Episode Notes:
1. Captured from the Mega SG. Super NT for the SNES comparison.
2. Sunsoft also published Aero 2 right at this game's release.
3. The last area is the factory, a series of really difficult obstacles and enemies that do multiple points of damage. I needed save states to get through them and preserve my sanity.
4. Sunsoft also published the massive disappointment, Blaster Master 2.
5. I was not a fan of the vehicle based stages in this title. They are short but cheap as hell.
6. It was pointed out that the story in Zero takes place after Aero 2. I went back to verify and it seems that is correct. The ending of Aero 2 directly references the events that start Zero here.

@zerocal76 yep & the best $3 he ever spent was a copy of Stadium Events on NES. It's just the cart no box but still I kept it & it's now in my safe. He got it at the same Flea market, which was a local one & there was this old couple that somehow (I think 5 finger discount to this day) had the newest games for dirt cheap. Only other deals that are worth $$ these days is Metal Storm for $4, Mario RPG & Earthbound for $15 each

The 16 bit mascot platformer craze was so long ago and none of us thought 30 years later that mascot platformers would be dead and the craze would be stuff like free-to-play battle royale games and online multiplayer shooters. Makes you think what the craze will be 30 years from now.

I love this game, and lots of Sega ports of games on SNES have the benefit of better screen resolution/more real estate. You can see more of the playfield, where the SNES version feels slightly zoomed in. It's worse in some games more than others, but I usually prefer to see more of the screen. Even though I grew up with NES/SNES.

It's one thing to be an also-ran among mascot platformers during the SNES vs. Genesis days, it's another to be an also-ran among mascot platformers in 1994 specifically with releases like the Sparkster games, Earthworm Jim (for better or worse), Donkey Kong Country, and Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) the same year, and legendary mascot platforming powerhouses like Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong Country 2 coming in the next calendar year. That's not even including high-profile action-platformers released in 1994 that _weren't_ mascot-driven like Castlevania: Bloodlines and Contra: Hard Corps. Zero basically needed a miracle at the time to stand out positively among action-platforming games back then, and neither Sunsoft nor Iguana (either as Iguana or as Acclaim) was the company to make that happen.

I watched this video last night but didn't have time to leave a comment on it as I came home late from work yesterday and had to do the grocery shopping. I ended up downloading the video on a USB stick and watching it upstairs on the smart TV before bed. I'm so glad you didn't say anything negative about ''Lemmings'' when it was briefly mentioned at the beginning as that is one of my most favourite games on this console. On Zero I was never able to pass the cliffs stage of this game as I couldn't figure out what to do or how to get up so I ended up giving up. It's not a really bad platformer by any stretch but it's also nothing special and aside from the graphics, there's no other redeeming qualities of this title me thinks. I love these single Mega Drive game reviews you make SLX and look forward to more in future.

The problem with the music is simply that it’s far too serious for a game like this. It needed light-hearted music like that in Dynamite Headdy, Rolo to the Rescue, Quackshot, Castle/World of Illusion… IMHO. It’s not bad music per se, just inappropriate to the theme.

I remember being really interestes in this game when I read the reviews solely because Zero was described as having throwing stars and nunchucks, because I am a diehard TMNT guy and this sounded ninja-esque... but I never even downloaded it via emulation once I got into that, so I feel like this game didn't even have enough charm to hook me when I could get it for free. BUT on the other hand retro reviews like this one often talks about how the gameplay concept is pretty unique so maybe I should try and play it anyway I can one of these days, since I have a feeling this mascot (and possibly also Aero) will most likely stay under the radar and not receive any big retro-re releases.

Funny you should say how the music in the Genesis version is mid and forgettable because with the SNES version, it's an entirely different story. Seriously, with the instruments chosen in the SNES version, these tunes are anything but forgettable. They flat out ROCK. Especially if you are in to that early 90s feel, which Aero 2's soundtrack has on the SNES version as well. As a matter of fact, the beginning beach level sounds quite similar to My World Storm by Gary Numan. All in all a very good review. It's nice to hear one of Dave Siller's classics given its props.

GEMS gets a lot of hate, some of it undeserved. A lot of it is just plain average and I suspect the main complaint is that it does nothing with the hardware. I can imagine a video on it might not be the most popular, though if you showed a good example, followed by one average and one bad, repeatedly, it might hold some interest. Games like Comix Zone, Warriors of the Eternal Sun, and pretty much anything Disney/Westwood/Shiny/Novotrade (custom GEMS?) prop GEMS up a bit. 9:51 I started thinking what it'd be like to have Silver/Mecha Sonic from Sonic 2 (8-bit) or Tails Doll from Sonic R in their own titles, and I imagine that one of these would be nightmare fuel... I don't think I need to say which.

