Who was Bahira?

Brubaker answers a viewer question about "the Legend of Sergius Baḥīrā," a 2009 book by Barbara Roggema. He uses the occasion to give a wider reflection on the topic, to show a variety of biographies of Muhammad, and to discuss the biblical context or framework of some of the details that exist in the Bahira account, both in the Biography of Muhammad by Ibn Iṣḥaq / Ibn Hisham, and also in the later Syriac and Arabic recensions published by Roggema.

@@nobleprince1238 The deception of Allah is written by Christian Prince and he is like someone else said, an extremist. I would even call him a hate preacher. I haven’t followed him but I’ve seen some of his videos. He’s spreading hate and if he was a Muslim, he would be called a terrorist. Judging from his English accent I would say that I’m quite confident that he’s either Syrian or Lebanese Christian. There are lots of hate in the Middle East between different Christians, Muslims and sects, that’s why it’s such an unstable region with war and killing. The other person that you’re asking about, I don’t know him so I can’t comment on him.

I watched this extended video programme twice to follow the 'fascinating stuff' of complex historical writings/traditions of the Christian monk Bahira. Thanks very much Dr Brubaker for taking us on your amazing journey of discovery. Only recently I was reading the book of Daniel in the Revised New Jerusalem Bible, Study Edition (2019) with Henry Wansbrough notes. Your study comparison of young Muhammad and young David is truly fascinating. Equally Bahira's foretelling of what Muhammad would do much later in his life as the commander-in-chef, I think; was probably God telling himself. cf Jesus encounter in the temple elders when he was 12. The rest was history as laid out in Gullaume's Sira and Roggema's powerful Syriac and Arabic recensions.

There was no Mecca during Bahira's time or Muhammad's time. Historical account and present day archeology is not conclusive. Historical writings of other known and famous cities do not refer to Mecca as a booming trade or centre of civilization as claimed by tradition being the place of Adam Eve and where Abraham destroys idols and builds the Kabah. Building of the Kabah Is mysteriously missing in the Jewish writings which should be there . In which case Isacc ( Israel )should have continued as his centre of worship.. Mecca today has nothing to prove that it was the place where Adam or Eve or Abraham and his sons were . .A huge black hole in the standard narrative

I was just a casual listener to the local Ramadan radio station for a couple of years. This was not because I particularly interested in being converted but just learning more about another's beliefs. I had been rather impressed at how much detail about the life of their founder that they were able to access. Then the station broadcast this story. Right away all the alarm bells started ringing. If this story is true, then how can the origin story of Mohammed going into a cave, suddenly being surprised at hearing the voice of a messenger of a supernatural being and the needing to be convinced that he was a prophet of a god also be true. He should have been expecting it. Not to mention, why would the monk remain a Christian if he had had such an extraordinary revelation. It completely changed how I listened to what Muslims had to say to each other about their own religion.

It seems like both Christians and Muslims have been guilty of using the tale or accounts of Bahira to further each of their aims. But I can't be sure; I think this side of heaven it is hard to discern what the truth of the story is, but if there was a Christian Monk and Mohammed had contact with him, this to me would suggest where Mohammed got part of his revelations from. This is significant for Islam as I understand they all say Quran came DIRECTLY from Allah with NO, absolutely NO human influence. This account and many other matters regards the text of the Quran I believe totally disproves this belief-set by Muslims. What do you think?

You are totally right and this shows the historic importance of some companions of the prophet. Especially in the Ummayad dynasty, approximately starting 15 years after the death of the prophet, many hadith were burned and many others were forged. Another origin of hadith are from the family of the prophet, which were oppressed shortly after the death of the prophet himself. In those you dont find stories like he was scared from the angels. The majority of muslims believe in contradicting narrations. But for the people taking the hadiths of the prophets family and rejecting the hadiths from the ummayad dynasty (which are called shia) the story of Bahira matches perfectly with the behaviour of the prophet when he received revelation

If Bahira was a known Christian munk, living before the muslim tradition of the origin of the Koran was establishment, then this story would fit this scenario quite well, both confirming to Christians that they should believe in Muhammed, AND that Muhammeds revelations are in a biblical tradition and line, thus it should be received by the Christians

This is what i have been saying all along about m. I would take it a step further and say that he learned the Torah and the Holy Gospels by Christians and Jews since he was traveler who knew the desert. So who used to travel in those days?? It was the Jews and the Christians and along on those long trip Christians and jews prob read and spoke about scriptures all day long. And those trips could take weeks if not months. and muhammed just listened and absorbed everything and later on claimed he had an revelation. But if you read the quran carefully you will see it is precisely a text of somebody who have heard it and remembered little bits here and there. Thats why the quran is so weak on times, places, names and events. Never goes into detail always give you just the basics little story like a kid who heard a tale 2 years back and is now asked to tell about it. You should also do a video on Muhammad wandering away with his brother, the two angels appearing, pulling his heart out, cleaning it, and putting it back. His parents go and look for him. Reminded me of the Jesus story in Luke where he wanders away. Also Amina being told that she'll have a kid reminds me of the anunciation of Mary. And the story leading up to the birth of Muhammad's father with the well and the patriachish type figure who needed a sacrifice and wanted to sacrifice his son. (He ends up meeting with a sorceress who tells him to sacrifice camels and use divination and arrows to see how many to sacrifice). That story reminds me of the patriachs. Those would all be good videos.

