This was a fun watch--I was fairly familiar with many of the code name conventions, but the GG as Mercury was one of the most recent I'd learned of. I found it fascinating that they stuck to such code naming schemes for so long. Oh that Venus prototype is so cool! Okay--didn't know the Jupiter either--nice! The Neptune design looks so nifty--would've enjoyed having that one if it'd come to fruition.

Got some major nostalgia vibes just thinking back to gaming in the 90s. At the time I was the designated Nintendo kid in the neighborhood but thankfully my next door neighbor was all about Sega (even during the Master System days) so it wasn't hard to keep up with both companies. Much fun as I had with Sega the only console exclusive franchise I was severely jealous of was Phantasy Star, to the point I pooled my allowance money with my friend so he could afford IV.

One of the most happy moments of my KZbin life is watching your documentaries. I have one anecdote, my city was far from the Capital and no official Sega products were available, however American EGM was my window into the world of Sega. I was confused by the “Sega Seal of Quality” as it looked like a Golden CD, and since Then I thought the Sega Genesis games were coming one day in the form of the cool CD ROM media, and some years ahead, it happened, hehehe.

Am I the only person watching retro gaming but doesn’t own anything more than a switch. I watch the videos to experience the old days but I can’t be bothered to even game anymore. I haven’t touched my switch in months. I mostly played the Genesis sonic and knuckles was the most rad thing out. The Dreamcast’s controller with that built in mini console was so cool too I wish that idea came to fruition. Digimon and Tamagotchi were all the rave at the time and it was a great expansion on that concept.

Segaretro.org looked into the whole 'no project Uranus' thing and from what they were able to gleam the reason for that is as follows: 'Hiroyuki Miyazaki offered a few explanations for this, saying when pronounced in Japanese it sounds like "Uranu" or "won't sell", what he called "an ominous name for a project."' BTW this channel is incredible and the fact you don't have more subscribers make me think that the people who are behind youtube's algorithm should go to trial in the Hague.

Another possible theory for Project Uranus is the CDX. It's a combo unit much like Neptune would've been, so it would make some sense to put them next to each other. Plus, it was released during the time frame that Sega was still using the planetary code names.

I have always wanted a Saturn but never got one. I DREAMT about it multiple times. But it came out after the disappointing Sega CD (awesome system and totally worth it, but the line-up was anemic) and the 32X (the less said, the better). I couldn't justify another Sega hardware gamble after that level of failure. (Thankfully I got a Dreamcast later.) NOW I could get a Saturn... but the games I want are insanely expensive, and so I would need to mod it to play backups. And emulation has finally caught up with the Saturn, thankfully, so... maybe I'll never own one. What would be the point? Just to have it? Sigh... I know they lost the source code for a lot of their classic games, but why isn't Sega considering a Mini Saturn? Just do a bang-up job on the emulation on a few lost classics (PDS, all of the Shining Force 3 episodes, Burning Rangers, etc.) and you'll have my money!

I’d love a Saturn Mini! There was a short time where the Saturn was $200 and came with three games and it really should have driven sales but I’ve always contended that once Final Fantasy VII was announced that was the end. As anyone on the fence went to PS for that game and publishers followed. Best I can recall until that Saturn and PS were almost even in the USA and the Saturn was leading in Japan. Then things turned after that. Thanks for watching 🪐

