If not for the 32x and the absurd Saturn launch & price it may have fared better. It had a library that eclipsed the N64 and a controller I prefered over the original PlayStation pad. Saturn deserved better than it got.

@@MrChadsimoneaux I'd say that the audience that Saturn was mostly oriented toward - could either get much more and much better elsewhere in gaming, or - would have to settle for some poorly made scraps. I remember that during my time with Saturn, - it was the system that established the ultimate truth, that newer system does not equal better system. Saturn, despite the fact that i did have fun with some of its titles, has indicated beyond any doubt, - that time has come do abandon ship and move to PC gaming. Especially with the rise of Emulators, ensuring that my Megadrive and MegaCD (and even the arcades!) are not going anywhere, and join the ride through the PC gaming just as if they were there since day one.

Outside of fighting games and having more than a single good RPG (Paper Mario) the Saturn library isn't close to being competitive to N64. Coming from someone who's favorite system ever was Dreamcast and prefers Genesis to SNES the Saturn lost that generation for a reason. Sega CD was already well established a d capable of 3300 polygons/sec and some very decent 3D graphics in M2 mode--much better than Mode 7 for SNES. Adding a standard SVP for $50, the combo could've lasted another 2-3 years, giving Daturm more time to develop a solid library.
@SomeOrangeCat
@SomeOrangeCat 4 жыл бұрын

@Dean Satan EXACTLY, thank you very much. As someone that owned both a Megadrive and Snes among others, I can't deny the Snes had some masterpieces like Demon's Crest and Castlevania IV. But when I put the catalog of both consoles side to side, the Megadrive wins both by appeal and average quality and in general Sega consoles granted me much more joy and forever favourite games. The commercial success of Nintendo is almost entirely based on marketing and a borderline Social engineering that created cultists that still fanatized to this day.
@albatross990

@Dean Satan Well that's pretty subjective and otherwise plain false. However, I will state that ultimately more fast paced action games were king on Mega Drive while for those who wanted slower paced methodical RPGs the SNES was a good option, aside from Japanese PCs, since it was backed by well known RPG studios. Not to say the Mega Drive didn't have good RPGs or say the SNES was completely lacking in good fast paced action.

One of the best things Sega did in our region (France) was to not discontinue the Master System, but to offer it as a cheaper alternative to the Mega Drive. Consoles were overpriced at that time... so few people had experience with them. Having a cheaper alternative with a slightly reduced version of their flagship franchise (Sonic) meant not only sold Master Systems, but Mega Drives as well, as people would aspire to own the real deal. They could even keep their old games as they upgraded from the budget to the flagship experience, thanks to the power base converter. Yes, the Master System (and the similarly priced Gameboy) finally caused the French market to open up for consoles, and I know of many people who love theirs to this day!

Honestly, an honorable mention would be hiring Tom Kalinske in general. Several other things Sega got right in my opinion was targeting maturing gamers with the release of the Genesis, and creating an environment that promoted creativity risk-taking in its first and third party developers (games such as Toejam and Earl, Road Rash, Decap Attack, Comix Zone, Mutant League Football/Hockey and Ecco the Dolphin to name a few, would likely never have seen the light of day on other consoles).

The return of the Japanese Saturn pad is a bit strange since it's still a Sega mistake and people still had those American pad. If Sega offered to exchange the old pad for the new, it would be a "thing that Sega got right" indeed. It's a bit too bad most of those things are marketing campaign related though. We could talk about the way Sega handled censorship which they definitely got right, the way they handled their arcade development. ( even if i still think this is why their marketing was "too much" concentrated on arcade which interested fewer and fewer people as times passes) You talked about the controller but didn't talked about how the Megadrive was the first one to take into consideration the shape of the hardware in order to not hurt the player hand... Those NES Controllers were spiky in comparison ! Sega also got the online right on Dreamcast since that's what would be implemented on Xbox, saving that legacy. There is a lot of things Sega got right compared to their competitor even outside of marketing campaigns which are.. Always hard to see if they were a real success or not. ( well, the commercials are the exception since they really defined the Megadrive success ) I mean, yeah, it sell consoles but if the company loses money in the process, maybe it's not a real success ? I prefer more concrete things that Sega got right. Even the way that Sega handled the Brazil market is something they got definitely right compared to Nintendo ! Even after Dreamcast's "death", Sega is really an exemple of buying other companies and, contrary to Microsoft, let them do what they do the best. Total War, Football Manager is really what made Sega bread and butter today and Atlus don't seems to be handicapped by the fact they are under Sega and Persona 5 was a very good success. Let's not even talk about the successful manner Sega handle their fans and how it leads to the excellent Sonic Mania. A success good enough to make everyone forget about Sonic Team's own failure. If THAT's not something Sega's done right compared to Nintendo, nothing else will be !
@SegaLordX

Sega gave a lot of creative freedom to their young employees back then (they needed to produce many games and fast, in order to make up for the stranglehold Nintendo had on third parties). Yu Suzuki was one of the beneficiaries of that company culture.

