So many negative comments, mainly from people who have no appreciation of the Seiko brand or its history. This is the ultimate Seiko diver. GS offerings are too blingy and don’t adhere to the legacy of the original automatic Seiko divers. The SLA017 is too dainty for me, I have large wrists so can live with the dimensions of this piece. I’d take this over a Submariner any day of the week. As for all the comments preferring an Omega for the price - I’m about to sell two Seamasters to finance this beauty. What a watch.

You do have a point. People are missing that this is nearly Grand Seiko quality, and is priced to match. But you have to appreciate the history of thenwatch to which it is based on, the 1968 Hi-Beat Diver, which is why this doesn’t wear a Grand Seiko logo.

Nice review, man. Amazing watch and proof that great Seikos don't have to be Grand Seikos. So much nicer than current Prospex models with their unnecessary, tacky 'X' (P/S, I know). Shows us what divers were when they were true tool watches. Beauty follows function.

Really nice review man. One comment, that style of strap is usually referred to as "Waffle strap" in the Seiko community, and not pyramid. They put this watch on that strap as an homage to the vintage seiko divers that originally came in waffle straps like the refs. 6105 or 6217. Keep up the good work!

What always stops me from buying this watch is the alternatives in the price range. You really have to love this design over anything else to accept paying over 4 grand (they can be found cheaper than 5k in Asia) for a movement that’s not guaranteed to be accurate, a silicon strap and that chunky profile. If it wasn’t limited, it’d likely be 3 grand after a year. It’s great for collectors let’s say.

@JustBlueFish

I did throw down the time Grapher. It ran well, but the reason I didn’t really talk about it on the video is because while this particular example might be keeping excellent time there’s no guarantee that one example to the next will be any better than -10 to +15. The results of the specific watch are largely irrelevant if the specifications and guarantee are much wider.

Guy, thanks for doing this review. I really liked your comments and how you balanced them. I found it very objective and professional, even though you did give some personal opinions. I have seen this watch in the flesh, but was not aware of the movement accuracy specs. I think the hands and lume surrounds are gold because that is how the original was. I also think the 44.5mm size is the same as the original. Also, as you pointed out the original would also have had 19mm lugs, like all Seiko sports models at the time. As a tribute to the original, this is a very nice diver. I did however find it thick, but then again if you think about the historical context of the watch, a tool dive watch from 1968, that was designed for durability and able to withstand the pressure of deep dives, the size and design fits the purpose... a tough watch, for a tough guy who can handle a chunk of watch on his wrist.
@JustBlueFish
@JustBlueFish 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think you're right about those aspects of the watch being true to the original. I guess I should have made it clear that I wouldn't have liked those aspects of the original watch either haha. It's all just personal taste on a lot of that though.

Good, balanced review. I am a big Seiko / Grand Seiko fan, but I am a bit perplexed with their direction over the past few years. As you point out, this is not to the same standard as a GS (at the very least the movement is not finished / regulated like one), but its price point is right up there. Likewise the SLA019J1, which is in excess of USD 3,500, or the SLA017 at USD 4,000. Not so long ago, Seiko was offering the SBDX001, also with a less finished / regulated GS movement, with both metal bracelet and rubber strap included, for around USD 1,800. It looks like they are milking the limited edition trend for all its worth. It's a dangerous path to walk, just ask Panerai or even Omega. As for the watch itself, it's far too big and thick for my taste. And the decision to bring the strap to 19mm is bizarre. On my ex-SBDX001, 20mm was already narrow compared to the case. It's even worse on this one.

@@JustBlueFish Just checked out that video - mirrors my thoughts exactly. Also, am I the only one yearning for a diver that is not gigantic? I would love to see a GS diver under 42mm diameter and 13mm thick, possibly in titanium, at around USD 5,000. I'm sure it would sell like hot cakes.

Excellent review. Seiko made many missteps with this release which is very unfortunate. I know Seiko doesn't regulate their movements, owning a SBDX017 (also monoblock) I had to come to grips with whatever accuracy out of the box I'd be getting. For a watch at this price point though, especially taking into account the limited number of pieces, Seiko should have regulated all the movements. Additionally, what they were thinking making the lug width 19mm, I'm sure I don't know. 19mm greatly limits strap choices on a watch that already doesn't come with a steel bracelet. I realize this is a faithful representation to the original, but they could have made small changes to accommodate modern watch wearing practices.

Great video... Very nice watch, but $5,000 is a lot. No bracelet, and an odd 19mm luge size. You would really need to like this watch the way it is to justify the purchase. I recently purchased a Seiko Transocean, which is about 1/5 of this watches price. While it’s using the lesser 6r15, yourgetting sapphire, Diashield, a Cermanic Bezel, and a Bracelet on a very uniquely Seiko diver.