I am not sure about this and wanted to ask would it be more logical geographically if narrative was actually referring to the actual Mt. Sinia you had alluded to I.e. The Legend of Sergius Bahira is very interesting. I do remember reading this years ago, and thinking there appeared a more Muslim account/s and there appeared a more Christian account. If so, this might point to the account about Sergius having some truth to it- unless the Arabic accounts are Christian Arab accounts. What's more unless one believes Mohammed was truly a prophet; one must reason where he got his biblical and other Quranic stories from especially as Mohammed was known to be illiterate either in the sense of not reading or writing or in the sense of being previously ignorant of the scriptures- fascinating subject!

The Arabic word that is often taken as meaning illiterate is ummī. However, that is not the only meaning the word can carry. I believe it could also mean "of the people," in the sense of being a common man. Personally, I find it a little unlikely that a man who was engaged in the caravan trade had no ability to read or write, but I suppose it is possible. However, it is also worth noting that not being able to read or write would be somewhat inconsequential related to the delivery of an oral/recited text. Finally, in at least one place I noted in the Biography, I note that it is said that Muhammad wrote a letter. One could assume that this is not proof positive that he could write, because (for example) it could have meant that he had someone write the letter. But it does say (at least in translation... I have not checked the Arabic) that he wrote it.

Monk Sergius (Sargis) B'Khira (a title not a family name meaning he who predicts) Most probably he was called that following what he had said in regards to Mohammed even though this story remains to be a legend. What we know about Sergius B'Khira is that he was banished from the church and he wanted to revenge and so came about the story with Mohammed. However, there are stories that that Sergius regretted what he had done and he wrote a letter admitting to his mistakes and asking for forgiveness.

Wraqa Ibn Nowfel died shortly after his only meeting with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He was Christian. But his statement was if he was young he would stand by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) when his own people will expell Prophet (PBUH). From the tradition of previous Prophets Wraqa knew that same prosecution will happen with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and showed his willingness to believe and help the Messenger. So no question over that Wraqa did believe that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was a true Messenger.

I have one question that has been hunting me for a couple of years. Please bare with me. According to western scholars of Quran manuscripts, the Uthman quran has never been found. Many have claimed that the Birmingham, Paris, Sanaa, Istanbul, Kairo Hussein, Uzbek Quran are the Uthmantic quran that the Muslim tradition claim existed and was sent to different places around the Muslim nation. I’ve followed this debate closely and no scholar of Quranic manuscripts (Puin, Déroche, Asma, Lemsyah) etc has said that the folios/Quran we have today are the uthmanic manuscript. If all these scholars can come to this conclusion that we don’t have the Uthamnic manuscript or some folios from it then they would be able to tell when they have found the uthmanic manuscript. They should know what to look for. What will they look for that confirms that they have found the uthmanic manuscript? Is it the hijazi rasm that is leaning to right? I’ve understood it can’t be in the Kufic style. According to scholars there were two different system of letters in the Arabic peninsula. One in the north (Arabia Petra) that was influenced by the Syriac language and one in south (Arabia deserta) that was influenced by the Ethiopian letters. Would the the uthmanic quran be written in the south or north style of writing? If the Quran was written in hijaz region then it should be in the south style of writing. Because the Syriac influenced style of writing was done in north(shem). If you and your colleagues are able to conclude that no one of the existing mus’haf and folios are the uthmanic quran than you must be able to know how the uthmanic quran should look like and what to look for. What would you look for? I hope you understood my questions. I’m just a layman and English is not my first language. Thank you for your time.

this is a good intro. Although it seems this has no bearing on the Prophecy of M. For multiple reasons: 1. Authenticity is yet to be established. And I don't mean the existence of Bahira, but his actual role and what is that really took place. 2. Bahira clearly would have rather avoided the incident to protect the Christians, why did he entertain any support. Unless he truely believed he was a prophet to be, which also entertains the reason why would that happen. 3. The narrative of M should have been more inline with Bahira's own beliefs. however, it seems to falsify and call out descrepencies in Bahira's beliefs. 4. The age they met is problematic in terms of a twelve year old (most likely) having to fully grasp all the details and the whole message. 5. In any case as mentioned it will be nice to have further studying of these questions and Bahira in general. Thanks

David Wood just released another video where fun is made of the writer of the Koran's tendency to make historical figures say things they didn't say, like he was using them as hand puppets for his own benefit.

Thank you Dr. B for the great analysis. I agree that these sound like stories thrown around for polemic purposes (by both sides). Shaykh Yasir Qadhi is also of the opinion that the story of Buhaira is likely false for a couple of reasons (that I recall): 1) Abu Talib never brings it up or talks about it after Muhammad (peace be upon him) declares prophethood, nor does our prophet mention it to any of his companions. 2) Others would have noticed the clouds shading our prophet and trees bending over to shade him, but there is no recounts of it.

