It’s amazing what they were able to do with a Motorola 68k based machine. The same cpu used in Amiga and the first Crapple Macintosh. Must’ve had some serious coprocessor power.
@kathleendelcourt81365 жыл бұрын
The X68000 was such a beast, even if it lacked real scaling dedicated hardware its beefy CPU could simply power through it in software. It's really hard to get your hands on a fully working system nowadays but fortunately emulation is pretty accurate and you can get a taste of its great library of games.
@SegaLordX5 жыл бұрын
That beast CPU and the special hardware that allowed sprite manipulation really was something for a machine released in 1987. It had a boat load of RAM for the era too. An entire Megabyte in 1987 in the base units.
@kathleendelcourt81365 жыл бұрын
The closest in Europe and America was the Amiga 2000 also released in 1987. But it had a weaker CPU (stock), weaker sprite manipulation capabilities and a lower color palette. The sample based sound chip (Paula) was arguably superior though. And more importantly, games were made for the A500 base specifications.

I discovered the X68000 only about a decade ago. It rocked my world to realize that arcade-perfect ports of circa 1990 games like Strider were theoretically available on a home platform. Until I made this discovery, I had considered the Amiga 500 to be the epitome of a platform years ahead of its time. Today, I regard the two different platforms to be about equal in capabilities, but with the X68000 enjoying the direct support of Japanese commercial gaming giants -- super critical in that era of gaming, compared to today -- which resulted in a notable disparity in the number of quality titles available for the platforms. Of course, knowing now that the X68000 was a $4000+ investment, compared to the Amiga 500's ~$700 pricetag, _really_ adds some important perspective.

Schwarz had a display with one of those, and a weird early VR system I've never been able to figure out what exactly it was (lawnmower man/ starfox level graphics). I'd never seen one in the wild (and to this day never have again), but apparently they'd order and import one. I still want to know what the heck VR I used back then, too. FAO Schwarz was a mecca of toy insanity. Incidentally, they were also the first American retailer for the NES back in '85. It very well could have been a different system, that was 30 years ago and I was quite young, but the gameplay images and the case design look awfully familiar. More research had me thinking it *might* have been an NEC PC-FX, but there's a few problems there as well (timing doesn't seem right relative to release, and it's another Japan exclusive). I might never get to the bottom of exactly *what* those weird and wonderful toys were that day I went to "the toy store from 'Big", but I'll always be thankful my mom was as big a kid back then as I still am today. Sorry for the long, oft-edited response, I'm simply trying to frame the memory in the proper context as a fleeting, three decade old experience.@@SegaLordX

The Sharp was, as far as I know, a pretty much Japanese gaming computer, so it was not advertised at all in North America. It was and is a sweet piece of tech, but the price was super steep back in the day and still expensive and quite limited...I should have attempted to purchase a unit about 10 years ago, when I first discovered its existance. Also, I am surprised that the unit received as much development support for games since it was so very expensive. A fantastic video and piece of hardware. When RetroArch released their core for the X68000, I was like a kid at a candy store.

Emulation has gotten fairly good for the X68000. I definitely recommend everyone at least tries it.

I had some issues with several games but the ones that worked had no issues. I had much better luck than with 32 bit era emulation that’s for certain.

A funky looking computer, a pity it didn't come to the west, despite the price.

Dare I say the sprite scaling is smoother on the X68000 than the arcade?

Ive found out about this hardware from GameSack. Strange and unknown one, but quite powerful for its time. Another one is FM Tower. Are there any Sega games on it?
@SegaLordX5 жыл бұрын
You mean the FM Towns? Oh yeah, plenty of Sega releases on that one.
@felidiusz5 жыл бұрын
@@SegaLordX Yes, this one. I messed up its name, sorry. Well, its a material for another episode then, maybe? :)

Pra ter noção do poder de uma SEGA X ou uma simples System 16,nem o PC Power da epoca dava conta de portar 100% o arcade. SEGA ARCADES POWEEEEEER

This is the only system that can make Neo Geo AES owners look financially thrifty for choosing the AES as their arcade machine at home. (Yes, I am aware the Sharp 68K was meant to be a professional workstation, not a consumer game playing device).
@SegaLordX5 жыл бұрын
The average cost of a complete game on the X68000 is pretty high. Even games that are fairly common tend to be above $50. Anything rare is $100 or more. Anything rare and awesome tends to be $100s more. It's definitely not for the thrifty.
@Tempora1585 жыл бұрын
@@SegaLordX You didn't read my comment correctly. I said the Neo Geo AES is cheap relative to the Sharp X68K when the NeoGeo AES has always been thought of as the super expensive gaming option.
