I was on a holiday in Japan, where I bought one of the most famous model of Zenith - which I already did a lot of research about it before - which I thought that it was one of my dream watch. Now it's time to go home. I was in the airport. Then I saw this beautiful piece. I bought it. Even though I know it was against my principle to 'never buy watch impulsively', I bought the Alpinist. Fast forward to present time. I love my Alpinist more than my Zenith.

Bought this watch last December and I absolutely adore it. Such a classic style combined with a solid and robust movement, every time I feel the urge to look/search for another watch I grab the Alpinist and ask myself if I really need another watch. I was also surprised how well it goes with a wide variety of straps/colors. Red/brown like the Hirsch Liberty strap make the whole watch pop and a nice vintage black strap makes it look very subtle and classy. A definite keeper and a future classic.

I have this watch and she is a real beauty. She is as beautiful in real life as she looks in the videos. Most of the gripes that people talk about are true but they are minor compared to the great finish and features of this watch. My only wish is that Seiko could add an applied gold surround for the date window, it would just finish off the dial and balance the symmetry. It would raise its class threefold. I still love it and I cannot stop looking at that fantastic green sunburst dial!!!

I have no vested interest in the brand, don't work for them, just a satisfied customer. Absolutely some of the finest leather watch bands on the planet...and the Olive Green stitching on this high quality leather - a perfect match for this watch! Check it out.

Ah, the forum darling of forum darlings -- the Seiko Alpinist. I agree with Bruce that this one will end up being a minor legend amongst Watch Nerds. It's a little too small for my wrist and what many find is that it is hard to match with clothing, so one can often pick these up on the used market as owners realize that it isn't getting much wrist time. But a beauty it is and it will probably go out of production soon. Great Utah scenery there, Bruce. I love the American Southwest.

Lee K: Why do you think it will "go out of production soon"? The Alpinist has been around for many decades, why would Seiko drop it now?
@Lee_K_5555
@Lee_K_5555 6 жыл бұрын
For the same reasons that Seiko phased out all the Cocktail Time (SARB065) variants and reissued a new line with a 4R35 movement (SRPBxx), the Alpinist line with the 6R15 movement has been gradually reduced to just this one green dial variant, the SARB017. I don't believe it will be long before we see a new line of Alpinists with similar styling, but with a 4R35 inside instead. I could be wrong -- only Seiko knows what their product plans are, but the pattern is familiar.

Could you imagine if the prospex line all had 6r15s 28,800 vph.. I love the samurais, turtles, etc with 4r35s 21,600 vph. But the 6r would really be an upgrade. Get rid of the hardlex, and slap on a sapphire crystal.. man you'd take a great series and make it an exceptional one (prospex). Also, the Alpinist is stunning and I want one lol

I’m elated with my Alpanist purchase but I wanted to mention positional variance and accuracy: my watch gains about 1.5 seconds a day after 3 months of daily wear but I’ve found if I rest it FaceUp at night, it gains about 1.25 seconds, CrownUp loses half a second and CrownDown loses 2 seconds. Suffice to say, I’ve been able to regulate the watch to stay within a couple of seconds accuracy without setting the time for the last 45+ days!!! YMMV.

Very nicely filmed review. Agree with all your comments other than your nit-pick about the solid case back. Yes, we're all different, but I love the simple, no nonsense, solid case back and it's one of the factors that makes me like this one so much over say, the Hamilton Khaki. Would have been easy to stick on a clear case back and make it 100m WR, but ISTM that Seiko did a proper job here and haven't skimped on the WR rating. Gives me confidence in the build quality for the rest of the watch. Besides, clear case backs are for the easily amused... Nevertheless, another well done 'I watched it twice' overview, Bruce.

OK, I just now (28 October 2020) received a SARB017 purchased from Amazon USA for $475.00. I ordered it the day before yesterday and 24 hours ago they were no longer available from Amazon, so I suppose I got one of the last they had. All of them are showing up at more than $900 on Amazon now. It is a beautiful watch. I also bought the Strapcode brushed and polished bracelet. It's about $20 more than the brushed only bracelet, but it is not available from Amazon. Mine was sent via Fedex from Hong Kong and actually arrived about 2 hours before the watch did (by USPS parcel post) although it was ordered several hours after the watch was. Despite what people say, the leather watchband that came with the SARB017 is fine. No problem at all. So, what is the difference between a SARB017 and say a 11610LN? First, the price, of course. They are both beautiful to behold, and no photographs on line do the SARB017 justice. But the 11610LN is also beautiful to behold. Still, they both have a look of quality. Next, the LN11610LN has a functional rotating bezel, which I never use except as a timer above water. I am a ROV pilot, not a diver. The SARB017 has a rotating bezel which could be used as a compass (I doubt I'll ever use it for that) but it rotates in both directions, so I can use it both as an indicator for ET and countdown. It also serves as a GMT indicator. Then, there is the fact that the LN11610LN goes down to 300 meters, and the SARB017 goes down to 200 meters. I rarely stick my arm more that a full arm's length underwater. Finally, the SARB is out of production and if I don't scratch it up I can sell it for more than what I paid. I've already been offered $600 for it. Of course, the 11610LN is still in production, but I can probably get what I paid for it. I don't plan on selling either. OK, I can feel a difference when I wind and set the time between the two. The Rolex just feels smoother. $7500 more will buy you that feeling of smoothness. But there is NOTHING cheap about this particular Seiko. If you can find a SARB017 for less than $500, you won't be disappointed.

