Unfortunately, the account of Bahira is not authentic! Ibn Ishaq's Sira does not specify who he, as the author, learnt the account of Bahira from. The other Hadith collections which detail the incident contain unreliable transmitters. Furthermore, critical thinking would suggest the story is fabricated: the account of the cloud and shade of the tree as well as the prostration of the rocks and stones is suspect. How would the young Muhammad prior to his prophethood use the term "Bismillah" since this would have preceded the revelation of the Qur'an (which made the phrase common)? Furthermore, where would a poor monk have the means to stage sufficient food to provide for an entire caravan. Moreover, if Bahira had predicted the messengership of Muhammad to those present, why did Abu Talib not accept him (SAW) as a prophet later when revelation came to him at the age of 40?!

@Stephen Connolly The arabs before Muhammad (PBUH) already believed in Allah and use to take oaths by mentioning Allah. Muhammed (PBUH) already stated that he did not accept the idols. And how can you say this narration is weak? Not only is the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) present but hes uncle too! Show me your proof if what you say is true

but prophet isa a.s. also said ellai ellai (remember the translation of god on his cross INRI); plus in Egypt there are Christian villages where god is still addressed as Allah....

@@Stratford_Dawah - go and do some due diligence. The information I am citing is accurate and logical and out there (a simple Google search on the reliability of the report in question will throw up the appropriate information). The report relating the incident with Bahira is not reliable and illogical for the reasons stated. Another being that the names of other companions accompanying the Prophet are cited who were children at the time and thus would never have been in the caravan. Essentially, you are unfortunately admitting to your gullibility by putting any store in this fabricated narration. It is bunk!

@ZAYN MOUSSA - the term itself was not in common usage. The Makkans surely knew the word "Allah" but not many terms other than that prior to the revelation of the Qur'an. In fact, the amazing feat of the Qur'an is it being an Arabic text yet it confounded the Arabs with its language - using terms they had not heard in that way before. Take the often repeated phrase "Al-hamdullillah Rabillalamin" - all new phraseology as far as the Makkans were concerned with a meaning which they had never heard or considered before.