I agree that this watch SLA025 at ~5k and the SLA017 at ~4k are polarizing. Many people wished that Seiko would have released these watches which are truer version of the watches they emulate and what are essentially Prospex watches at more accessible prices. Yes, these each have their own modern reissues, but are not the same. Additionally polarizing is the re-release of the MarineMaster with new model# SBDX023 at ~3k with the addition of sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, gold tone second hand, & prospex tagging and removal of the Marinemaster text. Is all that worth an extra 1K for an SBDX023 vs SBDX017? I don’t know. At these prices, we’re approaching used or possibly new Swiss luxury watch range (e.g. Omega) and Grand Seiko prices.

I like this watch a great deal, even withstanding your accurate criticisms. It is quite a niche piece, mind and hardly represents value for money...I'm wondering what it's for though, 1500 is too high a production level for it to become a "safe queen" investment, and the salty price means only the very well heeled will wear this as its design dictates - casual sports watch.

I would really love to own a hi beat movement some day. Im glad to have watches that are only 3hz for everyday use but it would be great to have something like this that you only wind up and use a couple times a year. I have an omega planet ocean already in this price category so i dont feel the need to get that type of brand name for my money. I can certainly understand where someone buying their first luxury watch they might want a brand name with a little more cache than seiko. As far as the accuracy goes 10 seconds a day is fine with me. Im not sending a watch in for regulation over that. Most watches run better on the wrist then when they are in one position on a timegrapher anyway. Great review! Awesome watch.

I’m still not sure why Seiko underquote their accuracy on the high end pieces. The 8L35/55 are generally +/-3 sec and stay that way for years. I have a beautiful SBDX017 on the way in the post. Certainly better value for money than the majority of the new SLA re-interpretation models, often with the same 8L35 movement. This SLA would have to be up there with Grand Seiko and true Seiko diver fans would fully appreciate it. Even though it’s less of an accurate re-interpretation I’d probably prefer the SLA039.

Having inspected one myself, and as owner of multiple GS plus a SLA017, I agree this is NOT near a Grand Seiko level finished watch. The reviewer is off base there. The dial finishing is so underwhelming. This is NOT a $5000 watch. And it comes only on a cheap silicone strap! Lint collector, and the 100% Exact same strap Seiko created for the (superior) SLA017. Yes a completely recycled part, a part that most people even replaced on their SLA017's because it was simply not up to quality of the watch head. The 017 did include a bracelet. But it was a subpar bracelet anyway.

I don't think $5,400 for that watch is reasonable. It's good that it's got a sapphire crystal, and having a monoblock case is a nice touch. But it's got nowhere near the style and sophistication of a Grand Seiko, and a rubber/silicone strap on a $5,400 watch is batshit insanity. For that kind of money, I'd expect higher-end materials. At least a bracelet. And the movement doesn't sound amazing to me, either. It's not chronometer-level, and as you noted, it's harder to regulate the movement, which would almost certainly translate into more expensive to service.

It's a nice watch. Is just that being a Seiko, the beat of error would need to be zeroed out and reregulated, which would be a royal pain in the ass! Also the lug to lug is to big. At that price that watch needs to be at 0.0 beat of error and + or - 2 seconds a day.

Not a bad watch, but seems over priced. Lots of more prestigious divers out there in that price range. (Oris, tudor.) The High beat is cool, but it should be accurate out of the box. It appears too much like an SKX or a turtle with upgrades than a $5000 watch. It seems closer to a 'dream option' skx, i.e. movement, sapphire crystal, etc.

hello sir, nice video. i'm just curious about the monoblock case like that. are they screwfront bezel or how is it work? is it same like this watch like in this video? kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXi2gaSqrdasm5Y and one more question, what is the meaning of "polarizing" watch? thank you in the future. cheers. :)
@JustBlueFish
@JustBlueFish 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I would imagine it works something like that. I’ve never taken one apart myself so I’m not totally sure. Regarding the polarizing comment. When something is polarizing that means that people generally really like it or really hate it. Like a magnet having a north and south pole, there are only two sides and no middle ground.

@@JustBlueFish I didn't even look at the near $5k price tag on the SLA017, soon as I saw it in the window I knew I had to have it. Will never sell it. @@Romio666 Yes bro, since I wrote that post Seiko have diluted the name of the 62MAS by releasing literally dozens of these re-interpretations lololol. I still think the original SLA017 was the best being the closest to the original. The 037 is fantastic being hi-beat, but it's even thicker at 14.7mm! And I also tried on the SLA043 but the damn thing was misaligned on the bezel. Typical Seiko....
