Episode Notes:
1. Captured from the Mega SG(Gameplay). Music from real hardware.
2. I broke my leg the summer Part 1 was released. Having it at the time was a godsend for my mental health.
3. Street of Rage 2 was released on a 16 megabit cartridge, four times the size of the original.
4. Streets of Rage 3 was released on a 24 megabit cartridge.
5. After the mainline Genesis releases, a new Streets of Rage never appeared on Saturn or Dreamcast.
6. Adam will always be my favorite in Part 1. His absence in 2 and 3 was criminal.
7. 5 companies made Streets of Rage 2:
Sega CS
Ancient
H.I.C.
Shout! Designworks
MNM Software
8. Yuzo was certainly the lead on part 2, but a couple others contributed heavily to the sound.
Music Composition: Yuzo Koshiro, Motohiro Kawashima
Sound Effect: Yuzo Koshiro
Sound Driver: Takeshi Maruyama
9. The European version of part 2 allows you to pick the same fighters in co-op using a code.
10. There are a few differences between regions in part 2. Some mild censorship is there for instance. Mr X smokes a cigar in the Japanese version, and you can see Blaze's underwear during her attacks.
11. There was a pack in of part 2 with the Sega Genesis called the "Fighting System" briefly. It's quite rare today to find it complete.
12. As far as I know, the PAL releases of part 3 had all the same changes as the US version.
13. I always believed that Sega should have done a special Sega CD or 32X edition of these as well. It was such a missed opportunity.
14. Max is missing from part 3 entirely.
15. The Japanese version of part 3 has more difficulty settings open by default. There is a Very Hard mode that is quite nasty.

Streets of Rage 2 is a MASTERPIECE. In my opinion, it's the greatest beat-em-up ever made on console or arcade. I've been playing it for 32 years and it NEVER gets old. The graphics, music, mechanics, etc. It's perfection. 🕹

@@mjorge0alves I enjoy lots of Capcom beat 'em ups, especially Cadillacs & Dinosaurs and The Punisher. They're great games. Having a preference or favorite doesn't make one a "fanboy." The mechanics and combos in Streets of Rage 2 make it infinitely replayable for me whereas something like Final Fight gets boring to me quickly. Go argue with someone else and stop being a pest.

@@Chaz4543 I'd put Turtles as an incredibly close second. I enjoy SoR 2 more though because of the amount of moves each character has, and the fact that they all feel so different. The soundtracks are neck and neck, though. Hard to pick a favorite there.

@Chaz4543 Most Snes beat em ups only had a measly 3 enemies on screen at once. Games like Turtles in Time thankfully had 4. 3 enemies isn't enough, especially in 2 player. Streets of Rage 3 (BK3 to be exact) has always been my favorite as a kid because it was edgier, and added plenty of great gameplay features like running, dodging and the super gauge, so discovering the Internet and the absolute disdain people had for SoR3 and the out-of-this-world praise for SoR2 has always been heartbreaking and very puzzling to me
@kingbeef5076
@kingbeef5076 8 ай бұрын
I know exactly how you feel. Technically Streets of Rage 3 is a better game because the movement options and ability to use specials without your life draining means that a skilled player can get through anything without taking a hit. A lot less people played 3 and I think many people have a bad habit of having very strong opinions on something they’ve never experienced. Sonic has the same issue with 3&Knuckles being much improved on 2 but still 2 is lauded as the best Sonic game because it was played by way more people.

Really ? I guess the music is polarizing then. Must be the grungier and organic feel it has. I've always enjoyed it and listening to it on a nice sound system or a makes it sound even better with the heavy bases and fluid hights. Idk. To make a paralel with a recent soundtrack I've been listening to. Take the album Art pop from Lady Gaga. The beat and melodies have a similar organic feel which i enjoy a lot. I find id sad that few people can appreciate it.

I share the same feeling, pal. The cult to SoR 2 is somewhat nonsensical when you take it to an analytical level. The only excuse players find to tarnish the game is the peculiar soundtrack ( which I myself find amazing), making it the "ugly duck" of the original trilogy. Superior graphics work, gameplay and everything else compared to the previous titles. SoR 3 is the real masterpiece.

