Can You Beat Pokemon Red Without Using The Letters A or E?

Pokemon Red is one of the all time great games to play with a modified ruleset. I love the idea of changing just one small detail and dramatically effecting how you interact and play something. So I racked my brain, and tried to come up with something really original, something you can't find anywhere else. Unfortunately my concept removed saving, healing and enjoying the game from the equation, so I think I made a pretty successful challenge run! So, now the only question is, do you need the letters A or E to complete Pokemon Red?

Yeah! Of all the RBY challenge runs I've seen (and I do follow JRose, love his stuff). This one was by far the most unique. despite being arbitrary it ended up being a legitimate interesting watch. and as usual Seer's commentary is absolute PEAK! He could literally make watching paint dry hilarious!

Cheat counter (aside from those already mentioned, like HMs): Most were mandatory. However, the options menu revealed some things that weren't. Battle style you changed from shift (legal) to sEt (illegal) Text speed was fAst (illegal) the entire game. mEdium would also be illegal. Slow was the only legal option. Clearly, this challenge needs to be redone with slow text speed. Other instances I caught: A button StArt Button All gym bAdgEs sAvEd at your house (mentioned at 25:30) pokE flutE yEs (mandatory dialog option, rocket game corner, blaine's gym at least)

Fun fact for the early game : even if not resisted, lick doesn't deal more damage to Brock's pokemons than pound. But what it has is a pretty high chance to induce the paralysis, forcing Brock to waste a turn healing it. So it's still somewhat necessary to get.

Isn't Jynx's special stat higher than her attack? Even if the attack's power is half of pound's, it should do more damage considering resistances and defenses

@@Albertinio1994 In a world that made more sens, you would be correct. Unfortunately, in Gen I to III, all Ghost-type damaging moves are physicals and thus take the attack stat into account ; i wish it wouldn't be so, but it is.

Holy shit, you're right, I didn't know ghost was phys in gen 1. Then I don't understand why, but lick still does more damage than pound. Try for yourself on the damage calculator of pokemon showdown for RBY with a lvl 16 jynx and a level 12 geodude.

An irony is that technically 'Missing No.' would qualify for this challenge, assuming you stick with just what the displayed name is. Though the moves would be problematic I bet.

By default, it has Water Gun, Sky Attack, and another Water Gun, so those are out. By TM/HM, it learns Cut, Fly, Psychic, Submission, and Toxic. Note that it has a Special stat of 6 (for comparison, Hitmonchan, a Pokemon held back by his notoriously poor Special, has 35) so Psychic would be hilariously weak. Most of its other stats are trash too (it has a defense of 0, health of 33 and speed of 29), but it does have a higher base attack than any other Pokemon (at 136), so it could have decent Flys and Submissions and Cuts (it's a Normal type so it basically has 75 base power) if it could live long enough to hit with them. That being said, Yellow Missingno is completely different, and also way worse, as it starts with Pay Day, Bind, and Water Gun and learns nothing by TM/HM, so you get to use a 15 power move with 70 accuracy for the whole game and then get stuck when you can't beat ghosts. Yellow Missingno also has different stats, with slightly more HP than Snorlax but garbage everything else, so it would be even more tedious than it sounds. There's also the fossil Missingno, but they're just weird clones of other Pokemon; they do copy the TM/HM learnset of the bottom Pokemon in your party though, so you could get a clone of something great and potentially teach it all sorts of things, but that would be way more complicated to analyze.

The fast-paced delivery of your vids is always fun. I have auditory processing issues so most of the time this sort of thing would be a nightmare to deal with, trying to follow along with someone talking so fast, but for some reason, the way you talk and deliver lines (it might be bc there's less variation in tone?) makes it so much easier to follow that I only lose where things are bc I stop actually paying attention (hello ADHD). Even then it's usually not hard to jump back in when I'm able to focus again. Also you somehow manage to make near-constant dickjokes actually funny instead of exhausting and kind of gross so hey hats off to you dude.

Assuming it's only species names and moves, get a Nidoking, give it Horn Drill, then at the start of every battle use an X accuracy and then you can sweep everything. The idea is that Horn Drill is guaranteed to knock out the other Pokemon, but it only has 30% accuracy. An X accuracy in this gen makes moves ignore accuracy checks, meaning that Horn Drill will hit every single time.

This challenge would be doable on a vanilla copy of Pokemon Platinum where you could start out with a Piplup with Pound, evolve it into Prinplup and get Whirlpool and Hydro Pump by level up as well as several moves by TM/HM, notably Surf. You wouldn't even have to solo run the game as there is a gift Porygon that you could evolve all the way to Porygon Z (assuming you can trade) and you can't use any of its level up moves but you can use Psychic by TM, and there's a Riolu gift egg as well which you couldn't evolve or use any of its Level up moves but by TM it gets Dig, Focus Punch and Toxic which is certainly a set. Unfortunately you can't use the tutor moves because that would involve collecting Shards so you're blocked off from putting Icy Wind on something or Swift on Porygon Edit: a correction, since Up-Grade includes both an 'a' and an 'e' your Porygon would remain basic, despite the Dubious Disk actually working.

I've just noticed that I'm the og challenge runner for pokemon blue and no one will convince me of anything else. I got pokemon blue as a 5 or 6 year old, problem being I bought it in german and was only fluent in portuguese and french, so I spent the entire game without catching anything thinking I had to beat the game to learn how to catch stuff. By the time I railed the elite four, my blastoise's back was so hunched from carrying my -50 IQ ass that it looped and made the damned thing walk upright like an absolute chad. It wasn't until pokemon started being a huge thing that a mate from school brought his cartridge to brag that he was lvl 40 with 30 pokemon in his dex that I learnt to catch the damn monsters. When I showed him my completed game he probably had a momentary drop of the balls prior to his actual balls dropping. I proceeded to play the entirety of the elite four section just so he could see the ending. Fun times.

Pinsir could have been a better choice but it falls flat when being so close to beating jynx Learns more moves than jynx later on in the Learns valuable moves like bide, bind, and submission Plus it Learns cut which does more damage than pound And finally it is the superior bug type as opposed to the icE type from jinx However pinsir's Achilles heel is that he only gets vicE grip as a starting move and other than cut Doesn't get any usable moves until bind
