[Hunt For A Classic] Lancia 037 Stradale

My hunt for a classic car continues and whilst in Geneva, I get the opportunity to get behind one of the greatest Lancia's ever made, the 037 Stradale.
The Lancia 037 was a mid-engine sports car and rally car built by Lancia in the early 1980s to compete in the FIA Group B World Rally Championship. Driven by Markku Alén, Attilio Bettega, and Walter Röhrl, the car won Lancia the manufacturers' world championship in the 1983 season. It was the last rear-wheel drive car to win the WRC.

Walter Röhrl once admitted in an interview that if he‘d crashed this car he’d have died because of the cars fragile body work and frame. As a result he decided not to crash though.

At the time some people around him asked about his sanity because he agreed to rally the flimsy 037. Because if you have a bad crash, you're in big trouble. Then he said that would be no problem, as he didn't plan to crash. And he didn't. But 037's where crashed. Also fatally. But yes, when asked about the best car to drive, he answers the Lancia 037. As many others, I have also asked him this question.

@@richardwintle1020 Porsche was trying hard at the Ring to brake an important time barrier, with the 918, all their fastest, young test drivers where in. Röhrl was only going to do PR shots, and drove with worn tires and a full tank. Then he did something he sometimes do, he decided to go for it. He did not brake the barrier, belive they wanted to go sub 6 min. But he went faster than all the young guns. One of them thought he should commemorate Röhrl, and strike up a conversation. Röhrl asked: "How old are you?" The bloke answered his age. Röhrl said: "Remember this day in 30 years, then you're as old as I am now." The distance between a fool and a genius, an a-hole and honesty, can be a very thin line.

The Italian element in this car is everything not just the bad parts ... but anyway you should consider the Lancia Delta HF Integrale, is definitely cheaper still beautiful and more daily drive focused, meaning without the parts that you mentioned as difficult to live with. Also in black is just gorgeous!!!

@@Mexxx65 Nooooo...you're not! Sorry, David B. and Mac, other than the centre section of the body that is almost the same in appearance to the Monte Carlo, they have nothing in common. The Monte Carlo is a mid-engined Lancia Beta and, in truth, was never much good to drive (a lot of problems with front brakes locking up too easily). The 037 is a different league in every way.

Build a Monte-Carlo with Delta Integrale headlights! You can swap engine and upgrade brakes and suspension and you actually have a baby 037 with good perf and impressive handling

i really hope lancia comes back... how such an awesome car brand that used to produce absolute rally monster has come down to only selling a , well basically a fiat 500... i really hope fiat will make this happen.... bring lancia back , bring a new delta integrale that looks like the 80's one ( my dreamcar) , make a new rwd 2 seater sportscar , and show skoda and citroen again who is the boss in rally :)
