I am not a huge classic watch fan, but jesus this seems to blow all of Seiko's current lineup out of the water. What an amazing piece

Look out for the Gold feather, the world's thinness caliber in 1960 @2.95mm tks with a case thickness of 7mm. This probably even harder to find in good condition. Superseded by Citizen Diamond flake in 62' @ 2.75mm but case thickness is the same.

I purchased one of these with the same emerald face in Hong Kong in 1974 when I was 16 years old. Paid HKD320 from memory- about 42 Australian Dollars back then. I’m now 62 and live and work in Hong Kong and still wear it occasionally. Beautiful watch and it is still going strong and never been opened.

This is evidence that servicing watches frequently is not necessarily needed. Great story 👍
@spidiq83 жыл бұрын
Please please do that watch a favour and get it serviced. It's a mechanical device, an engine, a machine, they have moving metal parts, they need to be inspected and serviced, just because it runs doesn't mean it's not in need and I can assure you that if it hasn't been opened in almost 50 years any lubrication in there will be nonexistent or grinding paste. These movements alone are incredibly hard to get hold of as are spare parts and you could pay as much for a movement as a whole watch nowadays. I'm not just saying this as someone who works on watches and services them, but as someone who also collects, wears and appreciates vintage watches.

You forgot to mention another fascinating aspect of the 7016, and thats the sweeping hands of the chronograph subregisters. They dont jump like the 6139/6138 from Suwa. Daini was just on another level.

Beautiful watch with great and practical features. Flyback is a very nice bonus, look at Breguet's cost for having this feature. Way more...but that is an entirely different watch. A real standout watch, great video! 👍

A fascinating and well presented video. I had no idea how innovative and ahead of its time Seiko was with this movement. It’s technically marvellous. Given the vast range of diver watches there are inc by Seiko itself I am surprised given the current popularity of nostalgia and retro that this movement isn’t re-launched. Added to the square case which is even rarer nowadays (only the Monaco comes to mind in mechanical watches) this is a fabulous watch. Thanks fir highlighting it.

Thanks for the kind words and I'm always glad to find someone else sharing the same thoughts on how cool Seiko was 😁

@@WatchGeek I have a watch collection and among it are several Seiko and several microbrands with Seiko movements. My 1964 Seikomatic is a great watch with some nice features given its age. My 2020 Prospex King Samurai is also well made and compares favourable in terms of looks with the Omega Seamster 300 with its waffle dial. The Seiko I'd like to own is a Co. Pogue with yellow dial and Pepsi bezel.

I was also interested in the pogue but found the black dial coke bezel much better looking in person

Great timepiece. Seiko (6139) almost beat Zenith’s El Primero in the race for the first automatic chrono movement. Some argue that Seiko was actually first. Later Seiko introduced the first quartz chronograph.

was hoping that you'd expound on why keeping the chrono running was an advantage with the vertical clutch system. otherwise, great vid.
@BuildAmpersandBreak2 жыл бұрын
I think it was because it allowed you to get two time zones but idk looks too tricky
@WatchGeek2 жыл бұрын
Missed your comment and now read it once someone else commented, it's due to the fact the clutch is in its "sprung" or "loaded" position when the chrono is not running and is in its "unloaded" or "relaxed" position when it hooks up the chrono, thus having the chrono running is better for the clutch. It's like having the clutch constantly pressed on your car, that's how it is when the chrono is not running.

A very good review. I have several restored 6139 and 6138 Seikos and the “Monaco” is really great but becoming a little bit too expensive. Of course all of these are to a point. Finding one in good shape is slap a challenge.

So true but it makes finding one even more rewarding because of that. What 6138 do you have? Jumbo, 🐼, kakume or UFO?

Great review! I have one of these from my dad's collection that was purchased in the Middle East. What's interesting is that you can choose either Arabic and English for the day setting. As for running it, is it better to leave the chrono running all the time rather than stopped?
@WatchGeek6 жыл бұрын
The general rule is that on these it's better to leave it running as the clutch is under tension while the Chrono is not running
@markthibault85796 жыл бұрын
@@WatchGeek Thanks! I enjoy seeing the second hand move as well so it's win-win on both fronts by leaving it running.

A couple of questions... With this movement, is it ok to move the hands backwards to set the time? Also, does it matter if the chrono is running when I'm setting the time?
