This is a really great talk. Bringing in the extra images and references to the discussion is excellent - thank you. And I really like your illustrations, you have an eye for distillation. I read this book because I have spent significant time inside Bedlam (Maudsley) itself, and among the conditions of my release were that i display some indication of being interested in the consumer economy. It was certainly a place of confinement and punishment, first and foremost, that hasn’t changed.

I've watched you're goffman videos last year , they were amazing. I'm very happy I came across this video while searching for some clarifications on Madness & civilization (got abit lost on the chapter about passions). I really loved the last part where you were examining the meaning and categories those outside of confinement derive from the different groups being confined. (beyond reason and unreason) Foucault goes into depth on the christian morals regarding idleness and poorness and how they intertwine with the great confinement. Does Marx write on similar "institutions of terror" and their function driving the work force to conformity\lower standards? I'm pretty unfamiliar with marxist text, would appreaciate if you could direct me to a chapter that delves the subject :) Great lecture APPRECIATE IT!

I am glad that you are finding these lectures helpful. The next recording in this series covers Marx's chapters in Capital, Vol. 1 on the great confinement. I think this link will take you to directly to that discussion: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJa8eGOLfL5mq6c
