Hyper Duel a game by Technosoft, makers of the Thunder force series. This started as an arcade game and was remade for Sega Saturn 1996, with improved graphics, music and some gameplay adjustments. While this game is surprisingly unknown, it's considered to be as good as Thunder Force IV and V and is sold for 200$ or more on ebay.
Its mechanics are very simple. With one button you attack as a space ship and with the other one you are a slow but strong mecha. Combining both buttons will give you more attack power but it will slowly deplete the "bomb" bar. -

They stretched themselves all over the place. There were very few genres of video game they didn't release, Technosoft even made a visual novel dating game, a beat em up called Nekketsu Oyako, some sort of Space Harrier clone where the player actually sometimes went to space called Feedback for the MSX2, and a Harvest Moon clone called "My Garden". Also a number of tactical RPGs, the last game they made was a licensed title of a Gundam style mecha series from the 70s called Getter Robo. Most people just hail the Thunderforce series, or at least the later ones. And RTS fans in the know will hail Herzog 2. Hyper Duel is more just lightning in a bottle, not indicative of a god tier or god like or even a god fearing developer. Just a lucky catch. Also Blast Wind for saturn, one of their later titles and a vertical scrolling shooter a genre which they have no excuse for failing at seemed like a single-developer "team"'s first effort.

@@ianswift3521 well Electric Underground rated Blast Wind as one of the greatest shmups ever made. Staff from the company formed Arsys who made the worlds first ever 3D game for a home platform. Them more staff left and they made games like Lords of Thunder. I think they made some of the best games ever. Definite god tier.

The whole soundtrack is brilliant. However, "Full Burner" and "Nightsweeper" are up there with "Cosmo Babylon". I would pick these three as the top compositions on the game.

Amazing SHMUP. Super tight controls, awesome weapons and power ups. One if the few space shooters where your character could transform from ship to robot, too.

@@jarrettriley5967 that one was made because the porting team didn't gave two fucks about optimizing the game properly. Paper Mario Thousand-Year Door runs at 30fps because of the enhanced visuals and running on the same engine as Origami King.

Has anyone noticed the strong Gundam influence in this game? A lot of the bosses resemble Zakus and there's even a Colony drop mid game. There's even a little bit of Macross with the (non-Gerwalk) Variable fighters.

Killer game!! i have the arcade version for my Mame emulator. However, the Saturn version is the best version. You can actually choose between arcade and Saturn version, which is a cool feature. The music was remixed for the Saturn version and it totally rocks!!. Technosoft created a shoot'em up masterpiece!!

I think Sega's last two consoles were shooters heavens. I own 5 Dream Casts, the one I bought before they quit is the only one that plays copied games. That is the one I use to play Border Down and Zero Gunner, but I also own the original copies of Mars Matrix, GunBird 2, Giga Wing 2 and Bangai-O. All of them are incredibly good for my tastes even though I had only played R-Type and Life Force on my NES before Mars Matrix.For the Saturn I own Darius Gaiden and although not a shmup, Guardian Heroes. I missed on the Saturn back in the day, and damn if I don't regret that. Now I track games and create a good collection. Is there any other shmup you can recommend? I would like to play them all, no preferences, I even played Silpheed: The Lost Planet for PS2(I don't like it that much)

Gigawing 1 & 2, Gunbird 1 & 2, Sengoku Ace, Radiant Silvergun, Blazing Star, Castle of Shinagami III (for the Wii) to name a few... I am sure there are plenty I have missed. I love Shmups too but I am not the best at them.

Nah! you must be referring to Thunderforce V. Both games were developed during the same time. Thunderforce IV came out years earlier (1992) for the Genesis/Mega Drive and the sound production was completely different. Nevertheless, it had a killer soundtrack for sure!!.

Yes, but also one of the most overrated games imo. It IS a great game, no doubt, even for one like myself who prefers vertical shooters. But I can find better shooters on the Saturn then Hyper Duel. Personally I think Shienryu, Radiant Silver and both Strikers games are way better than this.