Regarding the Dreamcast's US release, it's also worth noting how well marketed it was. From the 9/9/99 date to the edgy MTV "it's thinking" ad campaign. It really nailed the Dreamcast as a cool, futuristic, modern, "edgy" system. For a brief moment, Sega was back at being relevant and appealing to the "cool kids" and Sony appeared almost naff. I was so mad at the bland european ads in contrast.

As much as I like Sega, many of their products like the SVP,a waste of a chip being used only once,typified their mistakes and bad business decisions. It's crazy that at one point they had 6 or 7 systems out at the same time. Their only success was with the Genesis and they didn't know how to handle it. Yes they were ahead of the curve with some things,like the Dreamcast's modem and releasing games like Phantasy Star Online,but a lot of the time they just played catch up to everyone else. The 6 button pad is nice but the 3 button pad didn't cut it in the first place. The entire company was just poorly run and has slowly lost relevance with each passing year. I still play Sega games,Fist of the Northstar and Yakuza games mostly, and have since their games were being released on Colecovision. But most people I know have no idea what Sega has even done for quite awhile now. My 14 year old cousin had no idea that they even existed until I showed him some games. Sadly their victories were just not enough to overcome their massive failures.

Here in the US the Master System was basically unheard of. I didn't even know that they existed until 32-bit systems were a thing. To this day I've never played one or even seen one in person, which is weird because I used to be quite the collector. I have come across Master System games for sale a bunch though. As far as the 16-bit wars go, I didn't choose one side over the other as they both had exclusive titles that were sweet. Overall I liked the Genesis more for some reason I can't put my finger on. The Saturn was a cool enough system but the problem was that everyone was jizzing about 3D games at that time and the PS1 simply had more horsepower, and eventually had a super solid lineup.

Although i like it now, The Master System was the only console I didn't like at its original run because the nes just had a far superior game library. But i always loved Sega's consoles over the others. Genesis over the Snes because of Sonic, Shinobi, Streets of rage, shmups and all other exclusives and better versions of the games that were also on the SNES. Saturn over the Ps1 (Although i did love the ps1) Because as a Arcade and SNK fan, The Saturn almost did a better job than the Neo Geo on bringing the arcade home with all the big title arcade games coming to the saturn such as Sega Rally, Virtua fighter, House of the dead, Virtua Cop and so on. And as a huge SNK and Capcom fan at the time, The saturn was the best way to have SNK games at home for a reasonable price. Even better that the Neo Geo CD because the saturn had better load times and a better controller. Also the Capcom and SNK fighters were to us at the time was arcade perfect. Dreamcast over ps2 and all the other consoles that came after it because it's my favourite console of all time. The Dreamcast did every thing the saturn did and more like Bringing home arcade games and arcade perfect SNK an Capcom fighters as well as having its own unique library of awesome games. I'm actually playing The Dreamcast now with the awesome Blue Stinger. I let my nephew play the Dreamcast for the first time and he thought it was awesome and couldn't believe it was a 20 year old console. He was amazed by the VMU memory card and how it interacts with the games. I showed him the Chao on the VMU from Sonic adventure and he loved it. Now he wants a Dreamcast for himself. TrueSinister Yes Nintendo's Monopoly over the gaming industry screwed Sega over good and proper. Sega had a system that beat the Nes in practically every department but couldn't compete because they had all the top 3rd party devs under contracts that prevented them from making games for anyone else and bribed the big chain stores with threats of breaking ties if they sold competing hardware and software. Just imagine all those top titles the Nes had being available on a Master System, Nintendo would have had to cut prices to compete!

D core Well its well known these practice's went on and were stopped in 1990 which is why Sega's consoles finally got games from the likes of Capcom, Konami, Tiato etc. When you look at the bigger picture it doesn't take an Einstein to work out what was going on.

TrueSinister I couldn't find any evidence of that but Weather that be the case or not, until Nintendo quit there dodgy licencing practices Sega were only able to aquire two 3rd party developers for the master system and Nintendo practically had ever other dev in their pocket. In todays world you would have to pay a developer to gain exclusivity like Nintendo had with 3rd party devs, they basically said "if you don't sign the licencing agreement, you dont make games for us"
