SEGA Genesis Megadrive Controller Teardown and Clean. If your controller buttons are unresponsive and you need to press them hard to make them work, all you need to do it open up the controller and give the contacts a good clean.

Never thought of using armor all to protect them! Also, great tip about going easy on the carbon contacts since cleanings add up over time. I have a very cheap (literally a couple dollars) AA battery electric toothbrush from eBay that has never failed to quickly get every speck of grime in the controllers I've come across.

Yep just gotta take it easy on some of the carbon contacts. It's really not a huge deal, but it can ruin them if you're too rough.

Thanks for the video. I just received a new Retro-Bit/Sega Genesis 6-button controller with defective C and Start buttons and after a couple of cleanings everything works perfectly.

Huh, sounds like the same defect as I had. Did the cleaning and in my case, it didn't work. Currently I'm selling these as I'm obtaining genuine 6-button controllers.

Model 1 is three button. While model 2 is actually called six button controller. 3 button controller ( primary & standard ) 6 button controller ( fighting games )

7:08 That's gotta be one of the wackiest designs Sega came up with for their D-pads. I'm glad in the Americas they just stuck with the regular and trusty "floating" one

iRETRO you can get conductive paint and apply it to the pads. People do this with the wonderswan

Nice video! Very rewarding stripping down old controllers and cleaning them up. I don't normally put anything on my controllers.. But I'll try what you've recommended. I use either furniture polish or WD-40 on the actual consoles Check out my 6 button Microswitched controller video which will be up in the morning :-)

I use WD40 as well. Wipe it on sparingly, set for a few mins, then wipe it off. Yes it smells a bit but after a day or so it goes away. Looks great but can be a bit of a dust magnet. I've since switched to pledge furniture polish and that works too, but it's kinda sticky to wipe on and needs more work to polish it up, especially in small grooves. On a side note, do you know where I can get d-pad replacement rubber contacts from for the 3 button controller? I got one that someone had butchered to fit and it's basically useless.
