Sega Lord X

Before Sega had a console of its own on the North American market, it supported systems like the Atari 2600. Let's take a look at the games they were involved with.
I'm now on Patreon! Help support the channel.

Check out my Sega Lord X merchandise page!
segalordx.threadless.com/
If you would like to support the channel directly:
www.paypal.me/segalordx
Head over to Facebook to hear me ramble about various things:
/ segalordx
Episode Notes:
1. Captured using the Stella emulator.
2. I still own my fathers 2600 in its original box. It still has the original RF output, however
3. Most of these games are very affordable if you collect for the 2600.
4. The Starpath Supercharger kinda reminds me of the 32X. It has a small library as well.
5. Games Covered:
Frogger
Carnival
Zaxxon
Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom
Congo Bongo
Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator
Sub Scan
TAC/SCAN
Thunderground
Pengo
Spy Hunter
Tapper
Up'n Down
Frogger II ThreeDeep!
6. Music Selections:
Opening Monologue - Sega Ages 2500 Space Harrier
Frogger - Columns Clotho
Carnival- Shinobi Arcade Stage 2
Zaxxon- Master System Zaxxon 3D
Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom- After Burner
Congo Bongo- Altered Beast Round 1
Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator- Outrun Passing Breeze
Sub Scan- Super Hang On Winning Run
TAC/SCAN- Power Drift Like the Wind
Thunderground- AB Cop Stage 1
Pengo- Bonanza Bros. Duty
Spy Hunter- ESWAT Stage 1
Tapper- Golden Axe Turtle Village
Up'n Down- Space Harrier 3D Battlefield
Frogger II ThreeDeep!- Super Monaco GP Concentration
Closing Monologue- Thunderblade Type II
7. I chose to use Sega arcade music as background tracks because most of these games either had no music at all during gameplay, or the sound effects clashed terribly with the voice over.

As someone born in 1972, I got my first Atari when I was about 7 or 8 years old and loved every minute of it, while the graphics and sound weren't the best the system was just plain fun in my opinion. I still to this day hook up and play my original Atari 2600 that still works which is something modern consoles seem to struggle with nowadays but every time I do my son laughs at me and even though he's 18 now he still laughs every time I play that 2600 but I'm still having fun. Maybe it's the Nostalgia talking as it takes me back to my younger self playing video games with my father and my sister but isn't that what gaming is about anyway? A game can be graphically and technically superior but if it isn't fun then why even play in the first place?

I feel the same way Robert. A whole new world was opened up when I turned on Space Invaders for the VCS and went from being a passive TV viewer to taking an active part in the game. We’re very fortunate to have had that experience.

Videogames will always be thing even if evolves and I just remember that started out on the Nes before I gotten N64. I believed I have an RF adapter that had the forks and I would have to really unscrewed the back of the TV..Now days can still use some of the classic console and am still playing Sega Genesis to this day.

Being a fellow old man in video game terms, I enjoy delving into the 2600 library from time to time to both play old favorites or to discover other games that hold up today on their own merits. Everyone is always surprised at just how legitimately great Warlords is as a party game, and the 2600 port of Track & Field with the arcade controller it came with is surprisingly great. Solar Fox is also a great game for people who enjoy playing for score, which is a pre-requisite for enjoying most games of that era... Seriously, though, everyone should get out paddles and play some 4 player Warlords.

You've really gotta check out the Atari 8-bit home computer fan-made port of Space Harrier. It's absolutely amazing considering the hardware is from the '70s! Unlike other Atari home computer games, it uses composite artifact colors and features music with digitized voice. Unfortunately, that means you're going to need to play it on a RF/composite display to see it with proper colors. No one on KZbin has done it justice! I used an Atari Ultimate Cart with an 800XL and an original launch version of the 800. Of course, it should run on an Atari XEGS game console just as well.

