If I ever was to recommend a Seiko 5 it would be this. It’s very far removed from the SKX , it’s not trying to look like a diver . Great stuff Dave! Ps! Take the day/date away you’ve got yourself a real beaut!;)

There’s a reason I wear one at work, on a construction site. And it’s the Hardlex crystal. I’ve shattered two sapphire crystals. Haven’t managed to damage Hardlex yet. Shatter resistance is more important to me than scratch resistance.

My daughter chose this watch for me as a Christmas gift and my wife paid. My wife wanted to get the Samurai but my daughter chose this same exact model. The watch wears amazing on my wrist and I love seeing it in pictures of me that my wife takes. I have many watches but the fact that my daughter chose this one makes it special. Understanding that it’s an automatic, its not as accurate as quartz. I don’t mind setting the time every now and then

Hands down the best value Seiko you can buy in my opinion. I know the purists were upset that the SRPD was not a true dive watch so this solves that problem. It’s not trying to be a dive watch. Just a nice looking sport watch or GADA watch.

I have this watch with the blue dial. One of my favorites. I don't really care for bracelets, but I have left it on because it looks so great! I highly recommend this over the "dive" style sister watch. Seiko has an original design aesthetic, and it really shows with the DressKX.

Bought my 7548 in the 70s, it's now covered in dents and scratches, wear it every day on building sites, still keeps good time. I agree, it's the design that appealed to me, coupled with the negligible maintenance of quartz. Thank you for an excellent channel.

I'm wearing the gray one with a bright red leather strap. It's a great value proposition and a quality watch. One thing that is particularly satisfying is winding the watch. Loved the video, I 100% agree that this is Seiko's most exited recent release. Heritage never used to be something that I was concerned about but as I've moved through my watch collecting journey I've started to appreciate it a great deal, sure you can get a "San Martin" or something similar with better specs but this is completely original, from a brand packed with heritage and every single part is crafted in-house by Seiko themselves. I've previously owned a blue SRPE53 and added a domed sapphire crystal, Strapcode bracelet and signed crown. I've since sold the watch and purchased several other higher send Seiko's including a Grand Seiko and I still find myself looking at this model, it's just a great overall package.

Gotta love the dress kx, I brought my one a few year's ago and swapped out the crystal to a domed sapphire. That bracelet is folded linked trash so I replaced it with a strapcode Super-o Boyer. The watch had a job to do, in order to complete my suit and tie for my mum and dad's funerals, as I didn't think one of my g shocks was appropriate wrist attire for that occasion. I was very surprised at the amount of modding parts available for this watch.

It's interesting how personal this is - I'm not a fan of the gold dial decorations (logo, hands, etc) with the silver case, but I really like the SRPE55 as a sleeper. 40mm is a sweet spot. Send the stock bracelet to metal recycling though.

I have the blue dial variant. Straight out of the box it keeps +3 seconds a day. I think the bracelet is brilliant with typical Seiko polishing standards (aside from the pressed steel clasping hinge). Hollow end links keep the weight down. (If you’ve ever worn a Tag on a bracelet you’ll know what I mean). To me this is a quality alternative to the Tudor Black Bay Heritage. In my humble opinion, the watch doesn’t need modding.

It's a fantastic, affordable, GADA watch. And yes, can be found on sale for around $200. In many ways it's similar to the Black Bay 41 (diver-derived every day watch), but at less than 1/10 the price. The main downside is the bracelet. I do wish Seiko would upgrade their bracelets across the line from Seiko 5s all the way to Grand Seiko. It's a relative weakness of theirs. These DressKXs look great on a jubilee. Islander Watch sells an affordable version (~$59), and Uncle Seiko has a nice one as well, but more expensive.

