This game destroys the notion that a Saturn 2D Sonic game wouldn’t have been sufficiently ‘next gen’. Crash Bandicoot and Mario 64 were marvels at the time but this has aged considerably better.
@ImperishableDani4 жыл бұрын
I think more or less the problem was the need to push 3D. Sega had shifting priorities because Saturn was supposed to be a top of the line 2D console, quite similar to the neo geo AES. But at the last minute they put in a 3D chip to compete with playstation. At the time 3D was the hot shit and if their Sonic game didn't have it, then at the time it wasn't worth doing, which sucks because a 2D Sonic game on the 2D behemoth Saturn would've been amazing. Oh well. At least we got nights
@DTM-Books4 жыл бұрын
I would certainly agree, but the videogame public's opinion was completely different in 1995. Back then, they lost all interest with 2D games and wanted only 3D polygon games. Early Saturn titles like Astal, Shinobi Legions, Golden Axe: The Duel, Clockwork Knight, Darius Gaiden and Galactic Attack went over like lead balloons. Nobody wanted to touch any of 'em, and nobody wanted to pay $300-$400 for side-scrolling sprite games they already had on Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. Unfair, yes. But that was the mood at the time, and a 2D Sonic the Hedgehog would have not only failed spectacularly, it would have buried Saturn as well.
@EOTA5644 жыл бұрын
That is the popular wisdom but I think the problem with those 2D titles is that they either weren’t that good or didn’t use the technology to enhance the gameplay experience. Astal probably didn’t sell particularly well because it didn’t really appeal to western aesthetic preferences at the time. Oddworld was a 2D game and was the 21st top selling title on PS1 because it was a great game and Rayman sold 4m copies, more than Resident Evil or Driver.
@RippahRooJizah4 жыл бұрын
@@EOTA564 Trust me, there were people that would ignore a 2D game just for being 2D, regardless of quality. I even once saw a bit of a magazine comparing SotN to Castlevania 64, with the writer praising the latter and treating SotN like crap purely due to graphics. Not to say aesthetics didn't matter. I've seen people pass over Skullgirls and Guilty gear because they, and I quote, "look like cartoons".

Thanks for posting this. Sega blew it when they didn't release a sequel or an update to this awesome title. I was a big Sega fan back in the day. But sometimes it was like hanging out with a friend that was really talented but would do incredibly stupid things at times. Like they simply wanted to lose. Astal, Sonic, Nights, Panzer Dragoon, Gun Valkyrie, Shinobi, Virtua Fighter...How did Sega lose when they have an exclusive IP portfolio that's as strong if not stronger than Nintendo's? Pathetic marketing and releasing too much hardware too fast. "sigh"
@CrazyDuckBE10 жыл бұрын
Can't really blame Sega for not making a sequel for a game that sold so bad that they even didn't release it in Europe. But it was the 3D poly craze at the time and when was the last time "gamers" know what they want. It's sad because it's a beautiful game and you can see why SOJ wanted a console that could take sprites to the next level. But sprites was "old" and we all know what happened to the poor old Saturn :c Maybe if Sega would re-release this now as a downloadable title it could work. People seem to have found a new love for sprites in the last few years. And there are some Saturn games that need some love and playtime. But Sega seems to be playing it INCREDIBLY safe when it comes to any of the IP's they hold. The only thing of the "old" Sega IP's that's seeing the light of day these days is Sonic.
@LogainAblar10 жыл бұрын
CrazyDuckBE Okay. Let's look at that from a different perspective. The original Street Fighter was a failure. But that didn't stop Capcom from making a SF2. How'd the sequels turn out? The original Monster Hunter was a failure. How's the series doing now? Capcom didn't finally take Street Fighter into the 3D realm until 2009. Street Fighter 2 debuted in 1991. Street Fighter EX doesn't count because Capcom didn't develop it, Arika did, which is why it sucked. Here we are in 2014 and 2D bitmapped games are all the rage especially with indie groups. Actually, 2D games never died regardless of how popular polygon games became. Also keep in mind that every single portable ever released since 1998 is powerful enough to run Astal or a possible sequel. So Sega has no excuse. Sonic has been a dog's lunch for the last 4 generations. The reboot of Nights sucked. Sega won't do anything with Gun Valkyrie. Panzer Dragoon's best days were on Saturn with Zwei. Virtual Fighter is the only great series that's still active that Sega has left. But for platformers, Astal is a total no brainer for anything from 3DS to tablets or smartphones. I know we're making the same points essentially but the adoption of 3D during the PS1 era was no excuse when 2D based games were still popular even then.
@steve512345678910 жыл бұрын
***** Sega couldn't afford another fuck up they were already in dying straights trying to make profit. Sony, and Nintendo could afford there loses. But a lose for sega was another stab wound. Was already looking like gg after the 32x they actually poured the same amount of money into that as the sega genesis launch.
@CrazyDuckBE10 жыл бұрын
***** The 2D sprite games were rare in that generation of consoles compared to the new 3d model games. I can't imagine any of the 2d sprite games in that era being in a top 10 sales chart. And the Saturn couldn't do 3D as well or in the same way as N64 or PS1 (If I heard correctly something about the the models not having a triangle poly's but a diamond shape.) It may be popular now again, but back then, it sure wasn't and video game companies are still companies and want to must bang for their buck. As for not trying again straight away with their newer IP's, it's like steve says. Sega started to bleed money from hardware not doing well after the Mega Drive. And if a new IP doesn't sell your hardware, what's the point of making a sequel when ppl still have not bought more systems. But as for NOW today I said it in the original post as well. Sega should really let Sonic rest for a few years (even tough I love that blue bastard :) ) and bring back remakes/sequels of their other IP's, because again, they are sitting on some awesome IP's that they are just doing nothing with. And a few year break for Sonic might do him and Sonic Team some good as well.

