For me the interior has one major advantage over rivals - everything works, still has indicator stalks, no stupid haptics or overloaded steering wheel. Yes that have raided the parts bin, but so much easier on a daily basis to interact with than most of its rivals, no proding and swiping multiple times with your eyes not on the road. How good an interior looks is pointless if the primary function of easy day to day usability is lost in the process. Modern Ferraris, Lambos etc are nightmare to drive no without getting stressed out with the appalling controls. Yes the quality should be better, but to live with I suspect a much better prospect than its rivals.

That's why they cost so much. Sam doesn't get it, and maybe a factory tour would help. The MC20 is far more hand made than ANY Ferrari or Lamborghini at the moment short of their one-off projects. Maserati should really try to capitalize more on that fact.
@lacorsanostra2 күн бұрын
Some quick thoughts: 1- The MC20 has always struck me (in a good way) as a 4C on steroids. 2- Here in the States, I’ve seen 2-3 low(ish) mileage MC20s hovering around the $150K mark. (Some may be “manufacturer buyback” examples, as different states have different laws regarding disclosure of such) but several more are at the $165K mark. If my arithmetic is right, that works out to +/- £118K to £130K…a very compelling proposition, in my estimation. 3- My DNA doesn’t include the sensitivity necessary to gauge how "emotive" a given engine is (or isn’t) so that’s not a consideration for me. 4a- The interior is “meh” on the execution. I believe some (many? most?) of the materials used could be more upmarket - especially given the retail price for an MC20 when new - but I can grade the design as being acceptable. 4b- I’m certain someone will comment/have commented that compared to its rivals where, for all the “premium” vibes of their interior touch points, it does seem that making changes to various settings requires some impressive tap-dancing with your fingertips across a labyrinthine set of menus and steps…not something I’d eagerly anticipate doing while moving at speed. 4c- That all said, I believe time will prove the interior to be net positive, especially in terms of longevity. I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end say, in 2035, of an estimate to repair a haptic SOMETHING from my friendly local Ferrari/Lambo/McLaren dealer. 5- I’m curious if the braking issue is a function of ceramic rotors, or does the brake design feature some other hidden sins.

I haven’t yet driven the MC20, but your sentiment about how you think this would be a good car at $100k is how I feel about every Maserati I’ve had seat time in lol. I’m happy to know I’m not the only one and this is probably why they DO depreciate so hard. I remember fucking around the the granturismo configurator back in middle school and wondering why it was a $250k car fully optioned, then I went and drove a newer, facelifted one at 21yo and thought to myself: this would be a really good car if it was in the price range of a fully optioned m4 or a low spec 991.2 GTS. That’s kinda where I feel the performance, build quality, and interior materials of the Granturismo lies, it’s honestly insane that you get that same sort of experience in a $200k+ base msrp supercar

I was really hoping for a serious Maserati supercar that could compete with the big boys (Ferrari F8s, McLaren 720s, Porsche GTs and Turbos, and Lambo Huricans) but it feels like they have just done what they always do, - make a car that looks beautiful but feels crap.

I think the closes competitor from McLaren is the GTS ...from Ferrari, as you said..the 488 GTB. I have the 488...and even that I know this MC20 is not as good as the 488...I still want to add it to my collection :-)

Ranting about the interior for a few minutes, and then you cut to that gorgeous yellow ass end at start-up... & I immediately stopped giving a damn about a single one of your complaints. Thanks for that!

What a beautiful car

I prefer a turbo v6 versus a v6 with all the battery assist. Much cheaper and easier to maintain. Not worried about sharing parts with Stellantis, look at Audi and Lamborghini. I would love to own an mc-20.

Maserati MC20 is a great looking, amazing car... Problem with it is that I would have to already own a Ferrari, a Porsche, a Mclaren or two, before it would appear in my list of interesting things to buy. But daymn its a great looking thing.

Here in the US they are an excellent deal used, but the worry I have is that the Maserati brand may not continue to be viable.

I never get why they cannot just spend 2000-3000 more on the interior and make it proper… Maserati just always looks like plastic Dacia level of interior 😅

Completely agree Sam. My 2019 Granturismo is 1000% more emotive and its “shared” bits are from Ferrari’s parts bin which, whilst not always the best, is at least unique to Ferrari. Shame really. Such a missed opportunity for Maserati to build a worthy rival to Ferrari and McLaren.

If you stuck an exhaust on it and somehow improved the brake feel, would be a great car.

It's design is absolutely stunning.....ageless beauty. Here are us plebs who can never afford cars like this watching Sam seemingly splitting hairs to find fault with cars like this and wondering.....has he changed? Who cares if some stuff is shared? Does it still work? FFS, stay humble Sam.....it's a Maserati man!

Some brands are meant to fail because of the public like to hate it , if a car has one flaw and 100 great features you find everybody just focuses on that flaw , no car is perfect and no car is 100% reliable, it's always a weighing argument many times just the exterior design or the sound can seal the deal , for sure Maserati is a victim of that , it has always been a great brand that is so special and for some it's a bargain sports car same as the McLaren which for me I would take any of them at least over a Porche anytime.

Does the engine sound a bit crap because of all the OPFs and filters? Those early Giulias sounded great… maybe not super car great but they had real character

Sam the answer is yes. Why Not so much production. Full Petrol head. No battery. Handly made one by one. Like yours First 4C, this car in 5/6 years price will grow Up

Interesting, I like the sound. Do you think you can fix the emotional feel with a different exhaust?

In my opinion Sam presents a perfect summary of this car. The price of this from factory is absolutely ridiculous. Just checked what a used R8 from 2017 costs in Germany atm and the MC20 is almost double the price at the used car market 😂😂

Why does the tire not cover the rim properly? Winter tires?

Great looking car, better than Ferrari, McLaren’s but lacks quality in sound and drama. Service costs on MC20’s ate horrendous.

At 13:30 you nailed it. i was thinking of trading my r8 v10 plus but the engine just ruins it for me. no emotion in the mc20

Re brakes, they are carbon ceramics and work best on track (as does the car itself). Not the best on road and/or damp.

Drove it three times, wanted to buy one - but just couldn't pull trigger. I sat this against McLaren GT, Artura, DBS, and Roma. The MC20 was possibly my pick from outside the car - but didn't compare well when driving, especially at lower speeds. That engine was just awful when pottering around.
