Sega Genesis games on Nintendo Switch Online Plus, are they worth the upgrade?

Late in 2021 Nintendo shocked, and kind angered, the world by announcing Nintendo Switch Online Plus. For an additional $50 users would get access to more games and functionality for the service. The focus since then has been on the N64 and the promise of coming Gameboy Advance games. However, lost in the conversation has been much talk about the fact that you can now play well over 20 Sega Genesis games through the service. But are these games really any good? Well, we’re experts, and so we’re going to weigh in on this issue.

I, too, am neurotic and compulsive, and I loved those types of RPGs back in the day. I just love playing these games with a BlueTooth SNES controller. The expansion pack is worth it to me for the, you know, expansion packs for Animal Crossing and Mario Kart, but the Genesis games are a sweet addition.

Nice reviews. Ever since I’ve gotten back into gaming I read about how awesome Echo and Dynamite Headey are and I’ve tried getting into both multiple times. I typically don’t make it more than 10 minutes in Echo and there’s just something that doesn’t click for me with Headey. I can understand why others like them but they’re not for me and it was nice to hear someone who feels the way I do.

Thank you very much for watching dude! 😎 I actually get in trouble, a lot, for disliking Ecco the Dolphin and Dynamite Heady (at least in past videos) but Im glad other people feel the same. I think technically both are very impressive, but neither have ever given me much enjoyment. I think I should probably do a whole video about popular Sega Genesis games I don’t like.

Good to see that the emulation of these games is done well, but I would like to see the Saturn and Dreamcast have its titles be given some love. The feature set and quality of online gameplay is also below its contemporaries on Xbox and PlayStation. In terms of offering more value for Switch Online subscribers, it gets the job done, though.

I have a Sega Mega Drive Mini, I've modded the hell out of it and have the entire library of games that were released in all the regions and they play beautifully on that. I have no desire to pay for the expansion pack, let alone switch online unless more N64 games are added to it's weak existing library and emulation imrpoves. Whilst M2 have done a great job with Sega games on the 3DS, the MD mini and other platforms etc I am sure they did a great job on the switch online service. For me it's not worthwhile but I think it is worth it for those casual gamers that don't have the Mini or collections and have a switch and use that for their retro gaming fix. My main gripe with it is they have loaded the same games that the Mini Ristar wasn't on the mini but is on Mega Drive collection for other systems but it's a good add. They need Rocket Knight Adventures and some of the other Konami games for it to be worthwhile along with many other stuff that would rquire licensing for it to be worth it in an official capacity. Musha is available on the Asian varient of the Sega MD mini (which I own) just wanted to point that out. Appaloosa Interactive also did the Lost World for Mega Drive, a late release for the system in 97', but I think it's something you should check out as it's got a lot of depth for what it is. Also Alien Soldier wasn't exclusively release in Japan, we got it in Europe. However if it makes you feel better you guys got Midnight Resistance and Rolling Thunder 3 which we never got. Great Video love the Sega Content, still praying for that Master System Mini!

The Nintendo switch online is definitely more for the casual market. I can’t help but think it’s been a dud. Most switch gamers wouldn’t be interested in such a thing, and hardcore retro enthusiasts have all these other option. I personally enjoy it a lot. Yes! Musha was on the mega drive mini, which was so cool I considered getting a second unit for it, but decided against it. I really wish it was on the Genesis mini too. Great comment and thanks for watching dude! I’m still holding out hope that Sega announces something this year 😎

Really good video. I’ve been debating getting a Switch for a couple of years now but I keep deciding against. First was the Switch Lite and I thought that would do it but you can’t connect to your tv? No thank you. Then the online package was appealing but too many of the NES and SNES games were repeats from other consoles. Then the expanded package but holy cow have you seen how much they want for those controllers?!? 50 bucks for a Genesis controller? Same for an N64 and that’s if you can even find one available and 60 bones for a pair of NES controllers? One of the main reasons I like the mini consoles is to play with an original controller so playing those games with a Switch controller doesn’t work for me and spending an extra 200 bucks on controllers is a kick to the groin. I really hope Nintendo makes more mini consoles because I don’t think the Switch is for me.

I have a love hate relationship with the Switch, and honestly the only reason I ever got the thing is that I have four kids and 3 out of 4 enjoy those Nintendo games. I truly enjoyed Breath of the Wild, that was a great experience, and I acknowledge the exceptional game library, but I could do without all of it at any moment for any reason. Logistically, the Switch is kind of a nightmare. Every time my kids want to play some 4 player game like Smash Brothers or Mario Kart then we have to spend 15 minutes trying to pair all of those lose joy cons….and then the little bastards hardly work because of drift or some other issue and the fact that my kids treat game controllers the way they treat hot wheels or legos….if you can imagine. Then there’s wrestling all the accounts. Who’s using who’s account? What games are downloaded on to what switch? Does this require a physical copy? Is everything charged? It’s such a mess. Starting a game, even a simple game, we have to go through menu after menu, option after option, and then we wait or there’s a major system update that has to occur….it all just sucks. We’ve overcomplicated games and we’ve ruined the experience. Half of our time is just figuring out how to configure everything that’s being shared by all these people. Mini consoles are a great alternative. So is something like the Evercade, in some perfect world where it had better games. But I hate collecting physical media at the same time. I think what I’d like is a very simple console, without joycons or gimmicks, that allowed you access something like X-Box live or NSO plus and didn’t have separate physical media. That would be great.

@@creativecatproductions I agree and a lot of what you say is why I like the mini consoles so much. I basically keep them all on one shelf with a Pandora arcade stashed under a chair in the back so very little space taken up and everything is the literal plug and play. No extra purchases or uploads. Just turn it on and start your game. So I still hope for one if not all of the N64, GBA, Master System or Saturn mini consoles.

@@creativecatproductions I have mostly given up on Sega but still keep my fingers crossed. They put out another Astro City console so maybe after? I’m actually putting more of my hopes that Nintendo comes through. I saw a KZbinr reported they maintain interest in the mini console market so maybe after another push for Switch online they’ll offer us something new next year. Or maybe this is all just wishful thinking 🤔

A little late in saying this, but there's an extension in Chrome and Firefox that let's you see the like/dislike ratio again called "Return KZbin Dislike". You can also use it in Opera since they've made it to where you can use Chrome extensions.

JonTron definitely isn’t for everybody, he breaks a lot of hearts, but he’s got his good points too. Sometimes you gotta push the externals aside and look deep into the heart of the man. There I think we’ll find a mirror reflecting ourselves at our core. We’re all just the same, we just avoid blame and grasp at praise according to different means provided by different circumstances. Wow that's a really hot take on Dynamite Heddy. I thought I was just being a dumb millennial when I tried it and was highly disappointed. One of my favorite parts of retro games is that they typically get right to the gameplay, which this game doesn't. Similarly, people love Mischief Makers on N64 and I can't stand it. There's my own spicy takes, sorry to any Treasure fans I offend.
