My first automatic watch was the old khaki version, which I got for $40 new four or five years ago. Great watch, and easily worth twice what I paid for it. But for $275 you're closing in on Hamilton money. If they could get it to $200 and include a sapphire crystal, it'd be a lot more tempting.

Time will tell (haha) if this is a value-for-money upgrade or not. I don't think it's quite fair to compare the new model's list price to a very low street price for the older, smaller, less capable model.

Most companies realize that there is more to moving upmarket than simply raising your prices. I don't think Seiko realizes that. Moving up means also an appropriate uptick in specs and quality control. You can get a field watch with a 4R36 AND a sapphire crystal all day long from a well known KZbin guy in NY for $199. Seiko thinks I'll pay nearly another $100 for one without sapphire and that God awful 5 on the front? Keep dreaming. You'll get bupkis from me.

There are far too many versions of these style watches available for less and have a movement comparable or better than the 4r36. Just don't like what Seiko is doing. I may be in the minority, but I think what Seiko is doing with the new 5 range is good. I mean, those "original" models grew to a huge number of variations that cater to so many tastes and needs, that's great and amazing. But they were getting dated. Technically, or sometimes even in terms of design (though timeless, sure...). And there were many, but there was little fun of finding something new. "Everything" was done in the 5 range. Now, with the new range, this is a total reboot. Like the very beginnings of the 5 line. They maybe chose the wrong initial model and upset many people with 5kx, but let's be honest, the updated SKX inspired design looks good and very, very few people are going to dive with them, so what. But the other interpretations they're bringing, those are bringing more and more fun. First came the DressKX, which is, IMO, one of the most versatile watch series ever. Not that classy as a legendary SNKL23, but much more modern, more versatile. I love it. And then there are the new field watches. Also very nice, good "intermediate" size, I think, they're onto something. Yes, the prices are much higher compared to the old 5 models. But well, there the prices were kept down by that aging fact, no investment into the further development of the line. Now, we have it, we have a new fun in the series. Plus they can be found much cheaper, I regularly buy 5kx's as a base for my modding experiments for about 170 USD before tax and shipping from Amazon Japan. In the long run, these will stay very attainable watches, with prices of many micros and others creeping up inevitably, ending in the same position as the discontinued 5 line in a few decades. In the meantime, I'm very happy to observe, what Seiko brings to this line, because some of the additions were really cool. They've upped their game with dial designs and finishes, for example, there are those anime special (and other) editions, that maybe cater to a completely new watch public. And that's cool. Seiko 5 is not staying in 20th century, its becoming an entry level watch series for the 21st century. And I love it. Will be happy those many more watches to come to this line.

You can't compare the grey market value of the SNKs to the retail price of these newer Seiko5 SRPH and SRPG models. The SNK809 and its variants had retail prices of $175. Seiko just overproduced them and so they all ended up on the grey market. Now $100 more for an upgraded movement, better water resistance, and a strap that's worth more than $5 doesn't sound so bad. I personally enjoy the smaller case and bead blasted finish of the older model, but if you like these newer models and can afford it, don't let your reason for not getting one be because the old one is a better value. If we built our watch collections based on value for money alone, we'd all just own dw5600s. Buy what makes you happy.

They are nice. Needed the new movement and better water resistance, however they should be using sapphire crystal at this stage. I'm a Seiko fanboy have 5 divers as I do dive. All with hardlex crystal including my Tuna. I decided to take a chance some time ago and got a Chinese brand Steeldive SD1975 tuna in a yellow dial as it was a stunning colour bought from Steeldive UK. 300m water resistance. I did dive with it as a backup and it's fine. Sapphire crystal, NH35A movement (+7 spd) on a matching yellow rubber bracelet, super bright lume, great build quality....for $110. The bracelet option is a solid link better than Seiko's standard one. My point, if a Chinese brand can give you a very good quality watch with a better bracelet and sapphire crystal using Seiko's own movement for that price, we should expect sapphire from Seiko for those new watches. The Chinese one also lines up. But then again so do all my Seiko's, but I know that's an issue that has not been fixed despite the higher prices.

