Episode Notes:

3. The PSP version is very playable, but suffers some performance issues.
4. The Xbox version of Outrun 2006 looks considerably better than the PS2 version.
5. Outrun Online Arcade was Xbox Live multiplayer capable, though you won't be able to use it today.
6. There have been upgraded cabinets released in the years since. Outrun 2 SP DX was released on the Linburgh, has increased resolution, a native widescreen mode, and a full sitdown Ferrari model.
7. It has been over a decade since this incredible game had its last official release at home(2009).
8. Yu Suzuki's last 2 games with AM2, were Outrun 2 and Virtua Cop 3. The latter has never seen a home console version.

Fantastic game. If only we could get a sequel in 2020 or even a new Hang-On game!!! Actually, they could just give us a Sega VR Arcade compilation or even just Space Harrier VR... I think theres a bit of bad blood between Yu Suzuki and Sega Japan, his final six years at the company, he went a bit Hideo Kojima and spent millions on projects that were cancelled or failed in test markets. His only "good" game at the end was Sega Race TV, which Sega pretend never existed, despite being a pretty fun game.

This game is nothing but a celebration of what I consider to be video games. Out Run 2 is without a doubt one of, if not the best arcade racers ever made and for me, it'll be that evergreen game that I'll keep going back to for the rest of my life. In my mind it's perfection.

The PC version of OutRun 2006 C2C has a file that enables bloom and lens flare placed in the wrong directory. To fix: 1) Go to "\Media\". 2) Copy "lens_flare_offset.bin". 3) Paste in "\Common\". Also, there is a community mod called Outrun 2 FXT that fixes some of the problems with the PC version. (The PC version runs great for me, fwiw, though I've only tested it on my Windows 7 installation.)

The original Xbox is awesome I have a Conkers Bad Fur skinned Day one and the Special Fluro green Halo edition in mint condition I got for $150 with a bunch of games. ;). The original blades is still my fave dashboard of any console.

Never knew Yu Suzuki was involved in making Out Run2! I had the honor of meeting him in person at a Sega Developers conference and he was gracious enough to take a picture with a young unknown game developer newbie at the time. He didn't seem so popular with his subordinates however, which didn't surprise me knowing how perfectionist he is.

If your a creator you know things change and times change, there has been a lot of updates to the rules of gaming and to be successful you have to adhere to the ones that matter . You cannot be stuck in your ways and expect to turn huge profits and please this generation. To be stuck in your ways you have to update,upgrade and revise it to fit a. New era ..! That is so he and success and profits and continuity and longevity: Which I think everybody wants. Right now .! No one care for animations that are stuck mid transition and operate like a forklift .. u have to upgrade that .! Make them faster ,more seamless, have transitional animations . Nobody want a game where you can’t jump at the press of a button. Just little things . U have to go deeper in your story telling. You can’t just use the same techniques from before . Go to point A collect items go to point B plaice item get two paragraphs of some shinning force type dialogue . 🤦🏾‍♂️. Games has surpassed movies as an entertainment medium and people are not trying to turn back .

@@SuperKillerdreams cool, yea it's on the US Saturn also with AfterBurner and Space Harrier, but very expensive today. Also, I hear for Saturn you can use the 3D pad for analog control just like Xbox. Pretty cool. The Japanse Saturn seems the best since it has some extra remixed music to choose and a hidden 60fps mode to experiment with.

OutRun 2 and OutRun 2006 badly need a remaster on current consoles and PC. Neither of these games are even backwards compatible on the Xbox One or Series X. Though they were on the 360.

I have outrun 2 running on teknoparrot emulator for my racing cabinet in my man cave. It is the most played of all the racing games I have on that pc. The game is just so damn fun with a wheel/pedal with force feed back.

I would honestly take a GTA approach where you are not using actual licensed cars but inspired copies of those cars. That or make an Outrun 3 using Outrunners car selection style, again inspired copies of actual cars.

