Another episode of Sega arcade games that have never had an accurate or faithful home port. I chose a few 3rd party arcade games that were done on Sega hardware for this one.

Episode Notes:
1. Model 2 games captured via Nebula Model 2.
All other games via MAME.
2. I do not generally consider ports to much weaker hardware as grounds for saying a game received a home version. A port should capture the overall look and feel of the game its based on. Like say Sega Rally on the Saturn.
3. Games covered here:
Pilot Kids
Over Rev
F1 Exhaust Note
Air Rescue
Dark Edge
Holosseum
Slip Stream
GP Rider
Aurail
Laser Ghost
4. Opening monologue music is Credits from Super GT.
Ending monologue music is Heat Waves from Super Monaco GP.

Well if VF3 is anything to go by, it wouldn’t be totally with ease, but good ports were definitely a possibility. Not sure why we haven’t got an AM2 arcade pack that includes a lot of these though for today’s consoles.

Alot of these games would be great on 3DS i honestly would buy a conesole version of the System 32 i reckon SEGA could have a Huge comback if they started selling Console versions of their arcade Hardware and even sell Cart Compilations or an online store it would be SEGA's triumphant Return into the console market they have so many timeless games and its good because arcade hardware was for a very long time bespoke tough stuff to make happen but we are in a great era with FPGA emulation super scaler tech is Art to me its so amazing id love to see some indie dev make a modern super scaler game in high definition with amazing sprite work at 60fps++ it would be amazing.

Just to add on Slipstream: it was also released in Mexico and was to be distributed throughout Central America and Spanish speaking South America as well. There is an Hispanic version of the game, along with the Brazilian one, and there were a lot of left over PCBs at Capcom Mexico when they shut their doors down, 16-ish years ago.

As a South American guy - I'm Brazilian, I had the chance to see and play Slipstream back in the day. I remember being blown away by the overall quality of the game. Two games that I didn't see in both lists of locked away arcade treasures were A.B. Cop and Rad Mobile, but I'm not entirely sure if they ever had home ports, though I'm pretty sure there weren't.
@ZX3000GT1
@ZX3000GT1 3 жыл бұрын
Rad Mobile has one, in Sega Saturn, called Gale Racer. I'm more confused with the fact that F1 Exhaust Note was there instead of F1 Super Lap, which is the same game except slightly better visual, 8 player multiplayer, OT (Boost) feature, and actual F1 license.

Dude, I love your channel so much. There's arcade games I BARELY remember from my childhood - games I"ve been trying to figure out the names of so I could try and emulate them, so I could play them again, and I always find them on here. I've had the intro of Laser Ghost stuck in my head for YEARS - there was a cabinet of it in the officer's club in my dad's navy base. All I can remember is the freaky intro of the goblins snatching people up, and I've been searching for what the hell that game was forever.

I live in Brazil, and i went in a arcade center on a shopping mall, just to see what was there. The place was empty, few people go to the arcade to play something nowdays. Still, i found many old arcade cabinets working there, many of which were Sega games! There was Daytone USA (link system), Indy 500, Sega Ski (Model 2), Let's Go Island (2006 sega arcade, looks super fun). The other cabinets were old Namco and Midway games, like Cruis n' USA, and Time Crisis 3.

Arcade hardware was much more powerful than even home hardware even a decade earlier. The Sega System 24 and System 32 had much more Raw horsepower than the Saturn (although Saturn had better graphics and colors) It wasn't until the Dreamcast that it became closer to the arcade (the Naomi had more RAM and Sound Processors than the DC)

O Lord of all Sega, live forever!!! It might sound weird to say, but part of why I watch your channel is because I don't care for most arcade games by volume, so I want to see the other side of life. You're such an informative and analytical superfan that it gets me inside of a lot of games that I've never seen and wouldn't want to play, especially for money. I didn't grow up around an arcade with most of these games, just the key games like Afterburner, Time Traveler, and the mind-blowing Thunder Blade experience. The rest are very repetitive and derivative and they milk the shooter and racing genres really hard, but you get into all the little nuances. That's exactly what an arcade is for, to just pop a quarter into some high-tech eye candy that you couldn't get at home and walk away. It's part tech demo, like a taste of the future. Oh, also I'm no good at the racing and whatnot lol. From the 60s to the 90s, Sega was really pushing it. So I know there's a lot there nonetheless, but I never would have heard of most of these games without your channel. And it's cool to hear from someone who is *so* far into something, and knows what they're talking about. Your videos are well written and edited. I do a lot of video game history at Wikipedia, and I helped a fair amount on this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periscope_(arcade_game) which I think you would like a lot. I wish there was a video and pictorial diagram overview of this, because it's really hard to envision or relate to. Somebody could do videos just about Sega's electromechanical past.

