They were always at odds with upper management and of course Sega of Japan the, reps wanted the Japanese games localized and managment thought it was a bad idea. I for one was importing games from Japan so I couldn't understand their reasoning. I actually pushed the saturn at my store that's probably why they liked visiting the store it's because of them I was able to get the final four games that were released at the end of the Saturn's life you know them as panzer dragoon saga, burning rangers, shining force 3, and house of the dead. Out of all the reps such as Nintendo and Sony they were my favorite.

In a world where we can easily and effectively emulate Saturn games with official Saturn controllers no less buying any of these games is less about pursuing quality titles and more about collecting artefacts. @@DeathToJihad It's true that some are but that's not the point. It's the childhood memories we have that's associated with these games and the desire to play them again. When those games turn prohibitively expensive to get back you kick yourself for ever letting them go in the first place. Like many other collectors I'm trying to hunt down the games I had as a kid as well as expand my collection overall. Many of us realized that we would regret selling off our old games to get the new releases after some or even a lot of these games had already been lost to us. We realized replacing them would be an enormous and possibly expensive task. I personally stopped selling my games off during the PS1 era but others took a bit longer. Looking up these games now and seeing that they're more expensive than ever ( especially for systems like the Saturn) is a real kick to the gut. For a lot of us collecting is about re-experiencing childhood memories and even sharing these with our children. Not so we can say "Yeah, I got this $500 game sitting on my shelf at home."

Funnily enough, i sold my SNES with like 5 games to buy my saturn, used and pretty much at the end of it's lifetime. Everyone had a Playstation or an N64 back then, so i figured i could always play those with them, i wanted the console i couldn't play anywhere else. In the long run, i'm happy i did it, because obvious reasons. I bought Panzer Dragoon Saga on launch day and it still sits proudly on my shelf, and Panzer Dragoon Zwei even got played for the first time by my sister and her husband a few weeks back, and both were so hooked that they had to play it through.

Great video, and thank you for pointing out that quite a lot of these games simply don't justify their current asking cost. There is a total lack of rationality in current Saturn retro collecting prices. I was extremely fortunate to buy a Saturn back in the late 90s just as the system was on its way out, which provided me a great opportunity to buy many games at original MSRP (ex. Marvel Super Heroes, Street Fighter Collection) and others even at a hefty discount (House of the Dead for $20 in a clearance bin). I also managed to do some other collecting on eBay in the late 2000s before prices went through the roof. Honestly, channels like yours and especially "most expensive games / hidden gems" videos like this are a double-edged sword: thanks to you and other KZbinrs, gamers everywhere have finally come to realize how full of hidden, console-exclusive gems the Saturn library really was. The downside is that this same awareness triggered a bidding war from completionist game collectors with more money than good sense, and they have put these classics out of reach for the average gamer. I remain hopeful that maybe future digital releases of some of these games (Saturn Mini? Saturn game compliation for newer consoles?) might finally bring prices down and make collecting these possible for gamers of average means. In the meantime, thank you for shouting some sense into the heart of the whirlwind that "There is no good reason to pay $800 for Daytona USA: Netlink Edition!"

Thankfully i kept my Saturn and 95% of the games i had with it and everything i bought knew is still virtually mint, apart from Panzer Dragoon Saga which i picked up for £87.00 every other ive purchased has as a retro collector has been from Japan even buying some as back up copies for my PAL games as they are just so darn cheap.

My mom worked as a cell phone dealer (this was early 90s so it was a big deal then) in 2 different malls. One of her stores was right next to an "Electronics Boutique" the other was 3 stores down from a "Software ETC". Needless to say, when I'd have to go with her when she worked night shift, and stay as a kid I'd be in those stores and the arcades. I eventually pre-ordered a dreamcast in 1998 but I had the Saturn before. Marcus was the name of the manager at the Software ETC and he told me to wait a week and the Saturn games would be cheap. Well, they were. I got so many games for ~$100 (My lawn mowing money). I even had doubles of some titles. About a month after that, Marcus came into my mom's store with another one of his guys with a rolling cart and 2 big cardboard boxes. They were full of Saturn games. He asked me if I wanted them and to give him an offer. We left that day with all those games for $150. I had to borrow money from my mom. I guess they weren't selling even on closeout, so he just took what he could for them since they were already considered a loss. There was every rare game in there you could think of. I still have 10 sealed copies of PDS from that day. MKR, MMX4, MM8, etc... This story isn't a unique one either. These games aren't that rare. People just hoard them and mess with the "market".

