Seiko 5 SRPD75 Review - The Seiko 5kx Suits

Welcome back to yet another Seiko 5 review! It's been almost a year since I reviewed one of the newer Seiko 5 releases (previous one was the SRPE53). It was long overdue to get my hands on one of the controversial 5KX models, since it's already around 2 years since their release. This entry-level Seiko offers some great value for your money with solid specs and great looks. It's no Seiko SKX replacement, but I strongly believe it's not supposed to be that either (this will be apparent in the video). I think the new Seiko 5 line is a solid move by Seiko in order to target the younger potential watch-enthusiasts! Hopefully as many as possible will choose a solid Seiko instead of the fashion brands we all love to hate!

I personally think that it's Seiko's best looking divers watch. 100m water resistant is far more than I will ever need. I'm about to order the black dial version. Great review. Thank you. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

The only real choice between the two IMO is paying $400+ for an SKX with an inferior movement or the $160+ 5KX with 100m less water resistance. People line up to pay thousands for a 100m Rolex, so what's the problem? Great video.

That’s pretty much the choice to make! SKX pf course also has the ”heritage”!

Good review. I agree with the unnecessary hate that 5KX got when it was released. In generally the specs are totally ok considering the watch price and major target audience. But I guess the big issue was that it's using the SKX form factor and it was launched around same time SKX production was stopped so it looked like replacement and cash grab for Seiko to provide less spec'd watch for the same price range. Just as afterthought, I think the Seiko 5 Sports launch could have been more approved by enthusiasts if started with 40mm "DressKX" lineup that would not have been so heavily linked to SKX series.

That’s a good point actually! I agree that the DressKX would have gotten a more positive reception. The new Seiko 5 branding and everything with that could have benefitted from that. It will be interesting to see if something will ”replace” the SKX. There are already so many Seiko divers in that price ballpark. At least we can be sure that a SKX re-issue is waiting down the line with a hefty increase in price😂

I've seen a few reviews on this particular watch and many have made a big point of the only 100m water resistance and non screw down crown. But I think you explain it well...this watch is NOT meant to be a Dives watch...but a Dress watch. I have a fair collection of watches (Just over 150) and I chose to buy this watch because of it's overall stylish look and the Milanese bracelet...which looks quite good on it. I like the way you show the watch with various bands, very helpful if you are thinking of buying a different band! All in all a good review of what the watch is and what it is designed for!

Great review Anders, I think you hit the nail on the head with two points - first, this is not meant to be a tool watch but rather a fashion accessory. That's why it has so many colorways and so many pop culture themed limited editions. I think it's a great thing, because it will Inevitably draw more young people to the hobby, ones that would otherwise have bought a dreadful fashion watch. This is a great alternative to those kind of watches, and it speaks to avid watch collectors as well because of it's SKX roots. Second thing is that you shouldn't pay retail for these - any retailer would probably give you a discount for it if you'd ask for one, and you can find them second hand for much less than the MSRP. I ended up selling my 5KX because I wasn't a huge fan of the colorway, but this olive green one looks very good! Well done, keep it up!

I hope the 5kx and other Seiko 5’s will save as many beginners from the scammers🙏🏻 I once worked a short time at a store that sold watches, jewellery and accessories and I was shocked how many people just bought Chinese ripoff watches for hundreds of euros. I did the best I could to try to sell value for money watch instead but people were really determined to buy the fashion watches😂. Felt bad every time. They looked fine but the prices were just ridiculous for what you get. There was a good comment here about the timing of discontinuing the SKX and releasing this 5kx series, which probably caused some extra hate because people were disappointed that the SKX was canned.

Nice one. Agree with your point on the water resistance. Beside the target group, I think Seiko has calculated their price strategy and product positioning very well. Offering a real diver at this price point would give hard times on their other divers that go up from 500€. And for somebody who is still not ok with the WR rate, I would suggest the Dress KX line. For a non diver the 100m turns to an advantage immediately. Without a bezel ring you don’t have alignment issues and the size is very great with only 40mm. Funny thing is, that while Seiko was trying to seperate divers from non divers with different price points, they have created the best value proposition in the Seiko line up with the Dress KX. Comparing it to the new Alpinist line up, the only difference seems to be the sapphire since WR and 4R movements are identical with the Dress KX and of course different finishing. But what keeps a diver enthusiast away from buying the 5KX does not keep the field enthusiast away from buying the Dress KX.

