This and the Dwarf ii are game changers for getting people interested in Astrophotography. The price points are very impressive as are the results that a raw beginner can get with them straight out of the box. The ardent and experienced astro imagers may see these as no more than toys, but this is not the market they are aimed at. Also, they bring the entry point into a fascinating hobby so much closer for so many more people. In image quality perspective can they compete with the more expensive and complicated set ups that experienced imagers will use? No absolutely not, but if the bug bites, people who use these will want more and will progress to more complicated rigs. My order is going in this week 🙂

@@mark33545 i do plan On taking a hike and taking both my Seestar and my dwarf. Very convenient because they are both battery powered and rechargeable with a battery pack. You can use them for scenery photography too during the day!

Found your video as I was having an issue where the scope's wifi wasn't on the internet. I think it's all corrected now. The package arrived yesterday (Dec. 27) and of course the weather in Maine is cloudy and rainy so I can't really play around with it much. Thanks for the tutorial, it'll help to have at least seen the stuff once before I'm out in some dark spot in a few days.

Nice review by Scott this morning, I speculate the reason the data you got per 1hr is a result of a)dithering b)frame rejection…. So under perfect conditions 45 min of data per hour is probably going to be normal…. On harder targets I suppose 30 minutes per hr may happen frequently. Some may think that’s a bad thing… but the goal is to get the most noise free image you can so the extra time it takes is a good thing…. I use dither mode on my other robot for that reason. The 2nd thing I noted is the eaa folks might be a little disappointed that the image is pretty dim without post work…. This is something zwo can improve over time… straight out of camera algorythm should improve… they may just add an enhance button at the end of your session just so you can see it more clearly in app. I was impressed by the moon and sun and it was very thoughtful of them to make these capture in avi so that you can do stacking easily in post…. I still wish that had added a manual focus option for lunar… as good as the auto focus is… my experience is focus on the moon can always be improved… but it looked nice in the demo so we will see

Scott, its nothing to do with transfer rate between devices why you only get say 44 mins of integration after 60 mins of image time. It will be smart stacking and removing poor frames. Ten sec subs on alt-az mounts will produce a percentage of failures. Its doing exactly what its supposed to do. Great video by the way.

@@ScottCastrophotography it’s a great feature as you wont need to sift through hundreds of fits files removing poor frames. Its done for you. My Vespera the other night was imaging Bubble Nebula over 2.5 hours and I got 75 mins integration time. In fact it didn’t collect any frames for 30 mins at one stage yet it carried on. The sky kept clouding over and that was the reason it skipped so many frames. This is great as all the work is done for you with smart stacking. The images you are getting on this test are very impressive. I’m looking forward to receiving mine.

A variable polarizing filter cuts Glare and can get an image. Seen a guy get Juipter and can see the belts just using a polarized 3 filter on Dwarf 2

I just connected mine for the first time. Connecting had several more steps to it than what you show on this video. I turned it off and am charging it now because the battery was only about 50% out of the box. Am I going to have to reconnect every time I turn it back on?

Awesome video man, something to look forward to when I get my S50? A question though, on the app on the nearby feature, it says you can find a place to shoot. I tried to search for a place (where I normally would go) like to plan and stuff, and it only gives me locations in China (I'm in California) is that still happening as I cannot find US based locations even as the Map correctly shows mine.

I take pictures of the moon, Jupiter and Saturn with my telescope and phone mount. They look pretty cool for what it is. I’m really interested in this thing though! I just don’t understand how it can take such stunning photos of deep space objects yet Jupiter looks like a blob. With my $100 setup I can see the colors and storms in Jupiter’s atmosphere, let alone multiple of its moons.

All about Focal Length. Telescopes are either geared for deep space or for planetary not both. What makes it good at one hurts it for the other. It's the same reason why most phones have multiple cameras these days. The new iPhones have 3, one for distance, one for normal, and one for close. Think about it that way. Planets are really close, bright, and small where galaxies are very far away, dim, and huge.

It already has a built in high quality Duo Band filter. That's actually what the LP filter is which is why it's recommended not to use on Galaxies

As a complete beginner to astrophotography the Seestar looks like a good purchase but as soon as you got to the post production on pc part that was overwhelming. How would i ever learn what all the post production features are and when to apply or use them? you must have made a hundred or more adjustments to the images you took how many months or years would it take a beginner to learn all this ?

