Another reason Yuzo Koshiro’s music was so epic in this series was because it borrowed heavily from electronic music that was so prevalent at the time. If you listen to groups such as Black Box, Inner City, and Technotronic you’d be hard pressed not to find similarities. All in all, my absolute favorite soundtracks of any game ever.

@Michael Bonavita Yeah don't forget Enigma MCMXCAD and Maxi Priest's ''Close To You'' which sounds alot like Streets Of Rage 1 & 2. Heck even the bonus Enigma MCMXCAD release back in 1991 had a special remix of ''Princibles Of Lust'' which had the Maxi Priest ''Close To You'' beat in it and Yuzo Koshiro borrowed heavy from that song especially when listening to SOR Level 4 music.

Man, I used to be the biggest Nintendo fanboy, but this is the game that won me over back then. There is just something so unabashedly... cool about some of SEGA’s titles. However, you, Sega Lord X, pushed me completely over the line to being a complete SEGA nut. Wouldn’t have gotten a Saturn, which is now one of my favorite consoles, if it weren’t for your glowing recommendation. I have not been as excited for a “new” (to me) game as I am whilst I wait for my Virtua Guns and HotD, Virtua Cop 1, and 2 to arrive from Japan. Thanks for being you, your passion for SEGA is pure as can be and absolutely contagious.

Nice timing, been playing this and 4 a lot recently. I think this is one of the best 16-bit games ever. I play it all the time and never get sick of it. It's just pure fun! Sexy graphics, deep gameplay for a beat em up, meaty sound effects, it's all there. But its crowning achievement is easily the music. This and Sonic 3 are the two games in my opinion that don't even sound like they come from the Genesis. Amazing understanding of the hardware and a crafty use of samples. One of the highest quality soundtracks of the era, and it comes from the plucky Genesis. Still impresses me to this day. I remember just assuming the 3rd one was the best when I was younger. I asked for it at a flea market stand and the guy said "all we have is the second one" and I thought eh what the hell. Later on I realized I really lucked out. Love this game

I must have have gone through that magazine hundreds of times, looking at the amazing photos over and over again, waiting in agony for the game to release. When it did, me and my friend would stay up all night playing it. Honestly one of my favorite games of all time, and my favorite Genesis game overall. Like x said, I was frustrated not seeing a sequel while owning both the Saturn, and the Dreamcast. Still we did get the awesome sor4 recently, and was so damn happy to hear yuzo working his magic again. Few games though can match the excellence of 2, even decades later in terms of gameplay, music, and graphics. Though many have tried, you just can't beat a classic

Fun fact: Yuzo Koshiro also wrote the original tracks for Ys I and Ys II. He also has credits for Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and Shenmue. It's amazing how much prolific work this made is responsible for. Also pretty neat that his sister is the lead game designer too! Small caveat, Streets of Rage 2 had another composer, Motohiro Kawashima, who worked on a few tracks entirely himself. It's worth noting too that Koshiro developed an MS-DOS program to make full use of the Yamaha FM synth chip. Incredible work that largely goes unrecognized.

I think the 16-megabit cartridge size was also partially in response to Street Fighter II on SNES (which was hyped for being the first 16-megabit home game). The Genesis didn't get SF2 until 1993 so Streets of Rage 2 having a similar size game was something for Sega to market during the 1992 holiday shopping season.

The GOAT game as far as I'm concerned. I've never played a game as steadily since day 1 as I have SOR2. Be it the original Genesis, an emulator, the iOS port, or the Mini Genesis, not a month goes by I don't play SOR2. The Genesis had something that Nintendon't, and that was a lot of really great co-op games. It was singlehandedly responsible for me and my sister getting along and not fighting or yelling at each other, and my mom considered the Genesis a worthwhile investment in her sanity at the time. SOR4 is great, but nothing will ever beat SOR2.

I'd also like to mention that Blaze was something of a pioneer character. I think at that time there were only a tiny handful of games that featured or offered a female character to play as (Metroid, SMB2, and the Golden Axe series are the ones that spring to mind). While her attacks didn't hit like Axel or Max, she was the best of both speed and power. No damsel in distress, she was a true badass and is still my favorite to play as.

That gave me chills. I can't recall many games in the 90s which were more antecipated that SoR2. The first images on magazines while in production still showed some different special moves - like Axel doing a Tiger Uppercut-like which ended up becoming his flaming uppercut. Even though this is the only installment in the series with no alternate endings, it is the most balanced yet and the soundtrack is unbelievable. I hope you give a take about SoR3 in the future as well. Great video!

Love this channel. Before I got a NES I was an Arcade kid out in the world on a BMX. Growing up in a working class poverty environment your lifestyle drew you to the Genesis when it came out. I respect the SNES completely, but back then it was a sheetrock walls, two story air conditioned thing. Us kids in the trailer parks and apartment complexs gravitated towards the stereo component system with the *bass.* It was the Heavy Metal/Hip hop *street* machine for us fist fighting kids smoking cigarettes before puberty and finding Penthouse magazines in the strip of woods between neighborhoods. Camouflage, Nunchucks and Butterfly knives; sweat pants for pajamas. I could always go visit a friend from school to check out ChronoTrigger.