Hey GTV - you have been and still are the best out there the best channel on KZbin that covers so much of what I enjoy. Thank you so much for bringing back the TOP Commenters portion at 4:16 again. That is awesome to see and I hope you'll keep it as it encourages me and others to keep writing and corresponding with you! I had heard of other Sega units with different names but nothing like this! Yes, it would have have been so awesome to take that all with me to college and sneak in a few places. 6:18 would be Venus!! I wonder - was there an American version of this that I could have taken with me?? Didn't hear of one but, I was so busy insane with year round classes. Still, I certainly would have got one during a trip to Japan but I guess I didn't know or understand the connection (would it work) for me. Ah, the 32X - now this is what I called smart marketing! The Genesis could play ALL of the older Master System Games and the 32 was another attachment away for the 32-bit and still have all your Genesis games! No switching electrical ports and ports, just a smooth switch-over and there ya go! And even though I didn't to experience the Venus, what a brilliant idea to save on funds than having to buy yet another system and then research and hope they had what you wanted on there! Too bad that one AND the Jupiter didn't came to be... the Jupiter could have been out years before the Nintendo 64 and who knows what it could have done? Maybe enough to keep Sega afloat Maybe in another Universe, we can only imagine... It very much WAS a war, from 1990 onwards, Sega and Nintendo really were head to head with Nintendo loosing in those early years... the Super Nintendo was great, no doubt, but I remember the Phillips... and for the life of me, I can't recall a SINGLE GAME ever produced on it. Ah yes, the 9th Planet PLUTO. Just like we learned there were 4 Oceans versus 5... I still think Pluto should have been grandfathered in or something. Don't you? What about Sailor Pluto from the original Sailor Moon?? "Your demoting me to WHAT? Oh, I'll show you the meaning of demotion all right! You, COME HERE... " I've heard in whispered tones this is the REAL origin on Mortal Combat with Scorpion's Attack. But I guess only Trista and Serena with ever know. (Their American Names) BTW - Love the different Sega Games background music. Awesome stuff as always man, please keep it up and especially the top commenters. My friend how have you been? I see this amazing channel is still rocking hard and that puts a huge smile on my face. I am a connoisseur of all things Sega and this video has to be one of your very best. So many memories... I started gaming back in 1986 with the Nes and Master System. At that time I was very much a casual gamer that longed to have the arcade experience at home. Nothing irked me more than seeing "just like the arcade" splashed across a box only to find said claims to be a stretch at best. That is until the new super 16-bit systems started to show up in gaming mags. I am a cynic by nature and didn't trust anything EGM (for example) said about these new "super machines." Christmas was around the corner and my parents wanted to know if I wanted one of the new consoles...but which one? Almost daily I flip flopped between the TG-16 and Genesis until one fateful day in late November of 1989. I just purchased a brand new game for my Nes that was unlike anything I had ever witnessed before and I wanted to show it off (Ninja Gaiden). I took my brand new Nes game pak (remember that) to my best friends house to show him my awesome bounty. When I arrived I promptly handed him my new game and told him he needed to play this game. What struck me as odd was his reaction to it was ho-hum or meh. He told me he was playing something new that I had to see as well and it was going to smoke anything I brought over...I thought, "challenge accepted." Unfortunately for me, I walked into his room and found a game I had seen before but only in the arcades. He was playing Ghouls n' Ghosts for the Sega Genesis and my jaw quite literally hit the floor. I had never experienced graphics and sound like that before in my life. In an instant I went from casual gamer to hardcore in a matter of seconds. I knew I had to have one and was willing to do whatever it took to get one. Thankfully, my dad is a gamer like me and I had him pick me up just so he could see the Genesis in action. His reaction was one of shock and disbelief at how close to the arcade the Sega Genesis was. You better believe that Christmas I got my...ahem we got our Sega Genesis. That first day I got Altered Beast (pack-in), Ghouls n' Ghosts, and Space Harrier 2. Just after Christmas I got an IOU game (my parents couldn't find it) Phantasy Star 2...I think it was January. Even when I got my Snes on Christmas of '91 my Sega Genesis was still king in our house. I recieved Sonic The Hedgehog the very same day as Super Mario World. My friends and I held a super 16-bit showdown that holiday that lasted an entire week. My dad (school teacher) even printed out score sheets for us so we could rate them. Even though it was a close battle Sonic The Hedgehog came in with a win for being so original. Those were good times my friend, good times indeed. Ever since that Christmas of '91 I have rated gaming consoles and still carry the tradition today. Last year we (fiancee, friends, family and I) pitted the Xbox Series X and PS5 against each other...but that's a story for another time.

Hey I’ve been good! What a great story! For me it turned out something the same except I got phantasy star 2 and final fantasy 2 at the same time. Oh man what an Xmas! I saw another comment but it dissolved! I guess google didn’t like it. Anyway I was referring to the rush to next gen, like 32x or fox chip or 3do of what have you through the eyes of people who weren’t there and couldn’t see how huge the change was to a new system. Sure it’s probably hard to discern now so I can see why people would be puzzled at the 32x without the right frame of context. Actually in 2011 I stopped paying attention to all new games and so since then I’ve missed out on a lot and just don’t know what’s going on with great detail. Honestly I haven’t seen an Xbox one in Japan ever let alone the new one 😂 so the lay of the land is different and my point of view in truth isn’t complete

@@GTV-Japan Very true story. The flat earthers just have a different idea of what the planets are. Well, it depends on what flat earther you talk to. There are many flat earthers who believe that the planets are more like wondering stars than actual physical planets that you can inhabit through space travel. Many flat earthers believe we can't leave the earth's atmosphere due to a giant dome known as the firmament. I've done a lot of research on what they believe. It's a very fascinating case study.

The first time I saw one was a guy working at a paid parking lot was playing with one on the job. I don't know what I was more jealous of, the Nomad or the job that let him play it all day on the clock

@@GTV-Japan lol that's awesome. Everyone I ask about the Nomad, has never even heard of it. But when I show them what it is they flip their wigs. Haha

@@GTV-Japan yeah I always found that odd, I mean, who wouldn't want a portable Genesis? I know it was expensive back then but still though. Promotion would have brought that little console a long way.

Well that’s true but it is Uranus in the sense that there’s a faint ring and it’s tilted 90 degrees. Thanks for the correction