Picked this one up a few days ago, at a fairly decent price, still not amazing but definitely doable 250eu (it is what it is). However I found it very charming and inviting In person. Honestly it was exactly what I was looking for. Rugged enough in look / style for day to day use, yet clean enough to accompany a step up in “ aesthetic “. The green is darker than it is on camera and in pictures, that it’s almost elegant. The rough texture of the dial is really lovely. And indeed surprisingly enough I fell in love with the legibility of the face via the sword/syringe hybrid hands. Practically perfect. Again it’s only been a few days but it’s really growing on me. I particularly enjoy the highlighted orange pips. And the lume sufficient enough for night use after one quick charge. All in all I’m actually satisfied and the quality of the watch is almost visceral. Happy I picked it up and it is probably going to be my main day to day, and even may replace my tissot chrono… TBD. I can understand the legacy mindset and I also wouldn’t have minded a further price cut, however this watch almost feels it’s price and I’ve quite shockingly gotten several compliments on it already which usually doesn’t happen even for more pricey watches in my collection. So ultimately I say It wears great. Looks just right. Its comfortable to wear. 7.9/10 would recommend (Will update if anything changes)

I don't understand what the problem is with a brand discontinuing old models and refreshing them under new reference numbers. The old Seiko 5s (and SKX) were 20+ (almost 30) year old models. Imagine if any other brand kept a watch reference in production without refreshes for that long! Even Casio does refreshes on their legacy references.

Naw, dude. I have to disagree with you. The SRPH29 is not just a reissued SNK809. I have a 809 and I like it, but the srph29 improves literally EVERY complaint I have with my watch. The case is larger at 39.4mm, more in tune to modern tastes for most people. The water resistance is a serious improvement for people who want to take it for outdoor fun. The movement is up to modern specs. I can do without hacking but I hate a mechanical watch that I can't handwind. The watch has little to do with my humble little 809 which is outdated in every way. The only thing they have in common is the "5" on the dial. And throwing out that ancient $45 price is meaningless. You can't even buy a decent Chinese watch on Aliexpress for that money. The 809 is a $100 watch today and it's worth it compared to the alternatives out there. As for me, though...I think my 809 is for sale now, with the proceeds going toward the srph29. You can find them for closer to $200 on the grey market and it's worth the difference.

Seiko SRPH29 cost only $150 in my country (indonesia), not $275.. Still a good deal tho🤣

I've bought the SRPH23K1 which is the black variant with matching day date window and a milanese bracelet. Nice size and adapts perfectly to my wrist. It has a different and less matte finish than the SNK, mixing brushed and polished, which dresses it up a bit. Overall a nice watch. In my opinion the retail price is high, and to pay that it should have saphire and maybe screw down crown. I was able to pick an offer, which didn't get it to the value for money of the SNK, but was enough for me to buy it, as I had been waiting for an upgraded version of it for quite a while.

LOVE my SNK809. (Especially with a double dome sapphire AR crystal replacement.) The new SRPH29 is not at all the same watch though. It's got a more traditional 'field watch' face with military time subdial instead of a minute dial outside an hour dial...it's physically larger. Looks like a great watch, but it's more than $100 more than the 'new old stock' SNK809s are still selling for. You CAN 'hack' the SNK809 but just putting reverse tension on the crown once you've set the time...the second hand will not sweep with this. The older watch doesn't have the same water resistance and it's not 'windable' without doing the Seiko Shake, but for a much smaller more comfortable (frankly REALLY COOL DIAL) watch that's less money, I think the actual SNK809 is still the better deal.

The 809 was my first watch, and It introduced me to a fascination with these micro machines. I love it, because it was accessable for me as a young man. I also bought an 809 for my younger brother some time later to introduce him to mechanical watches, for this exact reason. I can see moving out of this price bracket as deterring younger generations from finding interest in mechanical watches. It's a shame

Dang...I didn't realize how expensive the SNKs had gotten. I picked up an 805 (green dial) back in 2018 for $48 shipped and always thought it'd be cool to go back and get the blue and cream dials as well. I still love the watch, but it's hard for me to justify paying more than twice the price to get a watch I already have with a different dial color.

The SRPH29 is bigger than the SNK80Xs, has a 4R36, has better WR, and sells for double (not 6X) the price for apparently only in green. Still, no deal. I bought a better spec-d San Martin Type B for ~130 USD instead.

Seiko learning from Rolex and pulling the fake exclusivity move. Stopping production of popular watches only to bring the same watch back at multiple times the original price.
@sushaantsiingh9106
@sushaantsiingh9106 2 жыл бұрын
I think the price is reasonable, because after a few months the price will probably get discounted to around 220 like the rest of the seiko lineup, and you are getting a 100m water resistance and hacking and handwind. There are lots of sapphire crysals for the seiko 5 watches, so for around $220+$35 sapphire crystal and for around 255 you can get a pretty good watch.

I love all these new field watches from Seiko. They are just perfect. I paid $175 for my SRPG37 and it worth every penny. Seiko never actually sold the old versions for those low prices, they were all grey market. Seiko just produced way too much of them and they lost all control over the distribution, it may have been intentional but we don’t really know.