This is one of my favorite games of all time and certainly the best brawler of the 16 bit era. I've still never beaten it on the highest difficulty setting (Very Hard) and I don't like to use save states, but I continue to replay it a few times every year hoping maybe someday, lol.

One thing I think many developers don't get is that one of the most important aspects of any beat em up is making it so that every single hit feels like it has impact. That means having the player be able to really feel each punch or kick land, and to do this you need the proper punch/kick sound effect. The sound effects when landing shots is one of the most important aspects of any game for that matter. It's one thing that makes games like Castlevania stand out, as there's a really nice feeling that comes with every single connection you make with the whip in that game. Each hit is accompanied by a satisfying thud sound effect and it's very satisfying. This game has the exact same thing, along with a split second freeze of the game action each time a hit lands. It's one thing this game did perfectly and is something many developers don't think about.

I was a Sega kid, but I'll be honest, I never liked SOR protagonists. It was a disappointing tendencies of the 90's in general, when you are playing beat'em-up controlling some "totally rad dude" or "strong-and-independent", looking at the enemies, thinking "THAT who I want to play!" A year or so ago, however, I played a rom, called "SoR2 Boss hack", where characters were replaced with 4... well... bosses. Played with Abadede for hours, for days! Beat it on the Hardest with no safe states. I wasn't a fan of SOR 2, but with a mod I could finally appreciate what was in that game, what hooked so many. So, I'd like to take a time to say sincere *Thank* *you* to a guy who made that roster change. I played some crappy hacks, that tried to do the same, so I can really appreciate the work you put in that, making it like if it was intended that way.

And this is the beautey of modding. Allowing the gaming experience to change so it can be appreciated in new ways. or to torture everyone who ever sees the cursed abominations that come from the depths of the sonic romhacking scene....

This was the great consolation prize of not having access to Street Fighter 2 that SNES got in 1992. I got SOR2 on day 1 for $70, and it was well worth it! I feel that this game actually surpasses the arcade Final Fight game from 1989. To this day, nothing has surpassed it in the genre. The techno goodness was insane, and nothing on SNES could compare, especially if you had a model 1 and listened to it with headphones!

I love how this game is set in a modern City, but still squeezed in both a Piraten ship Stage and an alien space ship Stage in a way that made narrative sense.

Street Of Rage 2 is perhaps the most revolutionary game ever. Gameplay 10, soundtrack 10. 50 years from now we will still be playing this game. Street of Rage 2 is like Dr Dre's album "The Chronic", it's like the movie "The Good The Bad and the Ugly". It is an interporal masterpiece. Thank you for these memories and for this review Sega Lord X!

Loved the fact that you included "Slow Moon" in the music section. So good! But the whole soundtrack is flawless anyway :) One thing that I'd add is how satisfy using a pipe is in this game. The physics, the sound... This game is just awesome.

Can't recall how many hours my mom and I played this game in the Past. Our record was setting it on the "maniac" difficulty using a special code and starting with only 3 lives. We did beat the game, but still couldn't beat it staying alive together, she kept on dying fighting Mister X. I played as Max and she took Skate. Maaaaan, those were awesome times...

great video... my only critique is that i wish more people knew the background info... like how Ancient was yuzo koshiro, his mom, sister and more and how his sister literally drew storyboard style the levels that we all now love ( and later made Beyond Oasis/ Story of Thor and tried to do a dreamcast streets of rage update)... or that yuzo worked with motohiro kawashima on that fantastic soundtrack using his own homemade outdated by then PC 8801 hardware based sound engine... aahhh... so much good shit... anyways great video

Great video as usual. I myself grew up with Streets of Rage 1. I got a Genesis CDX for Xmas and it was included on the Sega Classics disc. I believe Sor1 was the first game I ever beat actually. Unfortunately I didn't get to enjoy Sor2 until I was an adult. I have to admit it is pretty much perfect and a huge improvement over the first. I still prefer the music of the first game though.

I was a big gamer when I was a kid and sor2 was the game I played the most. I still remember how it plays perfectly. And once in awhile I go on KZbin and listen to the whole soundtrack with a little smile on my face while I remember all the memories. To me it is the game with the best soundtracks, it was ahead of its time and I liked all the tracks, it was constant.

SLX, once again you crush it with your reviews! SoR2 was such an amazing game and a game that got my sister into gaming! The visual upgrade and gameplay over the original still blows my mind. SoR3 was good but not the big step that 2 was. It has been fantastic to play SoR4 with my youngest and some SoR2 emulated with him. Good stuff, keep up the high quality content!

Streets of Rage was my favorite Sega Genesis game until Street of Rage 2 came along. The greatest beat em up, also with the greatest soundtrack ever on this system. Suddenly twenty five years later Streets of Rage 4 comes as my new favorite beat em up ever! What an amazing, fun and musical franchise! Thanks for your great video and those awesome memories of my childhood.

Japan from the early 90s is certainly something special. JPOP from that time is what Yuzo Koshiro and Masato Nakamura made happen on the Genesis. SoR is a game I go back to for the nostalgia factor of a very prosperous time in modern Japan. As well as for my own memories of the times I played it as a teen. For the fans of the soundtrack of the game, I suggest looking up Nakamura's band Dreams Come True.

Yuzo Koshiro's tracks were mostly influenced by western music. I'm not aware of any Japanese influences in his music. Nakamura is obviously a bit different since he was in the J pop industry himself.
