Sega Genesis Hack - Fantasia - Improvement

This Fantasia hack for the Sega Genesis tries to make the game more playable.
Improvements by tryphon:
Turnover, jump preparation and reception animations are removed, and Mickey keeps his momentum. It makes the game much more enjoyable
swimming physics is lighter : when not using button C, you don’t sink anymore (you must press “down” for that)
Hitbox have been refined a little : they stay too big when you attack (making attack easy), but are shrunk when you’re being attacked (making defense easier). It’s far from perfect though, since the hitbox system of the game is quite primitive
2 cheat codes have been implemented:
A+B+C+Start on the title screen - invulnerability.
A+B+C+Right when paused - go to the next scene in the current stage.
A+B+C+Up when paused - go to the first scene of the next stage.

Staring magic: 7 to 30
Rebalanced magic cost:
Little spell: 1 to 0
Big spell: 3 to 1
Rebalanced damage:
Little spell: 1 to 1
Big spell: 3 to 2
Bounce attack : 1 to 4
Rebalanced magic refill:
Simple flying spell book: 1 to 8
Secret flying spell book: 3 to 8

For a music-themed game it sure could use some work on the soundfont. I think that would already improve the vibe a lot

The easiest solution is to shoehorn in Mode 1 support. Although Fantasia uses a custom audio driver and the problem for me personally is - I only tinkered with Gems driver for Mode 1 support (Toy Story and Donald in Maui Mallard), not with the custom one like in Fantasia.

Fantasia deserved better with its Sega Genesis outing, I'm glad to see that there's a hack attempting to remedy the frustrating gameplay. Now if we could just do something about the less-than-stellar sound design, primarily get that horrid GEMS soundtrack replaced (possibly even give it Sega/Mega CD and/or MD+ capabilities)...

I see a lot of comments referring to GEMS. But Fantasia used another driver: the Sega Music Development System, from the Canadian studio Artech. It was in a way the predecessor of GEMS and was also used for Art Alive!, M-1 Abrams Battle Tank, Mario Lemieux Hockey, Spider-Man (vs The Kingpin) and ToeJam & Earl. Artech developed only 2 games for the console: Dark Castle, adaptation of the game released for the Apple Mac, and Crystal's Pony Tale, which ironically had GEMS as sound driver.

I loved this movie as a kid. I remember watching it back at my Grandma's house. The VHS tape came in a Black Clamshell Case. As for the game, I've never played the game, before. I would definitely play this improvement hack as my first time playing Fantasia.

Sadly, music is one of things are really difficult to fix. It requires someone with music skills to completely rewrite music

The gameplay improvements are spectacular, but the music (and especially the SFX) remain ear-piercing and really takes the experience down. Maybe you can partner-up with one of the many excellent composers in the homebrew scene? Pyron might know someone who'd be willing to give it a shot.

@JokerTheHedgehogX oh, I got that. It might also be possible to use a driver fix, or even to recreate the music entirely. This hack is already wonderful on its own, though. I fully agree with that. This fix could be pitched to the Brazilian homebrew community to be used as a base for such a music recreation, and maybe even color enhancements. 😍
