You can test if 32X support is possible at all by hooking up the 32x to power and it's video output to a tv and also hook the MegaSG hdmi to another tv. If you get the game to run with some of the visuals and sound on one screen and the rest on the other, then the only issue is mixing the two video/audio signals and still end up with HDMI, not the 32X composite. You should give it a try in a video so we can all see the results!

You could probably get a cheap HDMI to composite converter, and use some RCA jack couplers to connect it to a standard Genesis model 2 A/V cable, and then plug that in to the 32X. You're feeding the video the opposite way of what the cable was intended to do, but should work.

Fun fact about the 32x, the genesis game passthrough still works even if the 32x doesn't have any cables connect. Don't even need an ac adapter

You're right, supporting the 32X peripheral would result in RGB output at best. However, implementing the 32X hardware in FPGA (2 Hitachi SH-2, VDP, etc.) would be a great undertaking, and beyond the capacity of the Mega SG's hardware.

It's possible. Kevtris has said he can create an PS1 FPGA. 32X would be easier. The issue would be why, cause there's only 30+ games for it.

With the Nvidia Shield you can play Genesis Saturn Dreamcast PlayStation N64 and many more emulators and even watch movies. I never said anything about it accepting Genesis cartridges. I brought it up because it's around the same price point with way more options. Anyways all it was was an example I'm not telling anyone to go buy the Nvidia Shield or buy anything for that matter I'm just giving my opinion. I do like the mega SG but it's not cheap and ultimately the king is still the original consoles the Genesis and Mega Drive.

8 Bit Flashback If you’re someone with a collection of Genesis/Megadrive cartridges and want to play them with the best possible picture quality, then the Mega SG is cheap compared to HD Scalers like the Framemeister XRGB-Mini or a professional quality CRT Screen. That’s the target market Analogue are primarily going after. For those people, the Shield is not a viable substitute, because it involves ignoring your cartridge collection and getting into the somewhat dubious world of ROM files and software emulation that sacrifices some level of accuracy. Analogue’s devices fill a definite gap in the market, and are priced right in the middle of that gap, otherwise surely they would have gone bust by now?

Analogue is an amazing company and produce quality products. Well worth there price tags. What's $200 to vidoe game collectors... You can spend that on one game alone for your collection. Just to sit on a shelf and look at. Analogue is not perfect. But what is... Kevtris knows his stuff. Software updates will come to correct flaws. Sweet channel by the way!

On Everdrive, have you tried tried a game with battery saves, then hit the reset button (or reset hotkey)? On mine, it gets stuck at OS Init after you play a game with saves (Shining Force), then hit rest. Once it's stuck at OS Init screen, Everdrive loses the data and saves are lost.

Most clone consoles I have tried virtual racer did work on, but there was 1 that it didn't but it was rom dependant as it was SD card slot only and certain rom files of it didn't work and others did. I didn't find a working rom for the system. Perhaps a no intro rom would work but it was a odd clone console as it depended on .bin's only so you had to find the right rom dump and most roms wouldn't work on it and the only mass achieve of games I seen using this exact format was taken down. Unfortunately I didn't back up these downloaded and I have not been able to find any reupload of it. I did a compatibility test of this Portable Genesis Player that I couldn't get virtual racing working on, and it ended up being the most popular page on my website as wikipedia people kept editing the compatibility list as most people failed to understand it only worked with a exact file type in a exact format. The only remaining files for it I have left I reconed japanese versions of games, Pal regions, and pretty much all sports games. Even after that I only have about 1/4th of those left as the SD card for the machine didn't accept anything higher than 512mb.

It should work as long as the Mega SG is truly backwards compatible with the SMS just as the Genesis model 1 and 2 were (containing the Z80 processor chip like the SMS). The power base convertor was just a passthrough.

Great review! So it seems that it runs even the "snap on technology" from Sonic and Knuckles. The only thing that makes me worried is really really obscure games for the Genesis/Mega Drive. I'm talking like I have a few obscure games like DJ Boy and Target Earth.

Hmm... if the Analogue SG uses FPGA chips to emulate the Genesis (hardware wise), then adding the 32x is simply a matter of making sure the fpga is large enough to incorporate the 32x hardware.

But how about the pause button on SMS games?? The 32X can be supported if the FPGA inside the mega sg is powerful enough but i don’t know. A real 32X could work on the mega sg by 1,by modding it with HDMI in & output, Or 2 , by using a hdmi to RGB adaptor and a RGB to hdmi adaptor, but that will be clunky to be used that way and there might by synch & noise issues ,but who ever knows. Also there will be a hdmi to video adaptor sothat you can play lightgun games on a crt tv, in the future.

The mega sg is wasted potential. It was obviously rushed and because of this the consumer suffers. Hopefully the megadrive mini will blow this thing out of the water.

Analogue has been great in the past about firmware updates for their consoles making fixes to the system and adding support for any games that have issues. I wouldn't pan the whole system for something that can be addressed. I haven't seen Nintendo or Sony putting out firmware updates for their mini systems. (The hackers have been doing it for them)

Given that mega drive minis have been released for the last twenty years with twice as many games before the mini fad became mainstream, and that this device can play mega cd, master system and mega drive carts off the bat - with game gear and other sega devices planned - it's tempting for hardware users. Meh if your gonna use hardware, why not use the original stuff, SEGA Genesis are everywhere, had this device included a CD rom to play SEGA CD games, and added the ability to play 32X games without the need of the peripheral than it would have been something to talk about, the only good thing I see this device offers is HDMI output, but other than that there's really nothing here, anyone hard up to play Genesis in HD would have already modded there original hardware to do that..in my opinion its a rather overpriced redundant piece of needless hardware.

It's not needless as this is a good solution to playing Sega Genesis/Mega Drive games in HD lag free with the best graphics and audio quality. Original Genesis consoles are good and all but to have the same result as this one you need to pay premium just to mod it to get RGB result which isn't always perfect. Not to mention original Genesis consoles are not region free so games from Japanese and PAL won't not work on it unless converter were bought for which could add to the cost whereas the Mega Sg is region free and had support from all regions. The Mega Sg also came with a free SMS adapter for playing SMS games so you don't even need to buy an extra Power Base Converter for this. Sound quality on the Genesis were also not as good compare to the Mega Sg, the model 1 had good sound audio but could only output in mono with stereo only possible through the headphone jack whereas the Model 2 had mediocre audio but support stereo which sounded even worst. The Mega Sg offer the best of both offering stereo in both the headphone and the audio output.