These are rough numbers and no, I would not see any correspondence there. To combine the dates of Daniel & John's visions (ignoring Ezekiel's) and this third figure whose very historicity is in question, let alone that of his vision which looks in many ways to be a potential later rhetorical flourish (or at least to contain elements of such) to an earlier-developed tale, would be strange. The first print of الرحيق المختوم was in 1976. The Islamic books specifically the Quran, Sira and ahadeeth when translated, the words which in Arabic are violent or show hatred are all translated differently for non Arab readers for example the word Kafir which means infidel is translated as disbeliever. Hence, anyone who does not read Arabic will not know the real meaning of the words nor how they are used vis a vis Jews and Christians. The translators are in their majority Muslims so they have the obligation to present what they write in an acceptable manner even if they are dishonest.

I'm open on the matter and well aware that traditional sites are not always the actual sites. I did not pay attention to who produced the material that I saw a number of years ago, but in terms of physical evidence, the archeological remains (e.g. apparent altar and inscriptions, etc.) at the base of the mountain in N. Arabia were compelling to me. This is exactly what one would expect to find around the real Mt. Sinai (and I do not use quotation marks, because whether it is that one or another, I believe somewhere is the actual Mt. Sinai). It would be odd, in fact, unless looted or carried off to a museum, to not find such evidence around Mt. Sinai, because certainly the people would not have carried a heavy stone altar with them on their onward journey through the desert ... they would have left it behind. But as to alternate alleged sites of the mountain, I confess I have not similarly weighed the evidences in their favor. I remain open to evidence in everything.

Thank you for your answer. I suggest you take a new look at that video you watched some years ago. It isn’t done by scholars or any serious archeologists, at least not if it is the youtube-video I think it is. The petroglyphs they show in the video of different bovine creatures can be found allover the place in northern Saudi Arabia, and was quite common in the neolithic period. They are not made by israelites during exodus.

I'm reading ibn Ishaq's work. It paints a very different picture to the Muslim apologist narrative that Muhammad could barely have known the first thing about Judaism and Christianity. While this is obviously very flawed at face value given he was a statesman who based his legitimacy on his claim to be a continuation of the Abrahamic faith and spends years living among Jews, this work portrays Arabia as pretty well connected to Jews and Christians and Muhammad also. I've encountered many Muslim apologists who like to fantasise that the only times in his life he could have gained the foggiest was during his encounter with Bahira and with Waraqa.

Dr.Brubaker, Just want to point out to you couple of things here. Certain Muslim scholars totally rejected this tale of Bahira. Allama Shibli Nomani of old India and I think even Moulana Akram Nadwii of Cambridge too rejected this tradition as false or Fabricated in Muhammad's case. And another thing is that one of the sirah/biography book you've introduced here was by S.M Hasan al Banna - and you said the author was the founder of Muslim Brotherhood. But he is not. Actually, this S.M Hasan al Banna, who authored that book- 'The sirah of the final prophet' is a totally different person. He is still alive and of Bangladeshi origin. He is also the founder of Awakening publishing company. And there is another book you've introduced was - The Sealed Nectar or Ar-Raheeq Al Makhtoom, - the award winning book, which won the best biography of the prophet - in 1977 because of its extensive use of narrations/hadiths. The competition was conducted at the time by the Dominant Wahhabi/Salafi dominant judges. So you know what it means when they say "award winning"....the author a Wahhabi, the judges wahhabis too, the sources were all Wahhabi selected....

It is, firstly, the case that the prophet of the Saracens (i.e. the Arab invaders) is presented as still being alive, despite this text having been written at least two years after Muhammad supposedly died. Secondly, the prophet of the Arabs seems to be proclaiming some version of Christianity, note especially the references that he foreshadowed the Christ who was to come and that he has the keys of paradise. So whoever this prophet was, his actions and beliefs clearly do not correspond to the traditional account of who Muhammad was. The way in which he is presented also contradicts a crucial aspect of the traditional account of Muhammad's biography, namely that he died in 632.

One can imagine a meeting between the Prophet Muhammad (reportedly aged 12) and a Christian monk living in Bostra (Syria), on a trading mission with his uncle Abu Talib. One would imagine that the monk must have been no younger than 30. Probably a good bit older. This account related in the book asks us to believe that the monk was able to secretly travel to Mecca (or Medina), a distance of at least a thousand miles across a harsh desert landscape, between the ages of 58 and 81 years old, likely older, without anyone else knowing. In real time. The Prophet's revelations were often almost instant (not always). See Surah Abasa (reportedly delivered in full form minutes after his interaction with the blind Bedouin man). Delivered in a form only a native speaker of the Quraishite Arabic dialect could have possibly crafted. And delivered to an illiterate man whose life was lived, almost to a fault, in full public view. The Qur'an itself refers to such unfounded accusations in its text. As a Christian apologetic, this one is really desperate! I'm a little embarrassed actually for anyone who buys this laughable account. As to the existence of the meeting with Bahira in the Prophet's childhood, it is neither needed nor in any way central to the Prophet's mission and message.