Ferrari should let Sega rerelease these games, as its free promotion. I dont think Fast and The Furious would of been made or at least wouldnt of been as popular if it wasnt for Gran Turismo introducing North America and Europe to all the Pacific Muscle cars that were featured in that movie. Im talking the Supra, Skyline GTR, 300z, Rx-7 and the almighty 3000GT VR-4. Lots of people around my age (older millennials) will tell you thats how they found out about many of these cars. Im just saying that having real car models in games will pay off. I know it wont be the same rereleasing a 20 year old game as it was with the blockbuster title that the first 2 Gran Turismos were, but still.

I think the only way you'll get a current gen re-release (or, for that matter, an OutRun 3) would be if a console manufacturer like Microsoft (via Turn 10, which has the master Ferrari license for XBox) footed the bill for Ferrari since that license is expensive, probably in exchange for being a console exclusive. Sega and Mattel (for both Hot Wheels and Matchbox) are two companies I wish would get their Ferrari licenses back.

Man I miss Sega of the 80's, and 90's. They were unbeatable when it came to technology and innovation, then the PlayStation ruined everything! Till this day, I've never owned a PlayStation, and never will. But when this game was an Xbox exclusive, not only was I happy, the PlayStation 2 couldn't compete with the capabilities of the Xbox.

I still remember the first time I saw OR2 in a movie theater arcade in January 2004 and it blew me away. I remember reading that a proper sequel was in the works a year or two before, so I was subconsciously awaiting the game to come out. Quickly learning of its arcade hardware and already owning an original Xbox, I was very excited to get my hands on the console release when it first came out.

I recently played the original Outrun 2 at my local arcade. Playing this game on original hardware is captivating. For 5 minutes you are completely focused on outrunning the clock, and getting to the finish line. Nothing else exists. SEGA truly put out some of the best arcade games ever made.

I like how most of the billboards are Scuderia Ferrari F1 sponsors in 2004 (Shell, AMD, Bridgestone, Vodafone). I'm sure that was part of the Ferrari license.

The best memory I have of this game was at a field trip to a bowling alley, when I finally made it to the finish line with a AA rank in Heart Attack mode. If I remember correctly there was a whole crowd of other kids behind me watching, as no one ever crossed the finish line. I walked out of that arcade room with my head held high, feeling like the king of the road. I almost didn't want to go back to bowling!

This game was the star in one of my city's last arcade places. It had the full cabinet version for single player at it became so popular that the owners also adquired the two player version. I only could play twice because it was always occupied. It was late but Sega finally included extra content in an arcade conversion.

Damn, I didn't know there was a 360 version available. I missed out on that. But, I do have several modded Xbox systems with full libraries on them. My friends and I usually just system link Halo and other FPS's. This game is going to be played in our next session. They just don't know it yet.

i had the same story as u Sega lord, but it was with Outrun in the arcade.....Outrun 2 i tried at a friend's house but didn't really like it, then outrun coast to coast or maybe 2006 came out on ps2, and i found it for cheap, took it home, sat on my chair, plugged in my new Yamaha headphones and played it, i was mesmerized for hours, it was the most insane rush i ever had ,

This is probably my most played racing game over the years, and the PSP version is still top shelf even today. I run it on my Vita in current times for proper analog controls, as that nub on the PSP sucked major donkey balls. LOL I was just playing this yesterday afternoon as a matter of fact, as it's one of the best playing racing games of all time, and hands down one of the best looking.

The reason sega doesn’t do more ports is because there aren’t enough fans. In America out of all the sega ages line of games the most bought one is sonic while in japan it was virtual racer. With America being one of the biggest gaming markets in the world it’s only logical for sega to keep feeding us what we’ve shown them we want (metaphorically speaking). One of the problems with segas games is they draw you in with the license and hook you with gameplay, I cost sega a lot of initial investment into licenses to get people interested; back in the arcade days that would’ve been fine with how much money it made but with how niche this stuff is it just isn’t super viable. Sega’s might came from the arcades and a lot of arcade games just don’t hold people the way they used to. I show my friends Daytona and sega rally and to them they look like any other racing game, i show them great shmups and they say “so this is basically galaga?”. People just don’t get it many of segas great game requires a lot of practice/ trial and error and today’s patience deficient populace doesn’t really have it in them to invest in that style of game. Unfortunately sega probably won’t continue the sega ages line and will also never port many of their classic games.

