Fun fact: Azathoth doesn't dream reality. Not once in any of Lovecrafts stories does it ever say that Azathoth dreams reality. There is even a story of a time traveler who journeys to future earth where Azathoth is awake and one shots earth the old fashioned way. All the while the gods of mythology are running away in terror.

Not entirely correct. While it’s not in any of Lovecraft’s stories, his poem, Fungi from Yuggoth, says the laws of each universe are made as a by-product of Azathoth’s sleep and the music keeping him asleep. To quote: “Things he had dreamed but could not understand, While near him shapeless bat-things flopped and fluttered In idiot vortices that ray-streams fanned. They danced insanely to the high, thin whining Of a cracked flute clutched in a monstrous paw, Whence flow the aimless waves whose chance combining Gives each frail cosmos its eternal law.”

I like to think that Lovecraft invented Azathoth as a counter to all forms of organised religion, not just Christianity but Islam, Buddhism, ancient Greek/Roman, Norse, Cimmerian or any other, where those religions place an entity of higher power as the creator, and that the universe is based on their intelligent design. I like to think he created Azathoth to take a swing at these faiths, suggesting that there is no intelligent design, that the universe is indifferent, thoughtless and chaotic, and that we are simply trying to place reason into something we do not wish to accept as beyond our scope of understanding. It was brave for anyone back then to even suggest the universe was anything but intellectual design.

If I remember correctly, the biggest "secret" of the mythos is that everything is simply the dream of azathoth, and one of the reasons he's considered the blind idiot god is because he is totally unaware of anything in this dream. It also means that he is the most powerful of the gods as everything including concepts are just fragments of it's imagination. Narlethotep is one of the most dangerous gods because it seems that it's goal is to wake Azathoth. The other gods are all aware that the only reason they exist is because Azathoth continues to sleep, and that if he wakes they too will cease to be.

You must point out that this is just ONE version, but there are many others. Lovecraft himself wrote about a story of the destruction of a higher being than Azathoth, a story wich finally drove Abdul Alhazred insane. There's also a story were Azathoth got punished and locked into the center of the cosmos, sewered from his soul Nyarlathothep and kept leashed through the music. And then there's the story in wich the gods of order created Azathoth and his kin as slaves to work for them, but the demons broke free and flet to the cosmos we are in.

That's not actually that much of a contrast with many of the oldest polytheistic and animistic religions. A lot of the very oldest myths of humanity DO consider the gods to be amoral beings, placated and appeased with worship rather than asked for favors. This changed as we distanced ourselves from life in the wild, as we built civilization and altered the environment around us to meet our needs. We made our lives less cruel and uncaring, and we changed our gods to reflect that.

Azathoth, more or less, is simply Typhon, Tiamat, or Apep of Ancient Greek, Sumerian and Egyptian myth. In other words the embodiment of Comic Chaos. In some ways this Cosmic Chaos is irrational (idiotic) and while it is the Shadow of what would could be called the “Absolute” it is only ONE SIDE of this Absolute Principle, the other side being of course the opposite of ignorance and chaos, wisdom and harmony. This is obvious when we realize humanity (even though they are just speck in the universe) only have wisdom, ethics and meaning because there is in some sense a larger source from which it is produced and to which it returns. Perhaps all this is a dream of some being or even class of beings and perhaps they are imperfect in their wisdom (idiots) but aren’t we all? That’s the whole point of reality, to grow in wisdom of what life is and who we are.

Meanwhile Nyarlathotep actively enjoys causing chaos, death and destruction for no other reason other than amusement, something that none of the other Great Old Ones, or Outer Gods in the Lovecraftian Mythos actually do. In other words while the rest are indifferent to humanity, Nyarlathotep enjoys destruction, chaos and death, making him ironically the most human of the Lovecraftian deities and the most malicious.