Streets of Rage is one of the best Beat 'em ups series ever. SoR 2 is considered by many the best game on the Megadrive/Genesis. And Streets of Rage Remake 5.x is one of the best fan love letters ever made too. SEGA should have worked out legally and commercially to make it official while still protecting their I.P. and rewarding the devs. I still play SoRR regularly and it is an excellent "trilogy pack" all-around. The music? What to add about that masterpiece of OST that allows live shows, remixes and is present in lots of fans' playlists even today (I'm one of them, of course). Shout out to those absolute kings who made Streets of Rage: Remake. It is easily the best way to play these classic games and tweak them to play _exactly_ how you like. If that had come out back in '95, we would've collectively, to a man, exploded.

I remember the first I played the first SoR game. I was in 6th grade, my best friend was staying over and brought his Genesis. We rented SoR, then our jaws *dropped* in amazement. We loved hip hop and house, the game sounded like our world. That first flip over into the suplex, it was easily the fucking coolest game ever.

Talk about timing! Even though I bought SoR4 long ago I decided to install it just yesterday, and I was looking for videos about the original trilogy. I don't have the courage to get SoR3 for my Mega Drive, but I gladly play a translated BK3 on my Raspberry Pi :)

These games were incredible! There were some great beat-em-ups during the 16-bit era and the Streets of Rage trilogy still stood out as some of the best! I always had hoped that Sega would have made a special arcade Streets of Rage similar in scope to Revenge of Death Adder! Though, we did at least get Streets of Rage 4, which was incredible!

SOR2 is the best of all 3. It set the precedent for everything about this series moving forward, and I have them all. Even SOR4 is tightly crafted based on SOR2...just more characters. And the SOR CD version is hyper!!!! The soundtrack is out of this world for that one. Man I miss that giant beast of a machine. Sega Genesis, 32X and Sega CD. lol....

Such an amazing series -- I spent so many hours playing it with my siblings. Might have mentioned it on the original video, but Koshiro didn't do all the music on SoR 3, but even the songs he did were a little further out than the earlier stuff.

I started playing Streets of Rage right from the very beginning. Both one and two were the stuff dreams are made of. The thing that puts SOR above all others is how the enemies react to the player and the ability to use crowd control. When you get in the zone while playing SOR1-SOR2, it's as if fights seem to flow into each other in a never-ending battle. It is incredible. Addendum- I know everyone praises SOR 2 all day long (including myself), but I feel like Sega dropped the ball a little when making the second game. What they should have done was allowed you to unlock Adam as a playable fighter. Even if they just gave him his SOR1 move set and it didn't make sense story wise. That would have been a chef's kiss. *Edit- I didn't know you were going to cover Adam in the video. Even though my favorite will always be Axel, Adam is a close second.

Good work on this! It's all too easy to get sucked into talking about how much better SoR2 or SoR4 are. I love this game on it's own and totally agree it shouldn't be overlooked! The music from this whole franchise is firmly nestled in my playlist. Phenomenal composing all around!

I would say the example of Adam is the perfect example to show how people like good characters no matter the color.. I think 90% of people who played SoR were sad and frustrated to not be able to play Adam in the sequel because he was just that cool. I had no main character as a kid, I would play Adam and Axel equally, (blaze a little bit less because she was a girl but then as a teenager she grew on me as she was fast and I ended up loving her too, now I'd rather play her if I play SoR1) So, Hollywood execs and journalists, Netfilx producers, video game producers, just give us good characters and we will watch or play what you offer. If you force a bad cynical character we won't like it, SoR solved this puzzle 30 years ago already

Yup, I was just thinking about that today. Adam was my favourite character in SOR1, and Blaze in SOR2. Yet I'm a straight white male... That whole representation bullsh*t Hollywood has been pushing for years is total nonsense that is damaging pop culture and the entertainment industry. Fortunately, more and more people are waking up and pushing back.
