Time Traveler by Sega was labeled the World's First Holographic Video Game on its release in 1991. But how does it play today?

The awkward part is that when Sega cd came out it's first games included fmv titles that worked the same way. Night Trap is a even more interesting case as it was not first programmed for the Sega Cd but for a Aborted Hasbro VHS based video game system after it was cancelled the developers had already filmed the footage so they ported to the Sega system.

You missed what I always thought was the most interesting thing about that style or projection...it actually predates modern technology and was used on stage over 100 years ago and was called "Pepper's Ghost". It is also the same trick used for the Haunted Mansion and is now being used to have computer generated dead celebs play "live" in concert.

I vividly remembered seeing this at an arcade on a family vacation as a very young kid, up until seeing it on the Internet decades later I assumed it was a false memory because holographic video games (practically) dont exist. It must have left a serious impression cause thats one of the only 3 or 4 things I remember from that entire trip. Edit: Thought it was FMV game because thats the only one I've seen online, it was 100% definitely the fighting game that I remember playing,

Thanks for covering this, Shane. I was mystified by this cabinet as a child, being in a small town and having this at the local arcade was nothing short of magical to a six year old. I remember not really understanding how to play it, but would walk around it looking at it from all angles, wondering what that tv in the bottom was all about. It must not have been a hit because it wasn't around very long. I grew up and when I would mention it to other nerds I would always get a blank stare from all but a few. It might be the most early 90's videogames ever, that mix of technology and playstyle just couldn't and wouldn't exist anytime else. Fitting for a game called Time Traveler.

I very clearly remember playing this at my local Scandia arcade back in the 90s. It was expensive and gimmicky. I remember it being 4 tokens when everything else was 1. And it was hard compared to any other game. I never played the dragon's lair or space Ace arcade games but I can see why they got phased out.

The most amusing thing, without those blocks the illusion is borked : source : me. I own one. And it hasn't been converted to that lame fighting game. The games shipped with extra blocks to replace the default blocks if stolen (I have 2 sets). The laserdisc player is an early 90s model so it's far more reliable than LV1000s used in Dragon's Lair.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu

The first time I saw (and played) this cabinet was at the penny arcade at Disney World in around 1993. The visuals blew me away and I couldn't wait to play it, unfortunately it was also my first experience with a laserdisc game and this game cost $1 at the time. As a format I find LaserDisc fascinating. A very early predecessor to DVD that broke new ground at the time. I also find it interesting that the single thing that made it annoying (having to flip the disc) was solved by later models of the players. In the grand scheme of things it will go down in history similar to VCD's a cool format that has since been completely replaced and forgotten.

It looks like a washing machine... ...but it has an arcade game unlike any other. To be fair, I feel indifferent about the other games that were made like this, being Dragon’s Lair & Space Ace. Sure, it was awesome, but it was just one big quick-time event. But this...this actually feels...better. Even though I know it’s the same as Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace, the “holographic” nature of the console makes this thing SO much better. The only bad thing is the DVD game/PS2 port, but I think that’s to be expected from ports of Don Blooth’s games. Dragon’s Lair got ported to the NES, and Space Ace got ported to the SNES. They were incredibly difficult (although Space Ace knocked the challenge town at least a tad bit). And although the PS2 ACTUALLY had the power to make the game what it actually was, the game lost a big part of it’s charm because of it. Sure, the GAME was the same, but using 3D glasses can’t beat the holographic beauty that the arcade cabinet had.

Such a cool piece of video game history & I would love to see this brought out at more conventions for other people to experience it's unique style as well. The technique being used is a variation on Pepper's Ghost. Pepper's Ghost is where an actor or object is doing something off-stage / off-camera on a plain black background while the main set has a sheet of glass to reflect the image, giving it a ghostly appearance. The most famous example of this effect is the ballroom scene in Disney's Haunted Mansion ride.

Do you know what seems like it would’ve made a great transition onto that holographic machine? … hear me out. Primal rage! I think that they arcade version, even just in the animation style would’ve linked itself very well to translating into a hologram

Played this with my Dad in the 90’s. I’ve not seen one since and couldn’t remember what it was called. I’ve been racking my brains over this for years, thank you

Perfect example of what happens when you've got a solution looking for a problem. Nobody was like "Oh, I have this cool game that would really mostly work with a holographic display. How do I make that happen?" They were like "Oh, I have this extremely limited holographic display concept. What sort of game can we jam into that format?" Just a cool-looking, quarter-stealing gimmick like Dragon's Lair. This is why game design is no longer considered a secondary task for people who knew how to make games using assembly code. Hardcore low-level engineers work their wizardry on game engines while artists and designers figure out how to make things actually compelling without having to worry about the hardware considerations.

I remember playing Time Traveller when my family went to this burger place. I thought the idea was neat but that was about it. I could never get too far and it just ate quarters. Also the cube was a scam! It cost extra quarters for just one! Whole this was still kind of neat to see again

PRINCE GEORGE BC, had this game...1997 at its arcade around the back of the Plaza located at fifth...I cant remember the street behind where the arcade was....maybe Tabor. The console itself wasnt SEGA, it was black, round short table type with a big curved cover. I thought it was amazing...but I was only at this arcade to play mini glow put in the basement, pool tables, or the Star Trek pinball game with Picard saying"Engage!" Other games there were DR MARIO, and a multiplayer game by SEGA for car racing...play Solo or up to four players. This game of holograms was very neat, but at the time didnt make sense to spend anything on.

I hate the whole "let's make it look good but sacrifice game design & all other aspects." I don't care about super good graphics, I'm happy with last generation graphics for each new game. Great graphics delay release, can make buggy stuff happen, cost a lot to do & you'll find DLC or microtransactions are usually there to make up for the cost, & far more. Sure when I was a kid I thought all games were better & only good if the graphics are. Now, at age 31, I literally have games that are kinda using bland visuals but are more fun to play than AAA games, & aren't games there for fun anyway?