Sonic Jam prices can vary all the time, I’ve seen it as low as $40 for just the disc and as high as $150 for complete in mint condition

The Japanese version sometimes goes for as little as 25$. And it's the exact same game.

Another key strategy for collectors is to be patient when scouring Ebay for finds. Every once in a while, you will find a rare title for a very low price that somehow gets ignored by bidders. I also recommend buying “disc only” titles, whoch may be notably cheaper. I bought a disc copy of Worldwide Soccer 98 for $10, while the boxed copy goes for $40. If you see a bargain like that, go for it. Finally, don’t forget that CD-R is an option, especially for super rare classics like Powerslave. Keep looking to collect your library, but don’t miss out on playing old videogames. This also applies to fan translations such as Shining Force 3 Trilogy, Policenauts and Sakura Wars.

Wow I bought that same version of Virtua Fighter Remix for $12 complete at a local retro store about 2 years back. Had no idea it jumped up in price.

I'm going to have to strongly disagree with the views on Frankenstein here. I think the game is very good and while adventure games like that are certainly not everyone's cup of tea, calling it a "bad game" is simply not true. Might be worth a deeper look to appreciate it sometime in the future.
@jakescartoons60453 жыл бұрын
Surprising that "Virtua Fighter: Remix" is $200 or more for a long box copy. I recently got a "not for resale" copy in a standard CD jewel case for only $40, and both the case and disc were in good condition. And before you ask, no. It wasn't the Japanese version. It was an American copy.

You're gunna wanna keep an eye on the Satiator Flash Card project and get yourself one of those when they finally come out. Dump a bunch of ROMs onto it, try a bunch of games, and then buy physical copies of the ones you actually like and enjoy.

I was very fortunate to get into the Saturn at an ideal time, when the import prices weren't insane, and the US retail market still had a lot left on the shelves if you knew where to dig. I've had or have most of what's on your list, and while I sold off some that I miss, I still consider my Saturn collection my favorite slice of gaming, despite being very into current gen stuff. Fun video!

Kinda surprised Deep Fear didn't make the last section. The PAL version (there isn't a US version) is bonkers expensive, but the cheap Japanese version has dialogue and most menus in English, so it's very playable.

Ive seen power slave many times. It looks like a game id love. It seems imaginative, and in that respect i feel as though it would remind me of how i felt playing games like timesplitters back in the day. I need to find out if my uncle still has his saturn... id buy that thing for whatever price he wants. Saturn was always cool as hell to me. Also, love the arcade music in between segments! Hit me in the nostalgia with altered beast and golden axe.

I love Powerslave! It is probably the only Saturn game in which the lighting effects are better than they are on the Playstation version. It was the first 3D shooter game that I remember playing in which you could look up and down.

I'm so glad that I own several of the titles mentioned. Mostly glad that I bought them new and never sold them. Saturn Bomberman, Working Designs Sega Ages, Street Fighter Zero 3, Super Tempo, and Blast Wind are just a few I bought new in the 90's and kept. I would not dream of paying the asking prices now.

Yes, please do a part 2 to this video. I really enjoyed it. I wasn't able to get a Saturn as a kid because it was so expensive ( lol, my father just laughed at me when he seen how much the Saturn cost) but my wife got me one a couple of years ago CIB no less for a great price and so finally I can experience this legendary library of games. I actually stumbled upon Sega Ages at my local retro game shop last year and got it along with Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2 all CIB and in mint condition for well under market. Sega Ages is the pride of my Saturn collection and a fantastic game but it is most definitely not worth spending $200 on. I picked up a replay ram card and I'm fixing to start importing since the PAL and Japanese versions are far more reasonable in price........mostly.
