@@the_Relentless_Few Sorry, I still need to make a video on it but it has been raining almost every day. The battery is good, probably not as great as the comparable Ryobi model BUT it's also 1/2 the price. I can do my whole yard with it and still have some juice left so it's good enough for me.

@@SeidelRanch the problem with buying anything lithium ion these days is anything not a oem brand is likely to just lie about the ratings. If you search "Project Farm" he did a good video comparing off brand batteries to originals, can't remember what brand he used but it might have been DeWalt and DeWalt off brand batteries he was testing. If you watch his review you may be able to find cheaper knockoff batteries for ryobi made by some of the same companies that performed well in his tests.

Key to battery life is to not let them get heated.hot summer days and running the mower till it runs out of juice is what kills your batteries performance. I got three batteries I mow a section the switch batteries to let the first cool down. I try not to run them to empty. I’ve had this exact mower for 5 years and killed my first battery.ryobi warrenty covered it they emailed me an online gift card for the full price. I was able to get a 5ah battery(upgrade) I still use the other two original batteries I got 5 years ago. Like u my wife was the driving force behind my switch to electric. I’m so glad she did. When I switched from self propelled gas mower to ryobi I found I could get the job done faster because of the lighter weight. I mow not only my yard but my mothers, and rental property yards as well this mower has more than exceeded my expectations. It ever held up to the abuse I put it through when one I let one of my rental units got neglected because no one was renting it at that time. Weeds got over two feet tall and thick.

These batteries start losing power the moment they come off the charger. I have owned 3 batteries and they all do that. My batteries for my saw from another company do not do that, once I charge them, I can leave them alone and use them days later. Not these ryobis.

Thanks for the thorough review--and especially for mentioning the rodent issue. Hadn't even thought of that, and I've had rats damage my car a couple of times, which cost quite a lot to repair. 3rd year owning mine, the lawn area of my garden is small, and I get two full mows out of one battery charge. It's lighter than my old gas mower, easier to maneuver, takes up less space when it's stowed, and doesn't leak fuel or oil when left on its own. Don't miss having to have a can of gas on hand or the drive to refill it with the accompanying smell permeating through the car. As I've gotten older, don't have the zip i used to have pulling the starter cord, got a bit tiring at times, and no more $65+ a year maintenance cost. For me, perfect little machine, only downside is it won't cut the grass on its own and demands I be part of the process. If I had a big yard, I probably would have passed on this machine but horses for courses, I wouldn't drive from NY to Fl in a sub-compact either. Right tool for the job, well happy with mine.

Tips for longer lasting batteries. Dont let them deplete down all the way. Buy two batteries and when mowing your lawn use each battery halfway and then charge them. If you only let your battery cycle down halfway and then charge it should last you years. It's a pain to have to change out batteries often but your bank account will thank you.

I have a hill in my backyard and the grass grows very fast. Ideally this lawn mower is for if you are willing to buy another battery and don't need some heavy duty cutting. It works for what it is but if you do have a lawn where the grass grows quickly, you're going to want something a little more heavy duty. Good for what it is, just I find myself having to span the lawn mowing over multiple days with one battery.

I have ryobi 40v devices, I thought for a second about this type of mower. But here is the deal. I would like to see how long battery lasts when you actually use the bag for an entire yard of grass and not a few weeds like most of these reviews seem to show. Also I have found the weak plastic parts break often. We are talking switches even the wheels fall apart or wear out quickly because they arent rubber but a plastic material. Its great that it is light but that usually means inferior cheap plastic. I really wanted to see some benefit to this type of mower but the more reviews I see the more I am turned away. My 10 year old mower needs new rear wheels will cost me $52 and I thought lets see what kind of mowers are out there nowadays.
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch 2 жыл бұрын
I understand completely. I still have the gas mower in the shed and use it if the grass gets out of hand. That is where this mower can't cut it, pun intended. I mean, it cuts it; but it really eats up the battery fast. (see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZaVm6GAgaeie6s) So, I would say if you are not a weekly mower that stays on top of all the lawn maintenance, this is not the mower for you. I hear the new high end Ryobi one is much better, but it's also much more. We don't get a lot of rain usually, but this spring Texas got a lot. So much that I was not able to mow some weeks and the grass got very thick. Those cuts were using the gas mower. Now, if you mow weekly and the grass is not too tall, this mower works great. The wheels have held up fine. The plastics have been fine too. The safety switches can be an issue. (see this video and comments: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6elgmSlZdJ5fac) And be careful where you store it. (see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnXZY2ibr6ljiaM) We do bag when we mow the yard, and I think it actually bags better than it mulches. Basically I would say if you mow weekly and keep the yard in great shape, this mower works great for a half acre or less. If you are not on top of the lawn maintenance and find yourself mowing high grass and weeds I would stick with gas. I keep both. Hope that helps.

