, or someone asks a question about it (which happens a lot, and never happened with any of my BMWs) But ultimately, my big, slow, heavy, outdated Chrysler switchgear laden Ghibli puts the biggest smile on my face when I fire it up , hit the sport button and go pretty much anywhere. And that's everything I wanted and needed from it.

Helpful review mate, cheers. Got to say I started searching after this 😂 As a nice daily wafter, if you cover miles, the diesel Ghibli and Levante look like bargains!

Okay so I actually have an MC, bought it 4 years ago for $60k w 20k miles, & I daily drive it. Really daily drive it, & Its the most reliable car I've ever owned. Yes really, that 4.7 F136Y is bulletproof. Ive owned lots of Mercedes, C124 included, & yes this is somehow more reliable. Yes really

I seriously considered a Gran Turismo. Loved the sound and the idea it had a Ferrari derived engine. At the same time, that is what scared me about it. I ended up going with the Jaguar XKR, which I truly love.

I was between buying one of these or a PDK Boxster. I ultimately bought the Porsche and it’s great but could not stop thinking about the Italian V8!!

As someone who's owned both, plus 2 911 Turbos and 2 928's, I can 100% tell you that you made a purchasing error. The Maserati Granturismo 4.7 is an absolutely phenomenal car... plus the looks and sounds are simply amazing. Fyi, I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just trying to give you my personal first-hand experience. Unless you were looking for a highly dynamic sports car, then you made the correct choice. 👍

I think the Gran Turismo is a gorgeous car. One thing that I believe must be addressed are the wheel offsets. All of the stock Maserati wheels are tucked so far in, they look terrible. They need 20mm spacers immediately!

I bought a CPO 2019 GranTurismo Convertible, and I've been watching the market on them. I'm starting to notice that the pricing for a used 2018 - 2019 are starting to go up.
@jonathancollard3710Ай бұрын
People have always looked at this car the wrong way… it’s not a sports car… it’s a GT. Think of it as a more aggressive Jaguar XJR or perhaps reworked Ferrari 456. The 2+2 seating genuinely works.

The design is absolutely wonderful and aged so well 😍😍😍 but as you say "it's big"😅 and I totally agree it makes it somekind of italian Challenger or CLS coupe, not my cup of tea, I wish dimensions were those of these 3200 and 4200 which were in line with my expectations... but yes if sound and design are what you are looking for and you need usable back seats might make sense

It's a beautiful car, it sounds incredible, but the maintenance is almost if not more costly than a Ferrari. Parts take forever to arrive from the factory (and hopefully it's the correct part that arrives). Cheers, great video. One of my all time favorite cars.

Essentially the reason these are valued less than they might be on paper is that they're the car enthusiast's idea of a bare minimum commuter car - something that's not deathly boring to drive, reasonably practical, looks inoffensive, can overtake a lorry, your wife can drive it, and your kids and/or dogs can fit in the back. It's to the 2010s what the Ford Mondeo was to the 1990s.

Love the maserati brand, especially the granturismo and the ghibli but the saddest part is the mpg on these vehicles. Especially in California with gas prices that are around $6 a gallon, and the granturismo gets 13 mpg in the city and the ghibli gets 16 mpg

I had my 4.7 mc shift model 6 year, I loved it, paid £32,500 for it in 2016 and sold in 2022 for £27,500 and I spent around £8000 on maintenance in that time I drive an Audi r8 v8 manual now, better car for me, but only 2 seats

£180 a month to own and run a Maserati. You can't complain about that at all. (Excluding insurance, road tax and fuel).

The GranTurismo is beautiful but I’d still slightly like the Quattroporte more. 4 door saloon with a hidden 4.7 Ferrari derived V8. It can definitely hold its own and can be a beast when you need it to be.

I'd be interested to know your thoughts on drawing a direct comparison to an Aston Martin DB9 Volante, which is a 5.9l, 450bhp, luxury cruiser, available for sub £30k, from around the same era. The main distinction I can draw without driving both is that the Maserati has aged way better with regard to its styling. The DB9 looks like an 'old' Aston, but the Maserati arguably looks like it could have been produced in the last 5 years.
