When it comes to the artifacts at the bottom I think this is just the way the Mega Drive / Genesis can be programmed to do cool video tricks. On a CRT they'd normally be hidden by the overscan. Back in the day of programming 8-bit computers I'd often use areas of video memory to store non-video data, which would look like screen corruption.

I believe this is correct. I've even seen this in very accurate emulators as well.