What's really sad, is all these games had some amazing soundtracks, and save for a hand full, like Daytona 2 and SCUD Race, you can't find most of them. Like Air Rescue. That soundtrack was jammin. A small arcade in my town had that machine in the back, and I used to pop tokens in it just to hear that rocking music. Also, if Sega had put some of those early 90s "3D scaling" games on the Sega CD, instead of crappy FMV games, I bet the Sega CD would have been amazing.

I still haven't played Holosseum, but I did get to play Time Traveler, and that illusion was awesome. You're exactly right about getting to play the real thing on an arcade cabinet being the experience of choice when available. I have quite a few cabinets and pcbs, but a lot of Sega's stuff is sure expensive to track down. Yeah, stuff like Hang On or Outrun isn't too bad, but sweet lord do a lot of those system 32 games get up there in price. I'd love to get more super scaler games to play in my cabinets, but for now the closest I can do is play my GI Joe board, which is really great, but man...would I ever enjoy a nice system 32 setup.

Slipstream and Overrev look great. I have a feeling Slipstream was only ported to South America to cash in on Japan's love of Brazil's F1 legend Ayrton Senna. Why it didn't come to Japan remains a mystery, but that's my guess... Japan in the 80s and 90s was crazy about F1 and Senna was a big reason why I believe.

Thank you LordX. Great review of some of our worlds greates arcade videogames. I should fill you in on a certain detail that made Laser Ghost such a great game. If you google its cabinet you will see the guns are like a little box, or a screen. This is because there was a hologram of a laser beam inside. And when you fired it flashed accordingly, it produced a really awesome effect for the game which have, to my knowledge, not been replicated. Also, even though SEGA designed their own boards and hardware, regarding the Model2 they had plenty of help from Martin Marietta who I understand provided the 3D-chips and texturing for SEGA's boards. The later Model3 was a developement of the Model2. SEGA never manufactured their own 3D CPUs, only IO-chips and simpler ASICs.

Nice look at these games. I always was curious about Slipstream since learning of its existence. It does look very good in action. I like the way the camera follows the car around turns. It's smooth and not jerky or jarring. The draw distance is pretty good too. OverRev looks pretty good as well. It also looks smooth in its motion. I've played racing games where the camera seems more locked to the car than the track and it can get me dizzy in a hurry. These games look more my style. I played GP Rider and Aurail a few months ago to try them out. GP Rider is quite tough, but it handles so well. Its graphics remind me of some Saturn games. Aurail is pretty neat. The first-person parts were a bit odd at first as it wasn't initially clear what was going on. I thought the game's difficulty spiked really fast though, which hurt it a bit.

You know, I always wonder if Sega's scaler hardware could possibly run a Wolfenstein 3d engine purely using sprite scaling. Maybe a little extra chip to do the warping to get the walls right.

I'm surprised you didn't bring up Ghostbusters when reviewing "Laser Ghost", since that was actually the very first thing that came to my mind after checking out the game, especially since many of the ghostly creatures in that game looked like they belonged to the world of the Ghostbusters!

Great stuff, as always! Try F1 Super Lap over Exhaust Note. It is a (even) better looking and playing version of of Exhaust Note. Imho it's one of the best arcade F1 games.

I remember Holosesseum back in 92 when I was a kid, it was pretty cool and looked awesome. Problem was it cost 4 quarters back in 92 for a single game and compared to Street Fighter II it sucked. Maybe if they dropped the price to 25 cents and had special moves it maybe would have done well. I always saw the machine empty as in no line or players.

That game, Dark Edge, I've never seen a fighting game like that before. Pretty damn impressive looking.

The clouds on the walls in Pilot Kids look nearly identical to the clouds that appear in Toy Story. I wouldn't be surprised if they used that movie as an influence.

I was watching this and you talked about Laser Ghost and VR. You know, I think VR and a VR gun would solve all the light gun issues (to a point) for the older games using light gun tech. I know Nintendo has been using some sort of sensor for some of their wii games and such but VR... damn! Might be onto something there.