At $275, exactly as you said, there are many other options available (also with 4R movements). If you think Seiko made a mistake with this one, go and look at what they did with the new "King Seiko" - Oy Vey! ! ! That is an almost $2,000 watch with mediocre EVERYTHING and a 6R movement! Its not even close to a decent movement from Seiko. I love Seiko but I really don't know what they are thinking lately.

I kinda agree with that you've said in the video. A lot of Seiko's Prospex watches has 4R movements, which is the same as the Seiko 5! While 6R movements are more and more expensive with only mild difference in dial design (NOT material though!). All the while, as Seiko uses 8L or 6L movements on their watches, those price are near or even exceed the retail price of Tudor BB 58.

Ok so irrespective of what Seiko pulled with the Alpinist and other shit, here is why haters are wrong: 1) (Arguable) The design is a huge improvement. Just google the beige versions and compare. Seiko should just release sandblasted version as well. The size is also perfect! Plus no more Seiko SPORTS on a military style watch. 2) The upgrades are great: - better finishing - better movement (military watch without hacking, give me a break 809) - drilled lugs 3) Comparing to microbrands is straight delusional. ANY microbrand is going to wipe the floor with established brands when it comes to the dead value. This is Seiko though so you pay dor that as well as you do with all brands but the micros. And the brand equity of Seiko is still substantial. I for one will not be missing these old 5 models, they never enchanted me in the first place but I get it if you guys will. This is the first Seiko 5 that is a great looking, solid watch without much compromise. The Sapphire I don't care for since then you need solid AR or go blind from the reflection and with Sapp with AR the price would not make sense.

50 bucks for the old SNK809 was great. In my home country, the cheapest I could get it was for USD 75 back in 2018. I still have it, its not going anywhere. I still wear it. The dimension is great for me (I have 6.25 inch / 16 cm wrist). BUT... Sometimes, depending on the kind of wardrobe I'm wearing, it could feel just a tad too small. Then I would have to wear another watch with 39-40mm diameter and 20mm lug width. This new "SNK" series or whatever serial number it was, if I'm not mistaken, has 40mm diameter and 20mm lug width. I think for some people, if they want to have just 1 watch for everything, this would be a better choice. The price is okay, although I wish Seiko would at least give us sapphire crystal (I know, its not happening). But with upgrade such as more universal size, better movement with hack and hand wind, and 100m water resistant, I would still recommend it to my friends and family. I would even consider buying one for myself.

It may be improved but haven seen it for so long as an entry mechanical field watch under $100 makes it really hard for me to consider it over $200. The watch was and still a staple but so are others. I rather throw in a little extra and get a Hamilton.

Like the SARB and SKX line, they were great while they lasted. Times and styles changed so I wouldn’t consider the new versions as a continuation of the old. Look at them for what they are and decide if they’re worth the price based on their own merit. If it’s a matter of price you can always consider Orient or Citizen for some nice affordable entry pieces. I’m glad I have my SARB 033, 035, 017 and SNK809. I still enjoy them and have acquired some nice higher cost watches since. If you really like a watch, over time you’ll forget the extra money you spent on it and have a watch you’ll enjoy for many years. And think of the other frivolous things you’ve spent that difference on over time that you no longer enjoy. Remember, value, as well as beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Man, I don't even see the two as comparable. Much less a rerelease. I could never pull the trigger on an SNK for myself due to the size and lack of water resistance (I did get my daughter one as she loves it). I never liked the dial setup very much on it either. The SRPG however, is great. Better dial layout. Water resistance I don't have to worry about. Great size when your wrist is 7 3/4. Hacking movement (I don't care about hand winding but I'll take it). This is a whole different watch than the SNK, and it's one I wanted as soon as I saw it.

I love the upgrade but surely the point of this particular watch it is entry level. There's a huge difference between $100 and $250 especially when attracted younger fans to watches. I saw these watches and my first thought was yeah I'll buy one for me then did a double take of would I buy one for someone else to introduce them to watches. The answer is no. These days there are way too many reliable microbrands selling better for less. The improvements are great, much needed but I could name at least 2 microbrands that would offer better bang for bucks than this. Let's see how the price drops in the sales, but I think they've overpriced them for now

I wasn't all that thrilled with the SNK809 after getting talked into it for a first Seiko. No hand winding and you had to wear it every day or fumble around resetting it with that tiny little crown. It was so damned small it looked like I was wearing a Cub Scout watch. I put it on a bund strap and that helped with the wrist presence but the second hand fell off after a year. Since then I turned my field watches over to Hamilton.

The prices will not stay at retail price very long. They are often discounted 15% soon after launch. And a couple months later, you can see them on sale for 25-30% off. So these watches will be closer to $200. I picked up a DressKx for $187 plus tax about a year ago.