I too was not impressed with Atari when I first saw it. My step father was a gamer from that time and could actually reach the kill screen in Pac Man. He introduced me to the 2600 when I was...3. I got the Nes in 1985 at 4 and while I liked it growing up it never moved me to being a diehard gamer. I mastered Super Mario Brothers by the time I was 6. My heart always belonged to the arcades. I had an NES and Master System growing up and though they were a good way to pass the day....that is until one faithful Autumn day in 1989. My best friend at the time came from a very dysfunctional home and his parents were very strange at times. They didn't really have any interest in their kids and usually bought their love so to speak. He was the very first person I knew to get a Sega Genesis and hoy f!#%^$#@"%$# did that thing make you feel like the arcade experience came home. I had never witnessed graphics like that in my life and from that day foward, I dedicated myself to gaming not as a way to pass the time but to be the best. I convinced my father to pick me up that night so I could show him the Genesis...I got one that Christmas with Ghouls n' Ghosts and Space Harrier 2. My step fathers reaction to the Genesis was also very interesting as well. I hooked it up to the TV in the living room and I remember the jokes. Son, they were saying the best graphics andying on covers of games since the Coleco Vision...we ran two Atari games first just so he could prove a point. Both Pitfall and Adventure...I remember saying- "Are you done." When he saw the Genesis running Space Harrier 2, Altered Beast, and then Ghouls n' Ghosts his reaction was identical to mine...in front of my mother. Hey, what Hell are you teaching my son!" He never picked up the Atari again but we wound up with two Genesis's...Genessisi's...Genesi's..what ever. Oh...and the Atari VCS audio is the most God awful, atrocious, most grating thing I have ever heard in my life. I remember thinking...."does it have to assult my ears as well, it's already stealing my eyesight."

Maybe if you started playing it in 1977, things would have been different. I know what you're saying though. I acquired my 2600 when the tech was getting way outdated. By the NES came around in 1985, the 2600 was obsolete.
@Sinn0100
@Sinn0100 5 жыл бұрын
@@Tictac-s2e You are likely correct. Further, I wanted to say that I meant no disrespect nor offence. I realized after typing that I seemed a bit flippant and that was not my intention. Sega Lord's videos generally flood me with so many memories it's like a deluge that I have to put pen to paper (so to speak). If I had been a normal kid, I likely would not have received the Genesis when I did nor any of the other machines when I did. You see, I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at a very young age, I have had to go through numerous neurological surgeries. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to do normal things like most kids and gaming became my only outlet for years. Thankfully, you would never know by looking at me that I have these issues. I am even more grateful that my mind and drive for success have not been hampered by my many surgeries in any way. In all likelihood, Iwould have played football or baseball like my brothers. My sister for example, was a cheerleader...I would have refused that one. ;) The general consensus was that they were not spending anything on me for other activities. They knew I could not simply go out side and toss the pigskin around (I still did and do) as taking a hit...could kill me. Of course that has never stopped me and my parents knew that opting to keep me occupied. It actually got kind of ridiculous as my parents are divorced and competed with each other through me. My mother actually beat my father to the punch and got me a Genesis for Christmas. He retaliated by getting me an SNES in 1991 and my mother followed through with the Sega CD. It actually got beyond ridiculous...when your child (minor) tells you to stop you know it's gone way passed to far. My dad coming home with a 3DO in early 1994...what are you doing man?

@@Sinn0100 I understand growing up not playing alot outside having stayed sick most of my childhood.I was born premature and had many operations in my childhood not counting always going back and force to the doctors offices being sick. I never owned Atari but did get the Intellivision around that time. Even back then I was fully aware the graphics looked nothing like the arcades so whenever possible I played whatever arcade I could get my hands on!When the Sega Genesis released it was like a game changer for the arcade players. Sega finished but never released an Atari 2600 game called Ixion. The ROM is available online. Apparently Sega were going to put out an arcade title called Ixion and they had the thought to put out simultaneous home ports at the same time. Apparently the arcade game tanked (probably due to the market crash of 1984) and everything was shelved. The ROMs for the Atari 2600 version as well as the Atari Home Computer were eventually recovered and released online, I don't know if the VIC-20 port of the game ever was. Pretty ambitious to not only make an arcade game but even before finding out if it was going to be popular making three home ports, all before even doing any market testing.