Hardlex isn't that bad, I've worn mine almost daily for 2 years.. hundreds of hours of manual labour around my old house and the crystal is clear as day. Glare is pretty minimal as well. This a great watch for the price. I've had the gray version (Did Shane at Relative Time label it the "Silver Fox"?).for a couple of years. Two comments: 1. Ya know, I'd prefer sapphire, but at this price I'm not going to complain; despite all the talk I hear about scratches, I've had several mineral crystal watches for years without getting noticeable scratches. 2. My advice is to get the watch on a nato. On this version, the bezel is brushed, less prone to scratches, and you can get a bracelet from Uncle Seiko or Strapcode that fits perfectly and is a much better bracelet than the one that comes with the watch

I was always a Swiss watch collector and never could get myself to buy a Seiko. When there's a Seiko that I would like, I would always revert to just adding a few more money to get an entry level Swiss watch like a Tissot/Hamilton/Glycine/Certina. But this Seiko SRPE57 (gilt) was the first Seiko I ever owned. After that, I now have 6 Seikos.

I bought one of these after years of other Seiko 5 Sports models, including diver style watches. I bought the sunburst grey model which comes on a matching grey NATO strap. The watch looks too good for a NATO, and it came off immediately. This watch defines "strap monster"... every type of nice leather band just looks great. Within a month, I bought a second, the "cement texture" model, again with matching NATO which was switched right out of the box. These two watches with two different dials and several straps of different colors and textures give me multiple combos for dressing above casual level. For all the cosmetics, these watches function perfectly and have enough accuracy that I never check them for the need to correct for deviation. Love this model!

My collection was all quartz and solar because I thought for the money, I preferred the accuracy. The SRPE 53 was the first mechanical in my collection, I have since bought a few other mechanical Seiko models (including the '59 Alpinist you feature on your hoodie), but the SRPE is my daily driver. I think I am going to add a domed sapphire crystal, but otherwise, it's the perfect watch (for me).

I think this watch shines light on the lack of originality in (most) affordable watch designs. The fact that removing a bezel from a dive watch, while maintaining the bold dial face, is SUCH a 'fresh idea' and new look says a lot. I think watch brands lean far too heavily on dive/pilot/field cliches and are frankly scared to deviate.

Design is everything. It is most important aspect of a watch, objectively. Doesn't matter the specs at all; movement doesn't matter, material doesn't matter, origin doesn't matter. Only design. I've always wanted a luxury watch but couldn't justify the price. That's why I turned to gussl, and I'm so glad I did. Their replica watches look and feel just like the real thing, but at a fraction of the cost.

About three years ago, before I saw this one, I bought the first 38mm Islander of the same design, same movement, sapphire. My original SKX007 was just too big and clunky. 36-38mm is what I finally learned is my sweet spot. I replaced the too-blingy-for-me J bracelet with a Strapcode O, and the dive bezel with a $30 pilot bezel. I've been wearing it almost every day since bc it's become my perfect watch. I'll unscrew the crown to skip 31 this month, but otherwise I've not touched it and it's running 11 seconds fast after at least at month. It's got the same handset as the Seiko but for the dive joke tanks at 369, which are replaced with better looking, to me at least, rectangles among the round other indices. And it's got a less gaudy logo than the distorted 5. For $200 this is a great gateway to watchdom if you're looking for something that's totally you. Always enjoy your videos, unless you're doing pieces, like say chromos, which I've already got and seldom wear. And you're the very best on the cool JDM stuff. Thanks.

I have the blue dial. Great casual watch, very versatile. Only problem is the polished bezel and non-sapphire glass, i have to be extra careful while wearing it. That's probably why i wear it less than i normally would

Great vid, as usual, Dave! Thanks for all this great content! I totally agree with all the pros and cons of this watch... I got more into watches in early 2020 with an Explorer (I friggin' dove right in. lol), but wanted something similar to that Explorer for day-to-day yet won't hurt as much if I bang it up a bit, so ended up with both an SRPE55 (silver version with black face) and this SRPE57 in your video (which I have on wrist for past couple days, coincidentally)... note to potential owners that the gold around the markers are more prominent than they appear in your video (not necessarily a bad thing, but they're more noticeable in person). I'm quite easy on my watches and have had no mishaps with the Hardlex yet. For the price point, it's a no-brainer (I got mine on sale at TheBay in Canada for around 30% off MSRP). The simple elegance is striking. The case size works great on my skinny 6.25cm wrist as well.

It does everything, except everything smartwatches do. I don't know how this got recommended to me. The title was misleading for me. But I think I just stepped in the watch world where the fine details matter like with wine and art.