I loved games like this back in the day, from the sprite scaler type, to PS1's Ridge Racer... It was all about fun... I couldnt get on with Gran Turismo type games when they became a thing, too stale, I could see why people liked "Real driving simulators", but, that wasnt for me... I just wanted to go round hairpin bends sideways at full pelt! :D hehehe

great video. i have Outrun 2 on xbox and play it on a 360. have you played the other sumo digital racing games like the Sega All-Stars racing series. i feel like they built off the outrun 2 engine and they feel really nice to play. i know it's no replacement for outrun but at least there were a few games in that series

@@alex.starostin We all now the reality of the situation, considering how well the DC handled games like Crazy Taxi, F355 Challenge and MSR I always wonder if a DC version could have been made. Right before Outrun 2 came out in the arcades, Sega had released a 3D Outrun remake on the PS2 under the Sega Ages/3D Ages line. I own the Xbox Original Outrun 2 and the PSP Outrun 2 Coast to Coast. Both are great games. I regret not getting the Xbox 360 online version when I had the chance. Outrun has a special place in my heart. I remember playing the original arcade Outrun as a young teen, a few years before I got my driver's license.

There is still an "Xbox Live" for the OG Xbox, but like the Dreamcast, you have to go through some networking hoops in order to access it from a private server. At least that's what I recall.

The biggest tragedy is the fact the best version of the game was digital only and got pulled. The fact Sega hasn't found a way to put it back up yet shows they don't know what they're doing.

It's the Ferrari license. Sega had it for a while and once it expired they couldn't sell the game in its original form anymore. For example the recent releases of Outrun on the Switch and 3DS has the main car completely redesigned. Even earlier, Sega held the arcade license for Ferrari games when they made F355 Ferrari Challenge, because they didn't have the U.S. home license Acclaim (who did have it) published the home version for Dreamcast.

I bought the Xbox version for £8 in CeX just after it was delisted digitally, and I've backed it up to my PC to emulate in 1440P 60fps to play it in all its glory. Outrun deserves the best, arguably in my top 5 games of all time.

This game is the best case example for why we need OG Xbox emulation to finally step up. The PC version is missing graphical effects and is unstable, and every version is downgraded in some way compared to the OG Xbox versions. The PS360 version weren't good enough either, considering they only had half of the tracks that C2C offered.

The PC version has the bloom effect file placed in the wrong folder. There are instructions (even in the comment here) on where this one file has to go. And it runs very well on modern PCs, 4K 60+ fps is not an issue, this game has a very robust engine.

My favorite arcade racer of all time. Spent over 500 credits (I was so obsessed with the game I actually kept account! Time Attack never felt more right than in this game, and I absolutely loved time attacking Daytona USA and Scud Race for sure, too!) on it in a nearby arcade and bought a steering wheel for the OG Xbox just for this and was ripping up the leaderboards for a while. Good times. Good times indeed.

This was my favourite arcade style racing game of all time on console. Well it’s a tie between the SATURN port of SEGA RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP & Outrun 2. I wish I hadn’t sold my OG X Box version of this game for peanuts a few years back. I’m going to have to buy another copy sometime soon.

Ugh, that move to braindead powersliding is what killed the Ridge Racer franchise too. Seeing this generation of games is bittersweet, I can never look at this or Orta or VF4 and not think they should've been Dreamcast tentpoles. It's like watching Sega betray themselves.