I don't look at the system fondly the same way some people my age do. A year later, we had the Colecovision, and that system blew the 2600 away.

I wish Sega would bring back their older 1980s arcade hits. They seem to have forgotten they existed before Sonic.

Arcade ports on the 2600 were more like practice runs for when you do play the coin ops. The real arcade experience came from buying the ColecoVision or Atari 5200...but they were extremely expensive.

Sega's version of Frogger on the Atari 2600 is my all-time favorite version of Frogger. I think it is more fun than even the arcade version.

Some dev houses just pushed the old 2600 too far. There are several excellent arcade ports (Berzerk and Solar Fox are 2 examples) but certain types of game, in particular those that relied on 3D looks, just couldn't really be done on the hardware. The best 2600 games are original IPs - Yars Revenge, Warlords and Beamrider to name just a few - as they are built to take advantage of the hardware. I'm sure Sega could have developed a handful of original games for the console - but I suppose that was more of a gamble with arcade game ports more likely to sell in big numbers even if they weren't very good.

Would be great to get a flicker filter for some of these, on a CRT these looks less flickery. On an LCD this is really jarring to look at.

I may not have played any of the games in this video, but the Atari 2600 was my primary console for entirely too long. I picked one up in 1988 in a thrift store, and it was my primary console (I also had access to a 286 PC) until I sold it for... a Sega Saturn. I was poor, ok. I think that I managed to obtain a Genesis a year or so prior to the Saturn’s launch, but the Saturn was the first time I owned a console anywhere close to its release. I didn’t get to play anything on the Nintendo side until they were many years out of date.

How and when you got a console really does matter. It's why we all have different opinions on them. Even though my opinion is negative, I'd never downplay anothers love for the 2600.

I wonder how old Sega arcade games would be like on Atari 7800, using the POKEY soundchip and a 16/32KB cartridge

And then there was Turbo. OK, it wasn't finished or released back in the day, but AtariAge sells a finished upgraded version with the original prototype on the same cartridge. It's still a tough game though.

Good video as usual. So why did the 2600 and Sega use the same controller connector? Did they make a deal or something?

the ports of tapper and spy hunter may be linked to then recent events at sega. Following the death of Charles Bluddern (CEO of gulf and western), gulf and western immediately began downsising and selling it's non esential acquisitions. midway, the creators of the original arcade versions of both games, ended up buying the arcade side of the company, while the console devision was acquired by it's internal staff with financial backing from csk, a japanese supplier of productivity software scene as the Japanese Microsoft. sega most likely acquired the home rights as part of the deal. Midway would return the favor by being the western distributer for bull fight, upn down and bank pannic (all but the last one being system1 games).

I know its an old video but with Carnival you need to hit the colored windmill till its destroyed then clear the board quickly until nothing left Then you go to the next round I noticed you were just hitting the objects without taking down the windmill So you're only on the first stage

first off I enjoyed Zaxxon for the 2600. I found it easier to play. Second, these are YOUR opinions but some people played games for the graphics while others played for the game play. For me, I didnt care how the game looked cuz if I couldnt play it, the prettiness didnt mean jack to me. You said that you chuckled when your friend said that he no longer had to go to the arcade because he had a library of 2600 games. I can attest to that as well because I didnt always have money to play and B. I no longer had to worry about it because of my library of 2600 games. No more getting chased from the game room by neighborhood gangs no more losing money no more risk of getting jacked. I had a Coleco Gemini then Atari 5200 then NES. Thanks for the video though.

Same as nintendo, they too did put their games on the atari 2600 before do it all on their own with their console, but once sega had gave up with the dreamcast, they couldn’t do it on their own anymore so once again, they put their games on other systems and so there we are at full circle,in short, the history will repeat itself.

Hey - I'm pretty sure Konami developed Frogger for Sega/Gremlin, not Gremlin for Konami. It was even built originally on Konami hardware for the Japanese market (though the US version did have Gremlin manufacture the hardware domestically, both regions use the Konami arcade pinout - I've owned both PCBs). Gremlin DID develop the unrelated Frogs arcade game, though.
