I have been teasing this series for a very long time...and that's because it took a VERY LONG TIME to make...a twenty episode retrospective on every Sega developed arcade racing game in 3D! Because whether its retro gaming or modern pc gaming...Sega is the KING of the arcade racing genre! So buckle up and get ready for a retrogaming ride!
THE RULES FOR INCLUSION: 1) It must have had an arcade release (So no Sega GT) 2) It must be in 3D (Bye Bye Outrunners, etc etc) and 3) you MUST be racing against an opponent and not just a timer (sorry Crazy Taxi, Wild Riders)
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kurangui, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane,
tobemorecrazy, Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Humanoide70, Ben Parfitt, Holder Schmidt, Tim Lehner, Shad Uttam, Dan L, James Mann, Richard Schneider, Coupon Joe, Sunder Raj, Dorfus the Maple Syrup Man, John Booty and Craig M!
Up next: Scud Race! This is the retro gaming equivalent to SOLID GOLD! Sega nailed it with this game...until they cancelled the Model 3 home port on Sega Dreamcast and left it locked to arcades! But with the Supermodel 3 emulator everyone can experience this 15/10 arcade racing game! Plus a tech demo for the Dreamcast version was released last year so we can see SOME OF Scud Race running on Dreamcast spec hardware.
But this is basically Daytona USA levels of good...except faster and more arcadey! Or like Sega Rally with less dirt! Honestly it reminds me most of OutRun 2 except since its an arcade exclusive its a bit of a Sega hidden gem and a Dreamcast hidden gem all rolled into one as we do have Dreamcast development footage!
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

@@VideoGameEsoterica I think that's currently in a state of limbo and no one knows who owns them. However Sega did reuse these tracks in Outrun 2, sort of. I followed the gaming magazines in those days and I remember how unbelievably amazing the model 3 was relative to everything else available at the time. The screenshots of this and Virtua Fighter 3 looked like they had arrived from a different planet. And that's without even seeing them in motion! Most people in the UK were playing Colin McRae rally, Toca touring cars or the Saturn version of Sega Rally at that time and were utterly blown away.

OMG!!! I remember playing super GT!! Sometime in 98/99 at a mall next to my house when I used to live in the middle east. I was in absolute awe at the graphics and speed for its time, the track was wonderful it had parts where you go in an underwater tunnel and see dolphins and fish swimmin, man it was so mesmerizing I'd stare at it even running its demo mode. I got a ps2 and an xbox a little after that but those machines cnever got to the visuals of that amazing arcade racer. If you go into the debug mode with the dip switches, you can find some completely insane stuff in there. Simulation looking effects like the waving flags and the particles bouncing off the road? This was not a racing game. This was a true production, ala Beauty and the Beast. Any arcade that does not have one of the mainline AM2 racing games, Indiana Jones pinball (the Williams one) or House of the Dead, shall not constitute an "arcade" in my book. It's funny how people like the FGC used to complain about arcades having "too many racing and shooting games" through the mid-late 2000s but in reality the games they were bashing were masterpieces like this. People absolutely took these games for granted. As a board owner of this, I eventually hope to own a proper Model 3 driving cabinet; my friend is selling his Japanese sit-down LeMans24 cabinet that he got from a warehouse raid in North Carolina so I hope we can get it in the house for my birthday... fingers crossed!

One think I've mentioned before but scud, the entire game was modeled with quads. If you load up scud in the supermodel emulator, and change from quads to triangles, you'll see even the road looks a bit broken in the triangle version. Some of the cars are visibly missing polys and have other distortions with the triangle renderer. It wouldn't have been an easy port, unless they really remodeled a lot of the game.

Well just stick two triangles together. Using strips, this would not require additional hardware power. Problem in emulating those quads is, there is a concave and a convex way to split those quads.

Sega really went overboard with these licenses. These games would have played well without it. If they did like Namco and made fantasy cars like in Risge Racer, Sega could just rerelease this. The Dodge, Porsche and Ferrari really don’t add to this. I think Daytona is kinda stuck, and outrun without the Ferrari doesn’t feel like Outrun, but this game I didn’t know had licensed cars until I looked now.
