I was born in '92 so I've only experienced this game recently and I must say, it really holds up. I think the 16-bit generation in general has aged extremely well, as evidenced by all of the indie games trying to recapture that era.

one of the best games of the past! first played this game back in 1991. the memories of some of the music, the adrenaline excitement, the gameplay and the title itself still lasted to this day in 2022. was so conceitedly proud to self-claim back in 1991 & 1992 that i was the best Herzog Zwei player among my circle of high schoolers. this was the first game that i've memorized all the maps, the predictability of the computer AI's starting moves. also the first game that triggered me to, i) visualize + pre-plan the first several actions that i wanted to execute before the matches began; ii) to formulate strategy/ies in what specific ways i wanted to win; and, iii) figuring out ways to be more and more efficient and effective.

Me and my buddy used to hang a sheet off the top of the tv, right down the middle and sit on opposite sides so we couldn't peek at what the other was doing. Granted the radar in the menu just sorta showed everything but we had a gentleman's agreement to only glance at it to get the broad strokes of what was going down. Good times. Also; the soundtrack slaps hard even today. Sure the SNES had better sound in almost every technical sense but the crunchy-ass FM synth in the Genesis was amazing when used by developers that really understood it, ie Technosoft.

I'm kinda horrible at this game (At least against the AI, I haven't played it multiplayer yet), but this is some awesome music. It's without a doubt the best soundtrack that Tomomi Otani and Naosuke Arai composed together. Epsecially Otani, I feel like this was his compositional peak. A massive improvement over Thunder Force II if you ask me. It's honestly amazing how much magic Technosoft worked out of the Genesis sound chips so early into the console's life span. It's awesome stuff.

Besides the perfection of soundtrack in general, there is something special in it: why both of final victory themes, and especially the blue victory one sound so extremely sad, even depressing?... Gladly, they are followed by credits theme, which is perfect for maintaining that "Yeah, I've done it, I won!" feeling. But those 2... Without the following credits theme, ending the game you feel like "what have I done?... I've defeated my opponent, but why, what for, does he even deserve to be beaten?..." You feel like you've done something wrong. Like you are the evil for what you've done, not your opponent. Why did the creators make them like this? Was this feeling intended or they never wanted a player to feel like that. So many questions...