I disagree personally. I know the popular opinion these days is only rose-tinted when it comes to the saturn, but from my experience, bar a few games the PSX had a better library period. Saturn my have been superior machine tech wise but it's best criterias are based around arcade ports, racers, shooters and tournament fighters. Personally I hate fighters besides brawlers, racers date horribly, arcade ports are surpassed by Mame which leaves shooters (for which there are admittedly some great titles, tho rail shooters, to me, like panzer dragoon are frankly meh!). PSX has a far more impressive list of titles that stand-up today imo. but hey i stress its just my opinion

Somewhere in the universe, the Goddess Antowas created a world from a single jewel. On the world, Ouartilia, she created the sky, earth, and air. To inhabit the world, she created two humans-from a green jewel, a girl: Leda, who has the power to make things live on Quartilia. And from a red Jewel, a boy: Astal, whose purpose was to protect Leda. Content with her creation, Antowas slept. While she slept, the evil Jerado tried to take over Quartilia. To ensure victory, Jerado created a warrior: Geist. Geist kidnapped Leda, and held her at the bottom of the ocean. In an effort to get her back, Astal tore Quartilia apart, awakening Antowas. As punishment, Antowas banished Astal to Quartilia's room Leda took pity on Astal, and gave him her jewel. Once Astal and Jerado were dealt with, Antowas went back to sleep. However, Geist was still free, and Quartilia was not restored from the changes Jerado wrought. From his prison on the moon, Astal witnessed Geist kidnap Leda again. Consumed with the need to protect her, he freed himself and returned to Quartilia. Now Astal journeys in search of Leda through a Quartilia transformed by Jerado's dark design, along with a strange bird who for some reason just won't leave him alone.

I always thought this game was so strange. Beautiful music and graphics. Terrible voice acting from the main character. Opening cutscene seemed to hint that this was a Japanese cartoon series at one point? Or they were hoping it would really take off but didn't?

How can a Beat Em Up be called a platform game? It's like calling double dragon a platformer because there are a few platforms in there also.

I know this reply is six years late, but it was effectively a battle against the true rise of polygonal games. People were used to seeing 2D sprites, and even though the Saturn was a particular powerhouse in that regard, there was just no competing against the eye popping quality of seeing a WipeOut for the first time. Believe me, as a dyed in the wool Saturn fan back then, I tried! :D

Because Sony are better than Sega when it comes to corporate decisions... Also the Saturn sucked at 3D
