Ow yeah! Seiko just redefined the Seiko Diver's watch, and with that put a whole bunch of other Diver's watches to shame. This is next level watchmaking right here. If you love the Marinemaster 300 but are looking for a 'better' version of that (already pretty great) watch - this is your fix. It's a stunner, in more ways than one.
The watch deservedly won the Diver's Watch award at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, beating a wide range of (much more expensive) diver's watches. I'm not surprised at all, Seiko brought their A-game to the fight and won that battle fair and square.
Seiko's pricing strategy, and with that also the quality they are offering, has been shifting upwards the past few years - a trend which I can ensure you will only continue. How do you feel about that change? Are you ready to reset your perception of what a Seiko can and should really be? Let us know in the comments!
Thanks for watching, always.

Your review really gave me the confidence to take the plunge. I own several seiko dive watches (MM 1968 SBDC063, Turtle PADI Pepsi, Samurai Dark, Sumo Green, and the SKX-007). So I purchased the SNR045J (The green version). I can say with utmost confidence this is grand seiko level. I thought the thickness would be an issue (I sold my Tudor Black Bay GMT because of the lack of comfort due to thickness), however the titanium and design of this watch makes this one of the most comfortable watches I own. The Zaratsu finish is amazing and after six month of ownership wearing it to the beach, golfing, softball, at the office...this watch still looks like it came right out of the box (I cannot say that about any other watch I own). I have a 7-1/2" wrist and wearing this watch it has decent watch presence without being offensive like an Invicta...it looks no larger than a 42mm diver. The crown feel is amazing, it's size is perfect for requiring no effort to grip and manipulating. When screwing the crown in there is no playing with the alignment of threads like in other dive watches...just push and turn. It is hands down my favorite dive watch and I've owned many over the years (Rolex Sub, Omega Seamaster, Tudor Pelagos).

It’s beautiful, except I’m turned off by the enormous crown that’s out of scale. I’ve Hearn it described as a wart, or a horn. There’s no reason for it to be that large unless you live in Alaska and always have giant gloves on while adjusting the time. Funny has none of the other Seikos have that giant growth hanging down. Neither does any other watch brand.

I bought this watch largely based on the strength of this review (and of course the actual watch itself on my wrist). Couldn't be happier with it. The finish is impeccable. The polishing is amazing, especially the contrast between the zaratsu sections and the brushed sections. The weight gives it a real presence yet stays very comfortable on the wrist. The lume is fantastic. The ceramic bezel looks great and moves beautifully. The unrivalled ultra smooth glide of the second hand, and the spring drive that powers it, is the icing on the cake. I had to adjust the date in September, and in 18 days of October so far, it's gained just under one second. Anyone griping about the price: that right there puts it easily in it's price range. You get what you pay for, and with the Prospex LX, you get a lot. The only thing I wish were improved would have to be the clasp. I'm surprised by how much I find myself making tiny adjustments, but the clasp itself is a bit thick. If you could somehow mate this watch with a Pelagos clasp, you'd be pretty close to perfect in my books. As far as I'm concerned, the only real completion for this watch is a submariner. If you took the names off the watches and honestly looked at the specs, I think in many categories the Prospex trumps the sub. Anyone who turns their nose up at this is married to a name and a story, not the actual watch (which is totally fine with me), but if you put this level of finish on a sub PLUS a spring drive movement, demand (and prices) would be through the roof.

I definitely turn my nose, and not because of the name. In fact. I constantly look at Seiko in search of a great divers watch, but their unnecessary thickness is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. This is way thicker than a damn planet ocean which are pretty ridiculously thick as well, but this is just another level. Seiko always manages to scree things up, whether with their blatant quality control (or lack there of), their constant limited editions or even reissuing previous limited editions, ripping Rolex designs as with some of their gmts which look like explorers II’s (something which Seiko should be well above) and their ridiculous sizes.

Great review and a great looking watch. I have 6.75 inch wrists and generally prefer a smaller size watch, but I personally don't get the current obsession with people complaining if a dive watch is over 40mm. I know it's all personal preference, and like I said, I normally like a more compact watch, but aside from water resistance and durability, visibility is the most important factor in a dive watch, and, no one can deny that the bigger something is the more visible it is. I think it looks good on your wrist because of the curvature of the lugs and I'd certainly be open to buying one if I could afford right now. Seiko excel at making a large watch wear smaller than it is by using curved lugs and relatively short lug lengths to offset the larger diameter.

I’ve had mine for a week and I can’t seem to remove it from my wrist. Titanium makes it so light and comfortable and the smooth second hand is mesmerizing. I wore it in line for 14 hours waiting to buy a MoonSwatch in Las Vegas and several people asked about it including a major seiko collector that knew more about it than me.

I’ve handled the green one sbn045 and it’s true those titanium pieces are light as feather and polished to a level of a high degree of horology and movement is beautiful and unique, the dial is so unique and beautiful like a reef. Seiko when they make high end watches they are great for the price and their lug to lug is better than Tudor black bay 41mm and thickness has a purpose since it’s a tool watch with no helium escape valve. Overall very recommended watch and I own the snb049 which is very similar just v]can’t beat the value.
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 4 жыл бұрын
Nice review, however the coating on the Titanium case does nothing to strengthen the case, it merely provides a harder surface than the titanium itself to provide better resistance to abrasion and light scratching. Although titanium alloys are extremely corrosion resistant, they tend to get a "dirty" look to them over time and can still corrode. If a coating is applied , via some sort of special deposition techniques, it can also provide better resistance to corrosion.

