If I remember correctly, when you died in this game, this eerie music just kept playing as your next turn began. The music didn’t restart when put back at the beginning of the level… it was just a daunting reminder that you’re not starting over, but more simply, your Hell is just continuing for a lot longer than you’d hoped…

People always cite the 'Drowning' music from Sonic as being incredibly stressful, but for my money it's got nothing on Undercaves from this soundtrack. It's objectively awesome, but it also takes me right back to those tunnels, running out of air, desperately searching for a place to breathe... And Ice Zone, too, I found those ice levels to be genuine nightmare fuel, being trapped under ice is honestly a concept that freaks me out.

Late to the party but that's not 100% true. It's Ed Annunziata's baby, who was a Sega employee at the time, and it's published by Sega. Novotrade did the development, yes. It's what they (used to?) call a "second party" game, where Sega contracted out Novotrade to develop it. It's not incorrect to say it's a Sega-made game in that regard.

I bet Nintendo saved a boatload of cash by cheaping out on the flimsy cardboard boxes 95% of our games came in.. I always envied the Genesis cases across the aisle from the SNES boxes, in the rental store I frequented. It's so hilarious to compare prices of boxed SNES games and Genesis games. SNES games, it's like HOLY SHIT IT'S COMPLETE W/ THE BOX AND IT'S IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE - $500 .. Genesis games, it's like Huh? Oh sure yeah it's still got a box in perfect shape w/ all the trimmings. $30.

As a 10 year old kid, I remember getting through The Lagoon and thinking "this game's a little weird, and the music is a little eerie..." Then i got to Medusa Bay and the concept of being in the deep ocean, Ecco's screams when he got hit, and the creepy ass music... I realized I was in way over my head. In college I got back into older games and eventually beat it... but remember even playing the game in college, alone in my room at night, was still creepy as hell. Considering what we've been through... it's a love hate relationship... but I always bring it up when talking about my favorite games, so Love > Hate.

Jamie Williamson It came later, at a higher resolution, with a different soundtrack, but was otherwise the same game. That's what goes nowadays as an HD remaster. The music gets most of the credit for making this game so terrifying. In second place is the sense of running out of breath. The third is the completely hostile environment and the sound you make when injured. The fourth is the discovery that the story is essentially that we're crops in a food chain on a much larger scale than we ever imagined.

I miss the 90s. I miss the experimental, ground-breaking games. I miss games that were totally new and not seen before. Could something like Ecco even be made today? The pros are making tried-and-trusted games they know will sell; the indies are re-making the games of their childhood. Where are the new ideas?
@desktorp
@desktorp 5 жыл бұрын
older games were products of limitations, when artists, musicians and programmers struggled to cram their talents in to overflowing chips. Today, everyone with half an idea is free to fill an entire hard drive with their junk. No cartridges or discs to force restraint or weed out the born losers. Video games weakened us and now we are too soft and outgunned to possibly rein in this industry that is drunk on its own koolaid.

@hexyko4850 4 жыл бұрын
@Slevin I agree with you completely. Limbo is "safe". It's nothing that hasn't been done before. Back then, people took risks when they created their art. People still do that but it's harder to innovate when pretty much everything has been invented and you can just slap the label "experimental" on something if it doesn't make any sense to you. Back then, artists (game developers included), took more risks. They wanted to do what they wanted even if nobody would be interested in the end product... even if the work became a financial failure. See: The Last Express. I'm not even that old, I'm 21, I'm speaking like I'm ancient, hehe. I definitely think that indie developers now are focused on gimmicks rather than actually being groundbreaking. So, they make a really weird game as a joke, it turns viral for a while, and then people forget about it.

Kolibri on the Sega 32X was made by the ppl who did Ecco. It was the last of the chip tune generation. Amazing atmosphere. This soundtrack is absolutely superb, a master piece! I actually listen to this a lot when I'm just chilling out or falling asleep it has a nice ambience to it and I just like the comforting nostalgia. The music and the game while so beautiful has such an eerie sad feel to it and some times even danger. Such a well-written innovative composition. I'll need to find out more about who wrote it and the story behind it because it's a work of art. If it weren't for the fact that's it's in MIDI or just a soundtrack for a computer game it would be like Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells or something (although I think that thin MDI sound only adds to atmosphere and creepiness). Thanks so much for uploading this and any other Sega Mega Drive soundtracks you've uploaded (if you do I'm subscribing I love the nostalgia!) :-)
@ethanwoo5376
@ethanwoo5376 4 жыл бұрын
I know you probably dont care but... Midi is just a digital interface used to seqence and play notes and other data values (no sound). Usually to and from synthesizers themselves, but the synth chip in the megadrive/genesis is the YM2612 a multitimbral yamaha FM (frequency modulation) synth chip which evolved from the yamaha DX series synthesizers. The closest you will get is the dx100 or newer reface dx. That hiss or digital noise you are hearing is the 'cheap' DAC (digital analog converter), although, it gives it a nice retro quality. The notes aren't even sequenced/recorded by midi in the first place, the CPU directly uses some of its DSP (digital sound processing(or)) to control the YM2612. There ya go.

If you haven't already, check out Kolibri ost. Made by the same developer. It's a 32X game so it combines actual sound samples into the Genesis FM. Adding nature to retro electronic. Another game only novotrade could make. Edit: I'm aware Genesis can do sampling too, but not to the degree and quality 32X can. Kolibri might be the best showcase for the system sound wise. I'm glad it wasn't on CD, it's the last of the sound chip generation.

Even though I only got to play this on Nintendo Switch very recently, it already felt like I've played this game decades ago. The overall feel of the game is so nostalgic, and brought me back to early 2000s, when my siblings and I stayed up late at night playing console games. So one night, just to feel the nostalgia, I spent a couple of hours playing this alone without any guide, and just wandered around.

Oddly moody music for a game about Dolphins but it makes sense when you realize what the plot is and what inspired the game in the first place. Ecco is just really bizarre.

Still can remember the countless hours I spent playing this game. It's a testament to the story, the music gameplay etc, that a game this difficult had me devote so many hours to finish it in my youth despite the anxiety and frustration it could induce. Most games like this would cause me to simply quit but with Ecco quitting was never even a consideration.

this is such a good soundtrack. And such an original storyline. A dolphin has to go back in time to fight off an alien invasion who go from planet to planet sucking up all life from the oceans. Ends up on the mothership and takes out the alien queen. And the Aliens look like Xenomorphs. Friggin cool!

I swear this game gives you another case of depression and intense heart break of sadness for anyone who was doing a slow recover from depression. I listened to this soundtrack and I feel heavy weight of shock, sadness, heart break, and creepy feeling from one song to another. Just amazing and terrifying at the same time for a music from game with limited hardware back then

It's really interesting how different "The Stomach" feels. It's almost like it came from a different game. And it's understandable, as it was composed at a different time and possibly by a different team, for the Japanese version of the game, as The Stomach was an extra level added to that version for if you died to the Vortex Queen.