Ridge Racer was originally about the sliding around the corners, it is later when Gran Turismo came out that Ridge Racer mixed it up a bit. Honestly they were likely trying to capture the drift driving culture that popped up in Japan. Dayton U.S.A. had some drifting going on, but not near to the extent that Ridge Racer did. I hear you an the DC front, I always wonder if Outrun 2 would have been capable on the DC.

@@lazarushernandez5827 For sure, the thing with Ridge Racer is that while they weren't as demanding in this regard as Daytona, the earlier games still made you consider the speed & angle you were entering a corner at. By RR 6 & 7 were just kinda locking you in place like a slot car when you slid through a corner unless you seriously messed up the entry.

As an original Xbox owner, I'm glad Sega focused on that console for some time. Shenmue 2, Jet Set Radio, Outrun 2 and other great games. I loved all of them

@@mickeman3967 Yep, the tiitle of the track is 'Last Wave'. Look up the SST Band for awesome live versions of Outrun and other Sega game music.

this plays like the original out-run should play (not really^^) i simply love it and i played it ALOT - that's for sure :D I do play the sequel "OR2-Coast2Coast" to this day - regulary its one of the greatest Sega Racer Ever! :)

Outrun 2 just gets better with age - found it on my PSP after many years of it gathering dust, it’s simply superb and FUN something so often overlooked in modern game design now

@5:30 if you play this on xbox360, set the console to 480p output and the cars won't be squished looking and the HUD will be normal too

Awesome game! I have 2 system-linked Xboxes, 2 copies of Outrun2 and 2 wheels/pedals. Even though it's only 480p, 720p TVs are so cheap now, so I'm picking up 2 matching ones soon. This still looks great in 480p, so I don't mind that there's no modern port.

Love this game, my only complaint and a small one is that red colours seem to bleed even with a good cable. It be nice to know if anyone else sees this when playing?

Great video, thanks! I play Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast often on my Xbox. Looks good with Retrotink 5X on a 4K TV. I do hope for a modern release, too.

It’s a shame OutRun Coast 2 Coast runs like garbage on PCSX2 (making seriously excessive hardware demands with major dips in performance) because my PS2 died and I was hoping to keep playing it via emulation. Fortunately, the severely hamstrung PSP version runs decently on modest hardware.

I knew about Outrun 2 and Outrun 2006, but never got to play them until recently, and damn are they good games! I don't care if I can't play the games in HD, they still look great, and makes it worth going back to the old consoles for.

SEGA had their Ferrari license expire... Then with After Burner Climax, their contract with Northrop Grumman (or whoever) expired so they couldn't feature their jets in THAT game. And I bought a PS3 for TLOU and MGR:R... By the time I remembered ABC was on that console (several months later) it had already been taken down from the PS Store. How I hate myself for not thinking to get that when I could've. But at least I have this game 'OutRun 2006 Coast to Coast' on PS2.

Well whenever i play a Yakuza game i wonder just why the club Sega only has the original Outrun, but since they no longer have the Ferrari license it makes sense, that´s why the car´s sprite was modified to no longer resemble the 512 tr.

Please re Anounce the original arcade version of Virtua racing is on Nintendo switch with online multiplayer. Im in a emptey lobby😣. Same with Daytona USA on xbox1. We need a Sega online race day since were all in for SEGA here. Maybe? + virtua racing uses gyro optional for steering . If it miss reads just simply click your steering analog to recenter if you lose orientation. A lot of games dont have a manual retrac if your steering leans off course. Theres even a replay mode in virtua racing which i never knew existed in the original game code. SEGA!!!😃

It's q shame this game is not enhanced for the Xbox One X/Series X. Imagine playing this in 4K like other original Xbox games like Conker and Panzer Dragoon. I managed to get a sealed copy on ebay for 99 cents about 5 years ago, I was so happy :)

I have both OGXB games and still have Outrun Online for XBLA on my 360. Still plays obviously without anyone else!! Without Ferrari I don’t think this is coming back....
