I cant decide which I like better... I think I'm going to have to go with PSG, but only by a slight margin...
Recorded off an FM modded US Master System

The PSG version is what I like to call the "Epic" version of Magical Sound Shower. And I love it for that.

Me van a crucificar, pero aunque en PSG se oye más épico prefiero el FM, suena más limpio y sin tanto ruido, se que uno de los canales del PSG era noise, pero es demasiado ruido para mí gusto... Saludos... 😁

Nice how the original cart featured both versions - I prefer the PSG as it is how I remember it sounding when playing it on sms bitd :-)

+IIFierceDeityII The FM is not my favorite. PSG sounds so much better and defined. The FM sounds fuzzy and is missing something vital.

It was a good chip and some people really got a lot out of it (see Sonic Chaos, Sonic 1 8 bit, etc) but when underutilised it's not great.

Gotta go with PSG. FM is just too clean and in turn makes it sound rather generic, especially when compared to how raw PSG sounds during the breakdown at the halfway point of the song.

The psg sound chip is Texas Instruments SN76489

why did master system's fm sound better than genesis?

Because the genesis has an inferior fm sound chip and is also using the crappy PSG sound chip at the same time. The combination of these two chips is what creates the "gritty" sound

Keegan Andersson Tbh, it seems like you've only bothered with many western developed games. Listen to stuff like the Streets of Rage 2 OST.

I'm not saying the genesis didn't have great music, it certainly did. It's just that the fm chip in the master system had superior sound quality (10 bit MS VS 9 bit genesis). I will say though that the genesis played much LOUDER, which I personally like a lot.

Also the YM2612/YM3438 in the genesis shares a lot of similarities with the YM2151, which is actually the predecessor to the YM2413 chip that's in the master system.

Keegan Andersson i don't get it, dreamcast has the same yamaha sound processor as saturn, but they didn't carry over this fm chip to the genesis? there are some similarities in the sound output, but it handles horn-like sounds MUCH better than genesis

FM doesn't sound good because this version of the song wasn't designed for FM, the Outrun 3D version is designed for it. Same, the Outrun 3D version (designed for FM) doesn't sound as good on PSG.
