I might have to try it now, though. It looks pretty fun!
@duffman183 жыл бұрын
Definitely give it a go on an emulator. It's not amazing, but it's very decent. It's more an audiovisual treat than a gameplay one. Also check out the sequel Tempo Jr on the game gear. It's easier to emulate the game gear than the 32x. Also there's another sequel called Super Tempo, for the Sega saturn. But the saturn is notoriously difficult to emulate, so you can give it a go, but it may not work properly. You might need to actually own a Saturn and a copy of the game. However, it's relatively easy to burn.. ahem... "backups" of Sega saturns onto a CD using a regular CD burner, and play that "backup" disk on the saturn. Of course, to legally make "backups" of Sega saturn games, you must own an actual copy of the game already, but no need to worry about that...

Metalhead? Kolibri? What really will happen is that Sega will say they have a huge announcement. It will be digital re-releases for PS5 and Xbox Series of Sonic 1 & 2, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and freaking Columns. That's what we all want. More ways to play the Genesis version of Columns.

@9:45 Tempo's "ducking kick" is actually the highest scoring single attack he has. It took me a few playthroughs to realize how nuanced the game's scoring system is. Far from ideal, but the game doesn't so much reward you for how well you play, but for knowing the spots where you can net loads of points, maximizing them, and (sometimes) dying intentionally to repeat it. It's worth mentioning this game's multi-tiered endings, all activated by score. The best endings require an insane amount of points, which some players have deemed impossible... likely the result of a last minute edit to the game to increase challenge and replay value without adjusting the default enemy totals, but I can confirm the top tier endings are achievable without cheats, even if the grinding involved won't make it worthwhile to many players. Building up enough bonus tokens in order to replay and perfect the bonus stages are also essential to great scores... I found the Karate rhythm game was the most efficient. For years, I had read about this game being stylish but without substance, but I finally snagged a copy earlier this year and I was surprised to find myself replaying it for about two weeks. I ended up appreciating what it does well so much (mostly the characters endear themselves to me), that I can overlook its faults. I even took the plunge and bought a Saturn copy of Super Tempo, and that one truly is work of art.
@SegaLordX3 жыл бұрын
As far as I could tell the “endings” were just different picture prizes based on the score. Not really a compelling reason to replay to most folks.

@@SegaLordX I will say the best ending is interesting. Tempo and Katy end up married (I guess?), home owners, and are shown to have great success building up a big family of their own. The fact that they had the mega/ Sega CD and the 32X and that both essentially failed equally is really incredible. And of course both those failures led among other things to have consumer trust lost on Sega that would lead to the domination of PlayStation and the absolute collapse of the Saturn in the US and everywhere else outside of Japan. Sadly neither add-on was really what Sega needed or was really thought out or well fleshed down as a product.

Every 2D platformer back in the mid 90's always seemed to have pre-rendered graphics and they really didn't age too well in most cases. Good review. I have this game in my collection. I had no idea it was worth that much these days, as I got it out of a bargain bin back in the day. Don't think I paid more than $15 for it NIB. These days I usually play it via emulation because I don't like having all those wires around my Genesis.

"It's Tempo, and check it out you know, he makes it funky, and he's good to go..." It was at this point back in the day that I ripped the cartridge out of the system and promptly returned it back to the video store. It might be a good game, I'll never know...

Tempo is the only 32X game I actually like. When it was released, nothing looked like it... until a few months later with Yoshi's Island. Still, so many games at that time were so obsessed with 3D and "realistic" graphics that it was nice to see something that played with the fact that it was a VIDEO game. In 1995, that was very welcome.

I disagree about there being so many platformers that we don't need tempo. I'm glad the review ended being that we should try it. It looks a thousand times better than greendog or cool spot.

Always liked this game. Too bad the 32X didn't have more of these kinds of games. What could've been!

It's a cute platformer that deserves more recognition!

I never played Tempo on 32X till many years later. I was lucky to get a loose cart for $26, but that was a few years back. I like it for what it is. I also have Tempo Jr. I wish I could get Super Tempo, but not at the price that it's going for these days, sadly.

Saturn one was pretty good too

And a better game. Tempo could've been a launch or near launch title for the Saturn if sega cancelled the 32x add-on.

I like this game. Good job as usual SLX. FYI, you can see remnants of Bonk in this game. See if you can spot them.

Tempo is one of the few games I've picked up for my 32X. It has jank for sure, but it has tons of personality. Also the US box art is a prime example of the "American Kirby is Hardcore" trope.

Yeah that cover is 90's AF. It looks like they crossed the original cute Japanese version with streets of rage or something.

Tempo's title theme song sounds like something from some animated series.