Yes it's super easy for beginners. Literally tap and go and press the shoot button. Everything is automatic, nothing complicated

ScottCastrophotography with ZWO Seestar Scott, I like your explanation of the Seestar app. It has a working Astro map that can skew to an object? What about manual entering the coordinates? Also, the max gb is 64gb non-expandable . Is this correct? Can it work with zenith objects like the ring nebula? Some say it can't because of the mount in Alt/Az. Would this be the same for Dwarf ll Alt/Az mode? I have the Dwarf. Why won't anyone try to use this Seestar in EQ mode to help field rotation. Also, Is the exposure time fixed to 10 seconds or can you shorten the exposure times, let's say 5 seconds. Can this be done here? I must be missing the full capability of this unit. ZWO is a name that can be trusted. Do you think they will respond to other people's suggestions? I think a 50mm to 2" or 48mm filter adapter would work great here. It's just a little bit smaller, but I believe it can work. And 48mm is a standard size that can be stepped up to let's say 58mm, using a stepping ring. I can use 58mm DSLR IR filters on the Dwarf! And where can I find the raw files on my PC? Like what drive and folder should I look for? I really wish they included the individual light frames as well as the dark frames. That would be super awesome!!! Especially for external stacking and for post. Can any of my requests be made by ZWO or is it TBD? I don't know anyone from ZWO as I do with Dwarf Lab..... Hi Scott, I have watched the whole video and I enjoyed it very much until the post processing section. This is because I’m a complete novice when it comes to astrophotography apart from what I have watched on KZbin over a couple of years. In fact I don’t even own a telescope but the subject fascinates me to the point that I really do want to get one and something like the seestar really appeals to me. Now be honest with me, am I going to be happy with the images straight from the Seestar or am I going to have to post process? Could you show some in processed images on your PC to illustrate the quality. I feel that the post processing bit might be a lot over my head. I am computer literate but I have never understood histograms and colour balance and all that sort of thing. Any honest info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No generally you wouldn't need to post process, but it can bring it extra detail in your image if you do. I Will Be making another video going deeper into post processing with seestar soon

IMHO, you should be able to. If you can't install the 'app' directly to your laptop, you can always install 'emulators' that will emulate an android or iphone and run the app inside of that shell....so to speak. I was thinking about using a simple tablet myself.

I dont think it has that feature. But there are apps that can mirror your smartphone to the smart TV, so you can basically observe the universe from your couch.

Note that the seestar has over 4 x the light gathering power compared to the Dwarf II. I think a 50mm lens versus only a 24mm, if I read the specs right. That will mean that the Seestar should do better on dimmer objects. Personally, I’d wait for the Seestar.

I am an absolute fan of the Dwarf II, but it's not able to pull out details of smaller deep sky objects, however, it's nice that you can polar align it for no field rotation, and you can set how many exposures you want to take. Id get both, but Seestar is mainly for the small deep sky objects imo

It rotates on 2 the base rotates and the lens does 2. It's not polar aligned to there is field rotation but it tracks quite well nevertheless

this does not seem like ths is the first time out of the box. I just received mine and when the power is pressed its in Chinese not english. Further the quick guide shows that you are to press the resset button as well. so I'm not sure if you are really running this the first time "out of the box"... pardon my frustration but I cant seem to get it started the first time and was hoping that your video would provide that info. @@DawgcityClev the max exposure time is 10sec for the camera, at such short exposures having a cooled sensor really won't help all that much as most of the noise issue is going to be shot noise. I have now seen a couple different reviews/videos and am impressed with what this little thing can do.

Why does everyone I see screw it on like that? There could be two issues? 1 dropping it or 2 increasing the risk of cross threading. For me would rather either tip to Seestar unside down and screw in the tripod or tilt it on its side and screw in the tripod. Screwing it on like that think its a risky way

It lets us level it before putting the Seestar on. Using the app to level it honestly is more tricky in my opinion. The tripod has a built in level on the top

The images have those circular artifacts which is presumably being genererated through the sensor or lens but is annoying to say the least.

The telescope is not revolving around the chosen subject, so I am still a little perplexed. It seems odd to ignore it. In any event, the video is very useful, so thanks.

@@g-r-a-e-m-e- you are correct, the telescope is not rotating...BUT...the Earth and sky are. This is known as filed rotation, as the sky rotates it creates a this pattern. It is inherent in an alt-az mount. You can see this happening if you watch Orion over a whole night. When Orion rises, he is lying on the side, as the night progresses the constellation becomes vertical and then continues rotating until he is lying down again when the constellation sets. An equatorial mount will not have this because on EQ mount is aligned to the pole and thus the whole mount is moving in the opposite direction as the Earth which cancels out the field rotation.
