After comparing this with your regular YM2612 upload, I can honestly say I prefer the MegaAmp + YM3438 for percussion, but the YM2612 for bass. Overall, I still like the MegaAmp +YM3438 better just for the clarity and lack of sound dithering. This game overall sounds nice on the YM2612, but some of your uploads of games with lower input volume like Street Fighter II SCE, Samurai Shodown and Mortal Kombat 3 would certainly benefit from the MegaAmp.

Ok, just listened to your original recording of this soundtrack on your Model 1 VA3 and compared it side by side with this new recording and the difference is nothing short of amazing!! The bass is much more well pronounced and the drums are more audible. Amazing work on your modded Genesis. Bravo! Also, took you long enough to upload another video! Was starting to have no more Mega Drive soundtracks to listen to :/

The MegaAmp has a nice, rich sound. Honestly, I would have just thought this was a high-quality model 1 recording if you didn't specify. Although it sounds much clearer than anything I think the original soundchip was capable of producing.

It's the ASIC (built-in to the VDP/PSG) YM3438 so it's still not totally "ideal" as if you turn your speakers/headphones up and listen there is still some low level noise from the rest of the chip surrounding the FM core. It's impossible to get rid of this without just installing a discrete FM chip. The YM3438 itself while being mostly YM2612 compatible does output at a slightly higher resolution so there's less grit in the sound. So really the MegaAmp mod brings out a little more of what the Model 2 could have been capable of. The ironic thing is the MegaAmp is a simpler design, with fewer parts, than the official schematic which is needlessly complex and because of that complexity very noisy. The original sound circuit in the model 2, at least the really common VA1/1.8 revision is horribly designed. It is possible that the engineers of the time assumed it was "good enough" considering most TVs of the era had equally horrible speakers and that most people would connect the console via RF. Obviously now that consumer equipment is better than it ever was before we notice the faults a lot more readily.

I heard it with my good earbuds, sounds awesome. But yeah, skimping out with a soundchip that is actually worse than the original never made sense to me, but your comment about the primitive TV's at the time is a very valid one. My dad had a Model 1 back in 1990, and he says his Trinitron was state of the art at that time, and as he described it to me, I was like... "Seriously?" XD Although, and this might sound ridiculous, I feel like TV's of today have that same exact problem. Because they're trying to make them overall smaller and more lightweight, the sound on some of the cheaper ones is simply abysmal, and even the higher end ones aren't much better than a good CRT TV.

Chibi Romano My main retro gaming TV's a flat trinitron Sony Wega from about 10 years ago, and it sounds great (which was a motivator in wanting to make my consoles sound better). Of course, it also weighs 200+ pounds and is a pain to move. Most newer TV's really need some kind of external sound system, which is just silly when they keep trying to make them more narrow, thus making an external sound system more necessary. It'd be interesting to see a modern LCD/LED screen in a bigger CRT style housing.

I know they're making them smaller, and that doesn't bother me, however, I'm almost certain it's intentional because they're in cahoots with the sound system companies, though I might be conspiring a bit too much though. You know, I like them being small, it makes it easier to mount to the wall for one (like the Vizio in my bedroom), and it saves your back when you try to move it. Anyways, shifting our focus back to this video, which of the Genesis Shinobi tracks is your favorite? For me, it's unanimously The Revenge of/Super Shinobi. Just curious to see what the general opinion is.

What exactly is the MegaAmp? I do like the strong drums and clarity here, though some instruments seemed to sound a bit better on the model 1 (in Izayoi for example).

Basically it is a fancy name for a simple opamp circuit. It's a mod you splice in, in place of the original onboard amplifier. What makes it "special" is mostly the values of the components used and the quality of the amplifier IC. It attempts to emulate the balance and filtering of a Model 1 (at least the version I built does) and that is the real innovation of it. The amplifier IC itself is worlds beyond what was easily available back in the early-mid 90s. That's the main reason for the clarity and treble compared to the amplifiers built back then. One commenter here asked if I could build one and I figured I would take a shot at it. The sound is pretty exceptional I think but it's also not necessarily representative of the real console. Even though the circuit has provisions for filtering, the slew rate of the component used (a TL072) is going to result in a much more defined output at the high end, so there's going to be a lot more treble. I also built a version of the circuit with a more period-correct LM358 opamp, but it clips a bit and I suspect would require rebalancing of the components of the circuit to remedy. I still plan on doing regular Model 1 uploads but I will throw some of these uploads out there too--probably mainly so people can compare or decide if they like the MegaAmp sound.

The only difference I noticed between the Model 2 sound chip on my end is with Contra: Hard Corps. The main electric guitar in the stage 1 music on Model 2 is faded out a little.

If not Zero Wing, definitely Lightning Force: Quest for the Darkstar, AKA Thunder Force IV. If you haven't heard that soundtrack, go and do that right now. TechnoSoft SERIOUSLY knew how to rock that Genesis sound.

Calm down lol. For one, there's nothing fake about this. It's a real console with a mod applied. For two, if you're so grossly offended by that, that's fine I'm not stopping Model 1 recordings. No one's putting a gun to your head to listen to something you don't like. Peace