Can't see enough Reviews on this real nice watch...I really hope Seiko stays with the 38 mm size in the future. Besides the mentioned shortcomings I would add the too Light compas bezel action...its super easy to turn the compass by accident. Otherwise its one of the rather unique watches and a good example that lower end watches can be as exciting and interesting as much more expensive watches.

Ron Power - Yes, the compass bezel moves too easily. But keep in mind the compass should only be used for getting your bearings. Once you move from the exact spot you were on when you set the bezel, it's no longer accurate anyway.

at first I thought it wasn't supposed to be like that. But after awhile got used to it, unless those that have OCD will probably be annoyed, it never stays in the middle. But anyways happiest purchase I made. To think I wanted to start collecting, but living with it every day I'm still appreciating how handsome it is. The only downside is you'll need a beater for those heavy duty days. Too painful to see it dinged up.

great looking and well built. I rotate between straps and a 3D oyster. Versatile. PEACOCK beware...this watch will not garner the attention you may require. After 9 months, I have not received a single comment, good or bad, on this timepiece including from my wife. I have worn proudly and quite visibly with polos, tees or rolled up sleeves in close proximity to 100s of co-workers friends family and strangers. Zilch, to the point that it has become a running joke with my son. I will continue to wear this very cool watch and perhaps one day I will come across 1 of the 46k subscribers of this channel and I will hear the words "Nice watch man.". I will laugh and celebrate the milestone with a beer

Well that’s the only negative that KZbinrs point out. It is a crime for put a $15 strap on a $700 watch, cmon Seiko. I think a lot of people (myself included) aren’t a fan of the green tone. To each their own though, it’s a fun hobbie.

It's a cool watch and I like the look of the bracelet combo but that bracelet has a lot of gaps at the lugs and clasp. My other SARB bracelets are the same. Hope the strapcode version is better.

Solid watch. The thickness was too much for me for a field watch for daily wear.

Prefer the leather over the steel bracelet, Watch Gecko has some nice options in leather.

I have one myself and love it but I have 2 negatives: 1)The sapphire crystal has tones of glare. 2) I dont like how the crystal sits slightly above the bezel. I think it gives the cystal an aftermarket look and feel. Besides that, perfect watch dont even mind the strap or case back.
@Wertsicherung

bellaaneke Thanks for the hint with the crystal sitting above the bezel. That would not work for me besides the diameter. Too small!

bellaaneke definitely true. It could benefit from some ar coating. I like the proud crystal. Reminiscent of Rolex

Snuggletummy I have 7.75" and I'm fine with 45-48mm like the Victorinox Professional Diver up to Breitling Nav. GMT. So I doubt whether on my wrist it may look like an Alpinist for a dwarf (in reference to Archie :-)

I think this watch is absolutely beautiful, but I'm still so hesitant to make it my daily wearer because of that green dial. For me it's a choice between this watch and the Hamilton kahki field auto. I'm so torn.

Robert Isaac check it out in reality if you can before you make a decision...I was also afraid that the green would be to much and would not fit many clothes...but in reality the green far more subtle than on pictures.I would say its almost as universal as any black faced watch.
@darrellmayfield4975
@darrellmayfield4975 7 жыл бұрын
Robert Isaac I agree with Ron. The green is subtle enough that it doesn't really clash with anything you wear. Ps...I have a Hamilton Khaki also that rarely gets worn haha the Alpinist is far more interesting.

Same issue! Haha but I'm going for the alpinist. Like these guys said it's a lot more interesting and the green seems to be a more interesting tint. Not like that Irish rolex green but a more natural green

What's your wrist size? It suits your wrist well. I have a 7" wrist, but being a JDM watch I haven't seen one in person or been able to try it on. I've contemplated buying it multiple times, but I'm concerned it's going to wear small.

This watch is so old school and classic that i can't seem to understand why all the praise. Yes the movement is great but damn i feel it gets more attention than it deserves sometimes... But in all circumstances its really a good watch.
