I remember finding out that the sound effects for R were loose wave files. I replaced "go" with a fart sound..."Ready, set, braaap"

But what about the actual music files? Could you replace the R music with, say, Sonic Adventure music? Or music from any Sonic game thereafter really since many of them had lyrics

@@OnlyEpicEmber On that topic, I remember discovering that the music in Sonic Adventure 1's original PC port was just WMA files. I made a bunch of music swaps as a result. Some of them were fitting like replacing Emerald Coast's theme with Palmtree Panic's theme from the JP/PAL version of Sonic CD, others not so much like replacing Gamma's theme with Iron Man by Black Sabbath... (Get it, 'cause he's made of metal?... I was a dumb teenager...)

When you realise that the standalone Sonic R box had a Y2K compliant badge on it. Ah yes, a racing game that needs to count it's own time. I guess it makes sense for time trial date codes, but really...

I'm sure you've probably mentioned this on twitter or the like but, in current-year retrospect, Sonic and Knuckles Collection is even MORE fascinating with the context that some of the pc-ified soundtrack is taken from early prototype builds of the original game, before all the guest-musician shenanigins took place.

Some interesting facts: -Some copies of Sonic R PC didn't have music on the disc to manufacturing forgetting to add it. -Sonic & Knuckles Collection can be modded to add the original Genesis music. -Ecco the Dolphin has a mod that fixes all the bugs and adds the Sega CD music.

I used to play Sonic R on the pc all the time back in 2003 when I got my old compac pc. I loved it such an underrated game. There's this interview with one of the developers responsible for the port of Sonic CD, and on how his team managed to port the game to Windows before Windows gaming was mainstream and DirectX was a thing. It's a really fascinating read: www.sonic-cult.org/dispart.php?catid=1&gameid=5&subid=2&artid=2 (Initial releases of Sonic CD for the PC didn't use DirectX, though the more common later releases do)
@ThomasJeff1898
@ThomasJeff1898 5 жыл бұрын
Edit (30/3/2020): The link to that interview works now for reasons I do not know. That is all. I'm sorry to say this, but the Sonic Cult site is down for good as when I clicked on that link, it shows Sonic in a shocked state while the tab says "IT"S OVER". You might have to place another source for that interview.

The first Sonic CD release was actually bundled with HP PCs in 1996, developed alongside the Sega CD release in an attempt to appeal to gamers in WIndows 95. (I know this stuff because this was my first PC game, and my first Sonic game.)

You're forgetting how panicked people were at the time that everything from their computers to the electrical grid would just straight-up quit working when Y2K hit because the average person knew jack squat about how computers worked. Probably a lot of people just slapped labels like that on their products in the hopes of getting people to distrust their competitors who didn't.

Fun fact about the Panzer Dragoon port: the PC version's source code is the only surviving version. When the third entry in the series, Orta, was released, it had an emulated PC version built in as a bonus.
@atomicskull6405
@atomicskull6405 7 жыл бұрын
It wasn't emulated. The original Xbox was based largely on PC hardware and used a stripped down Win32 kernal and DirectX 8 so they just set up an environment that provided for all the OS calls the PC version used.

If I remember correctly, it was the source code to _Panzer Dragoon Saga_ that Sega lost - after all, Sega already ported _Panzer Dragoon_ (but not _Zwei_ ?) to the original Xbox

19:53 Is THAT why the music sounds different whenever I try to look it up? I had this collection as a kid and whenever I try to look up the specific music from this collection, the result always sounds different. And not different like "it's slightly different because of a warped memory", but different like it sounds like a completely different remix. Is everyone just uploading the MIDI songs online while I always heard the FM Synthesizer?

Thanks for the trip back down memory lane. Some oft forgotten SEGA arcade titles that appeared on the PC during the embryonic stages of 3D acceleration were MANX TT Superbike which shipped with a 3DFX Glide version and an ultra rare version of Sega Rally 95 with Direct3D acceleration. The Sega Rally 95 D3D version was only available as a package with a Righteous 3D Voodoo 1 card from memory although I could be wrong on the card brand. One of it's features was variable weather which would change depending on a particular key press during the load screen. Both these 3D accelerated versions have been recorded and are on KZbin, searchable with "MANX TT Glide" and "Sega Rally 95 Direct3D".

Sonic R is my very first Sonic game and the reason I got into Sonic games. I fucking love it. What other racing game has you racing _on foot_ (though ironically it's the slowest characters who cheat and use vehicles) on rollercoaster or marble run style tracks, one of which (Radical City) appears to take place inside a Pro Pinball Timeshock cabinet? (Besides Mad Dash on the original Xbox I guess) The only thing I don't like about it is that is has not enough tracks, not enough characters (though it does at least have a fair amount) and it doesn't have the Saturn's special effects, such as the translucent crystal effect on the track Radiant Emerald (the Sonic version of Rainbow Road) though I would have loved both the Saturn track combined with the PC version's trippy colored lighting for that track. What it does have however is very good, so it's short but very sweet like a piece of baklava.

As I recall msot people didn't like it because the controls were really wonky and it was kind of buggy. I seem to recall it being really hard just to stay on course much less win. :p

I don't know if the soundtrack was the same or not, but I actually did once come across a perfect version of Crazy Taxi on PC. It was some shady file-sharing stuff, but it ran really well on my dinky little Gateway Pentium 3 machine, and it had all the branding intact. I think it may have actually been a self-contained arcade emulator with a pre-launch options menu? I dunno for sure, it's been 11 years now. Had a blast with it though.