I wasn't a huge fan of the Aero games, though I like Aero 2 much more than the first, so I decided to skip this title when it came out. Besides, why would a squirrel have better air mastery than an actual flying animal?? Anyway, I never read the reviews, so I had no idea how well it was received. It looks great visually, but Sega Lord is right when he stated the music doesn't fit any of the stages, and not one track is a standout. Don't blame GEMS; some good tunes have been created using GEMS. I just think most of the memory went toward the impressive graphics and game mechanics, and little was left for music.

Good review! I borrowed the Genesis version of this game from a friend when I was a kid and then eventually bought my own copy many years later. I did complete it eventually, but it just felt mediocre all the way through. The game just feels bland and forgettable. Granted, it is better than Bubsy (a low bar, indeed). The controls and hit detection were finicky which made later levels just a test in patience. The level design and enemy placement also felt really cheap at times. In some places it feels impossible not to get hit or die if you haven't memorized the level already. The game just is nothing really special, to be honest, especially when there are a wealth of much better platforming/action games on the Genesis (and on the SNES). It is worth a play as a curiosity, but you won't be missing much if you skip it.

Hypersensitive culture is one way to put it LOL. Considering that a lot of people in the west are unfamiliar with the significance of the rising sun symbol, let’s just change his name to Zero the Blitzkreig Squirrel and change his bandana symbol into a Nazi swastika. That’s the parallel. Looks like a fun game though
@SegaLordX
@SegaLordX 7 ай бұрын
Indeed, but this is essentially a redemption arc in a larger story. Zero is a bad guy(which is no doubt why he is wearing the headband in the first place) in Aero 1, and finally sees Edgar Ektor for the evil bastard he is in this one. A slightly expanded ending could see Zero abandon the rising sun and embrace his newfound heroism.

@@SegaLordXThat’s an interesting concept! I actually wonder how deep the devs thought about the design. It almost feels like the American devs based him on the already popular 80’s/90’s trope of an edgy Japanese ninja-esque/martial artist character, and just used various references including that rising sun symbol (which does really look like just an expansion of the Japan flag) unknowingly or maybe ignorantly. And considering it never saw release beyond NA and EU, it flew under most radars. Still green-lit by Sunsoft since Japan largely underplays WWII era stuff unfortunately. Unrelated, love your content! Cool to see all these deep cuts.

@@Gatorade69 That's true but, i would like to see more big name publishers, trying to make a 2D plattformer game.

@@Gaming_since_the_eighties Yeah fair enough. Only new AAA platformer I can think of is Super Mario Wonder. Though I have enjoyed many of the indie platformers I have played.

With Sunsoft back from the dead and doing things nowadays, wonder what are the chances of this and the 2 acrobat games getting re-released today 🤔 Work with limited run games and get it done with the engine that modern vintage gamer has with them for old game collections 😮

There was a time before Covid you could get this game CIB for a reasonable price still. Then 2020 hit and the retro gaming market still hasn’t recovered for the buyer unfortunately!

Never got to play this. But did play Aero the Acrobat and loved it. Never beat it though. Its a shame most retro games are not on a digital platform.

I've played this on various emulator machines over the past few years and, yeah, I have never stuck with it and found it a bit awkward thanks to never getting used to the air control. I thought the dive bomb was gimmicky, and didn't even really know you could just use it to do quick little swoops - almost like Mario's cape in Mario World, judging by your footage here. Glad to hear I'm not crazy and found it harder than it probably is _because_ of my not sticking with it, but now that I know how to approach it, I think I'll give it another shot!

Controls: A - Shuriken. Holding up or down will also make Zero throw them at an angle. B - Jump B in the air - double jump. Also works as an attack. Holding down, then B - nunchucks Quarter circle forward + B in the air - quick swoop. Can be used as an attack. Holding C while standing - binoculars. Use the D-pad to look around. Running then holding C - long jumps forward. Each successive jump will be longer. C in the air - dive bomb. Also counts as an attack. C during a dive bomb - swoop to the side. Use D-pad to determine which side to swoop to. IIRC, doesn't count as an attack. C during a side swoop - swoop upwards. IIRC, also doesn't work as an attack.

Likely its use of the RIsing Sun headband and the kamikaze in the title. Nothing else here warrants it.

This is a cool game to have in a collection because it's extremely rare. Strong enough pedigree to be a very expensive genesis CIB especially in good condition considering that a large portion of copies produced went to rentals. ... That being said, if LRG is putting this game out again.. lol! Don't waste your money.