The macro shots reveals the perfect application of Lumibrite, well finished indexes on the dial and on the bezel. The Seiko LX diving watches look amazing - maybe the best within the Seiko range. The Grand Seiko diving watches (to me) have always looked a bit "wrong" and awkward in design - a possible exception being the quartz divers that Grand Seiko produced in recent years. As this review is a couple of years old, I think the limited edition Seiko Prospex SLA 055 and 057 (1968 diver's modern re-interpretation) may now be Seiko's best/most beautiful diving watch design - like the LX it's a bit like a "stealth Grand Seiko!"

What an interesting diver! I wonder...at over US$6500...who their market is for this watch as it seems to be competing with Grand Seiko (favorably in specs, I might add). Personally, I'd have put the GS brand on this piece and wonder if that clasp mechanism is the same as the GS SBGA229 that I had, which performed poorly. Cool that you got this watch to review as I imagine it's somewhat rare. And nice video, as usual!

ATX WatchR thanks for the feedback as always! 🙏 Yes - i wrestled with the branding for the first two weeks as well (as you know). From a European general consumer perspective - Seiko is not charging these prices so this will be a long term exercise for them I think for this market (and the US as well). But if you ignore that, ignore the brand brainwashing efforts. This watch is excellent. The clasp performed very well here, Just on the chunkier side. And the bracelet - absolute fire 🔥

I wish the clasps would get an improvement on both high end Seiko and on Grand Seiko
@degriff
@degriff 4 жыл бұрын
100% agreed. That said, Seiko seems to be really listening to the feedback lately (unlike many other brands) so I actually would expect that to get a nice upgrade in the short to medium term. For this watch, while not the most aesthetically pleasing, I found it matched the overall tool watch spirit. But I wholeheartedly agree with your wish!

Lovely watch with a few issues. First it should have been a 42mm case max, 2nd power reserve indicator should have been placed on the back with a see through case back to give the dial a cleaner look, and lastly that clasp is hideous for a watch in this category just look at the clasp on tudor pelagos or rolex sub.

I don't own a Submariner but I do own a Seamaster and despite costing 20 times less, the Seiko still compares surprisingly well, although it's never going to rival (let alone beat) Rolexs or Omegas which are expensive for more reasons than just the brand. It's not a fair comparison, much like comparing a mid-range VW with a top-of-the-range Porsche. It's a great watch though and I wear mine a lot.

Great review and love the watch. However, I feel that this should have been a Grand Seiko release. Grand Seiko is really diluting its own brand image by making this available as a Seiko model.
@degriff
@degriff 4 жыл бұрын
I agree, it is an odd choice and we discussed it here as well, our best guess is that they went with Seiko and kept it center in the 'toolwatch' category. A bit more fancier, a bit less tool-like and it would have been a Grand Seiko. Just our guess

@@degriff Trickle down technology can really devastate the competition. As an angler, I know how Shimano and Daiwa have steadilly let their top of the line reel technology find it's way down to their whole lineup, and they have more or less cornered the market by now.

A Grand Seiko diver of similar specs will be priced at over $10,000. It will have a better movement, better finishing, much better bracelet, more refined overall.
@theguardian3431
@theguardian3431 4 жыл бұрын
@@dennischen8887that's demonstrably false. Regular Grand Seiko divers, meaning non limited edition pieces, are generally sub $10,000.00. Regardless, the point being made is the negative impact on brand perception. The Spring Drive movement is a tier up from all other movements of Seiko and Grand Seiko. Keeping that movement exclusively with the latter, is better from a brand perception perspective.
@theguardian3431
@theguardian3431 4 жыл бұрын
@@JuvoII that's a good point. However, doesn't that only work if the trickle down technology costs considerably less in the lower-end brand, as compared to the higher-end one? In this case, the Seiko LX is in the same price point as the GS diver. The overlap is confusing the market.

@@degriff thanks for getting back to me. This is a big mistake on Seiko's part. Who is going to spend this much and basically get a Grand Seiko, WITHOUT it saying Grand Seiko? NOT me. is this better finished than a Sub? absolutely does this feature more and cooler tech than the Sub? yup as a lifetime member of the Rolex hater club, how many million times is this better than a Sub? 0, because it fails SPECTACULARLY in the area where the Sub (and Seamasters and plenty others) is excellent, and that's wearability. i hope that with the recent 40,5mm "62mas" tributes Seiko has finally realized that you don't compete with watches that can be worn by anyone by releasing chunky monstrosities that can be worn only by the select few. i mean hell, the MM300 is visually probably my favorite diver ever, but that thing looks ridiculous on my wrist. and there's really no reason for it to be like that, as making the exact same watch finished to those same standards, with that movement but with a "normal" caseback, putting it the MM200 ballpark should be a given, not a pipedream that is unrealized for 2 decades now hell, put the GS logo on this SNR029, make it 42mm and 14mm or under thick, put on a display back and you have a luxury diver that would take a very significant piece of the Seamaster cake, not to mention many a people on the Sub waiting list, probably doubling if not more the profits from the current SNR029 let's hope that with those price hikes of recent years Seiko has become a learning animal. highly unlikely but one can hope...