There is an issue with Li-ion batteries we discovered in the RC hobby. They were not initially designed for high current discharge. They will get hot when discharged with a motor. They must be allowed to cool off completely before recharging, otherwise they won't fully recharge. This could create a memory effect. So, never put a hot battery back into the charger right away. You need to have quite a few batteries to rotate them and then let them cool off.

Out of curiosity, how big were the original batteries (in amp-hours) and roughly how much square footage were you able to mow when they were brand new? @SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch Жыл бұрын
When it was new it had a 4ah battery I believe. I actually got this from a friend that had issues with it and he could not figure it out. I took it as a project and found rats had eaten the wires. I fixed it and he never wanted it back. He kept the battery though. I had a 40v trimmer that had a 2.5ah battery and I used it with that. That 2.5ah battery could cut my whole yard when it was new. I have 1/3 an acre at my city home, but it has a pool and a lot of landscaping so the mowing part of the yard is rather small. Probably 5000-8000 sq ft of yard. After a year or so it was down to about half the yard. I hear the batteries have gotten much better now through. Ryobi is great about making new tools to use their battery systems. If the snow blower does what you want you can always find 40v tools to go with it. The chainsaw is nice. There is an auger. The trimmer is good too. Check out the Home Depot site and look at all the tools they have for 40v.
@ianbui5356

@@SeidelRanch Oh okay. The snowblower comes with four of the 6Ah batteries and the mowing area of my yard is at most 2-3 times larger than yours, so it sounds like those four batteries plus whatever comes with the mower would last awhile. The other 40v tools are good thoughts. I may be focused on snowblowers and lawnmowers since the gas-powered ones I have are getting older and frequently have issues, but the ones you mentioned are possibilities. One follow-up question I have is whether your lawnmower is still running well a year later. It looks like it has largely plastic construction. I do have one of Ryobi's 18v trimmers, but I'm a little concerned that the kind of plastic used in its guard might not be rugged enough for a lawnmower. On gas took 15 minutes 😆 🤣 😂.

After two years, battery fully charged, but it works for few seconds and stops, and it just keep doing it, do you think it's a battery went bad or lawn mower?
@SeidelRanch
@SeidelRanch 3 жыл бұрын
After you charge the battery, run it for a little bit and get it to die. Then check the battery status by clicking the buttons on it to see what charge it has left. If the battery is not showing 100% charge still, then it may be a battery that is no longer holding a good charge. If it's saying 100%, then there is probably a safety switch acting up on the mower. Either way, if its only 2 years old, it should all still be under warranty so I would call or bring it to Home Depot to fix it.

I bought one just like this. It broke on the 29th day of the 30-day warranty. The second one broke within 2 years. The handle broke and needed multiple screws, nuts, and bolts, and it will no longer start. I bought a 40 volt ryobi weedwacker which lasted a month before falling apart, and a 40 volt ryobi leaf blower, which completely broke within 2 months. Stick with gas. My old gas lawn equipment lasted decades.

@SeidelRanch It may sound like that, but I was actually very gentle with all of it. On less than a quarter acre with level ground and low-cut grass, the equipment should not have fallen apart like that. If equipment fails under such minimal use, it was junk to begin with. Gas equipment is far superior and built to last.

That is true, a good gas mower will last you a really long time with maintained. My dad had a snapper that I would swear was 100 years old but it still worked great. Even these cheap mowers from the big box stores can last a while with good maintenance, but many don't do that part. I see mowers on the curb all the time that look almost new. Usually an oil change and carb cleaning and they are running again. That said, electric does not have that maintenance so it's probably better for a large amount of homeowners.

@@SeidelRanch in other words you need to run the battery till it died before the 3 years are up? I just ordered this mower, a Ryobi 40v weed whacker, and an extra 5 ah battery, with the 3 battery charging station. I have consistently needed to clean the carbs on both push mowers every year, and it's getting to be annoying having to deal with them. I have a gas powered rider mower that almost never needs it's carb cleaned, but need the push mowers to be able to do the areas directly around the house because the slope is scary to use the rider on.
