Episode Notes:
1. I used MAME to capture this footage. You know, because Sega has never released it to buy legitimately.
2. The 2 Genesis/Mega Drive sequels are radically different in every way. I still enjoyed them, however.
3. If you'd like me to review the coming Arcade1Up cabinet, let me know in the comments.
4. I think the Sega CD could have done a very nice version of this game. Similar to Final Fight's conversion, the color would need to be dialed back and there would be less enemies on screen, but I bet it would have still kicked ass.
5. I think this would have made a great 32X release as well.
6. My favorite character is Stern by a mile.
7. The Sega System 32 was also host to the 2D masterpiece, Spider-Man the Video Game, another 4 player brawler.

They are struggling with the Ages games. No wonder, they are releasing the old games over an over again. Virtua Racing and the original Columns 2 (which only was released on the Saturn after the Arcace-Version). Rumors say SEGA is unable to port Revenge of Death Adder because there are no more intact cabinets in their posessions to extract the data. And with data, they seem to have problem to port this with music and sound effects.

The first time Death Adder dies, his voice line "Daaayyyuummm" is sampled from Raphael's frustration from Casey Jones escaping in the first Turtles movie. The second time he dies when he falls off with Gilius, his scream is sampled from the policeofficer that falls to his death from the helicopter in Rambo: First Blood. As simply put, it's one of the finest Beat 'Em Ups ever produced! Genuinely baffling this year marks the very first time it's being officially released outside of arcades.. 1 Up Cabinet is nice, but this seriously needs a digital release (Or a physical in a Golden Axe Collection would be beyond measure!) on modern platforms to really make it available to the largest audience possible! I always thought Death Adder's "DAMN!!!" sounded like Raphael's from the 1990 movie. Could they have actually lifted it directly, lowered the pitch, and used it in the game? Go back and rewatch the scene where Raph is chasing (and loses) Casey Jones. The camera shifts to a wide view of the city and you hear Raph scream "DAMN!!!!" in frustration.

BRUH... Cudos for stepping up and giving credit to Arcade1up for FINALLY bringing it home. Not only that, but in the absolute best way possible in my humble opinion - 4 player arcade cab complete with scan lines and all its original artwork and OG Golden Axe as one of the bonus games.PLUS Shinobi and Altered Beast as delicious icing on the cake 😎. While I would have wanted it on the old school systems back in the day, I honestly could care less to have it on the Ni tendo Switch or otherwise, out of it natural arcade habitat. The lastability of this game is nigh on par with genre classics such as TMNT: Turtles in Time and Streets of Rage 2. The feedback when bashing your enemies in the head to death and zapping them with the electric scorpion is just nice and the game length is just right.

If Golden Axe ever gets the streets of rage 4 treatment, I'd want them to take most of the elements of this title for it, would be a great way to spice it up from sor4 too

10:57 - is that a pitch-shifted sampling of Raphael from TMNT screaming "Damn!"? I know Golden Axe sampled voice clips from other 80s/90s movies, but that one feels very unmistakable.

First off, let me say I absolutely LOVE Golden Axe, both the arcade and Genesis versions. A few of the other home ports on computers like the Amiga were pretty decent also. I remember seeing Revenge of Death Adder in a few magazines before it came out and salivating over the screenshots and descriptions. I ran into the two player version of the arcade cabinet some time later. And I have to say... I felt a bit let down by this one. It's not bad or anything, but I don't think the gameplay is as smooth as the original, I don't like the playable characters as much and I don't like pretty much any of the music in this one. I think the way attacks connect, especially when using Stern, just don't feel very satisfying. Visually, it's good for its time, but I feel like some of the animation could have been a little better... not in regard to the number of frames, but instead the actual motion portrayed in those frames. I really wanted to love this game like I loved the first Golden Axe, but I just feel like it isn't as good or replayable, despite the branching paths. Again, I don't hate it, I've played through it, I've completed it a few times. I would have still bought it if it had been released on either the Saturn or Dreamcast. It's just to me, in the pantheon of awesome Sega classics, this would be lower on my personal list than it would be for a lot of other people.

It's the same with other System 32 beat 'em ups, Arabian Fight and Spider-Man: The Video Game, and System 18 D.D. Crew in the arcades. All are beautiful, with loads of large scaling sprites not quite possible on earlier Sega hardware, but all lacking the resonance and long term impact of the older games. IMO, the last decent Sega arcade 2D beat 'em up was Alien Storm and it was several years until their last good arcade beat em up, Dynamite Deka/Die Hard Arcade, showed up. By then, it was pretty much home consoles dominating with the superior Sega BEU experience in the Streets of Rage series and Guardian Heroes ending the run until maybe Dynamite Deka 2 on Dreamcast.

Did anyone notice a lot of the sounds are lifted from movies? A few death screams are from Rambo First Blood. The final boss “daaaaamnnnn!” Death scream is actually Raphael screaming it from the first tmnt movie.

Capcom should have kept at it and also release Alien vs. Predator on Saturn and worldwide this time although some idiots would have said "Nah it's 2D it's obsolete" even though some of the best-selling mega drive or SNES games are late releases such as X-men 2, toy story or donkey kong country which are all 3D games as we all know

I think it was partly due to timing. Publishers were reluctant to port some arcade games at that time if they were a couple of years old, as this would have been when the Saturn was out. And perhaps Sega didn't think hack-and-slash games would sell then. A shame they couldn't have made it a two pack with Golden Axe the Duel.

Scrolling beat em ups were almost completely out of fashion by 1995. Even Capcom greats of the era like Shadow over Mystara tend to have their popularity overstated. They weren't partici commercially successful.

Fantastic game. I did a play through on my channel using Mame. Such a shame this game never got a Saturn release, or even a Dreamcast release. With all of the Sega compilations that have come out over the recent years, this would have been a great addition. I really feel for those that own this PCB, though...like Game Sack Joe. With that well known issue, this REALLY needs to get a home port on the current gen systems.