Great points! Seiko might still struggle with alignment issues without bezels because they still need to align the indexes with the chapter ring (which failed with my 5kx)😂. I think the new alpinists have the 6r35 movements but I still agree with that point. Overall, the DressKX is a great value prop and indeed something that doesn’t get the ”SKX-replacelent hate” like the 5kx lineup does😁

Beautiful watch and great review , i already have the Ice blue and Champagne and i will be looking for this green one . I always buy Made in Japan versions and i don't have the alignment issues . Quality control is perfect with Japanese version .

That will be a nice trio! Sounds like you have been lucky with the alignment! That’s great news, but my own experience with made in Japan versions is quite the opposite. Several Seiko 5’s I’ve owned have had the same issues despite being the J variants🙄. They were olders Seiko 5’s and I’m glad to hear that Seiko might have improved a bit in that regard😊!

I like the video I just wanted to point out that this is not the SKX case, it's a slim case and it came out in 1978 with the Seiko 7548. The SKX is from 1996.

I have this watch, and I love it, but hate the mesh bracelet. So today I put the watch on a green NATO strap, and it looks much better. Nice review!

Yeah and I get where that is coming from. The SKX is a legend. However, the prices are pretty similar at the moment due to SKX output decreasing. Now there’s a choice to either go with the certified diver with outdated movement, or fashion accessory with better movement. Matter of preference but I find the value proposition almost equal👍🏻

@@NordicWatchChannel it’s a fair point, I suspect that the gateway to this mad hobby isn’t Seiko anymore, possibly Orient, I suspect that is the corporate plan, whether it’s the defender, kamasu, bambino or triton, it’s a compelling offer.

That’s a possible theory! Seems to me like the Seiko corp is letting Orient take over a larger share of the entry-level offering, moving Seiko upwards..

@@NordicWatchChannel it’s a sound strategy, but not with the current level of Seiko QS issues and general meanness (unsigned crowns, cheap clasps, hollow end links or occasional lack of quality glass etc)

Anybody that digs the skx or these seiko sport 5s..scope out long island watch Co and marcs line of his long island watches.he offers the same dimensions but with upgraded parts.such as sapphire crystal and ceremic bezels for the same prices of some of these Seikos..i couldnt believe it until I ordered my first long island driver..and.now I own 12 of them

ive ordered the black one, ive send it back, its to small for my hand and i didnt liked the color! It was to brown for my taste, i thought the face will be darker and not that bright brown.

I wish the models with white chapter rings came with the traditional bracelet. The blue model comes on a rubber strap. I’d rather have the Seiko bracelet.

Yeah I get what you mean. The bracelet would always be preferable.. now you just have cough up some extra mobey to get a bracelet separately.😓😎 Do you mean the oyster bracelet (often found on these) or the SKX jubilee btw?

@@NordicWatchChannel The new oyster bracelet, but the blue with white chapter ring on comes with a rubber strap. The fully blue model comes with the bracelet. I wonder how hard it would be to find a Seiko oyster bracelet?

@@timyoungnc my guess is that it’s pretty easy. Lots of people swap them out for aftermarket bracelets of higher quality so probably many selling the original one! I would probably go for an aftermarket bracelet too. And since the case is the same as on the SKX007/SKX009, there are tons of alternatives out there!👍🏻

I've been curious about the 5KX since they came out and want to buy one this year. Great reviews! We have the same size wrists so I always appreciate seeing how watches look on your wrist.

I think it can be pulled off, but it wouldn’t be my first choice. Also depends on your wrist size. If you have a 6,5 inch wrist like mine, it might be a little big to wear with a suit. But of course it’s all about preference and what you are used to!

@@NordicWatchChannel I have 6.5 inch wrist. I'm thinking of getting Beige Dial and switch to Brown strap while keeping the Green one as it is. Haven't found anything appealing and available here in India under $1000 with day date feature and vintage feel to it. I wear Business Casual Suit, Party Suit and casual outfit. Not sure whether this Suit series looks good on the suit.
