Seiko SPB143 vs SPB317 [62mas vs Slim Turtle]

Thanks I am stuck between one or the other. This was a very helpful video. The one feature that was new to me was the difference in bezel construction between the two. The 317’s bezel does look noticeably less refined next the the 143. But the ‘stealth date’ and case shape on the 317 is perfect. I will probably end up owning both eventually.

it costs about $20 to have a watch regulated and takes 10 minutes or less. I don't know why people spend 1500 on a watch and then sit back with it running 30 seconds off for years just complaining about it. Its like buying a boat with a hole in it and then instead of getting it fixed you bring a bail bucket on your trip and sit there bailing out water when you could be having a good time.

@@lawrencefleischer1414 Hey Lawrence... I just went to a Clock/watch repair shop. If you have a jewelry repair place around you they might even have the timegrapher also. A pawnshop that sells watches may also have a timepgrapher and be able to regulate it for you. I can't speak for the prices they will ask but its a 10 minute job so if you ask nicely it should be cheap.

​@@lawrencefleischer1414 You should bring your watch to a Seiko authorized dealer because if you are (un)lucky enough that your watch runs out of spec (-15 to +25) they will regulate it free of charge. Another advantage of getting your watch regulated at Seiko authorized dealer is that after it's regulated it is then pressure tested to make sure it is still 200 meter water resistant. My AD quoted me equivalent to around 92 USD for regulating with pressure testing included. I got it for free since my watch was slowing down more than 1 minute a day. Mind you my watch (SBDC101) is 3 years old and when it was new it was running +3 spd.

yeah, I kinda considered the 313 instead, but never had a white dial watch and didn't want to experiment with this new turtle series. I felt like the 317 would give me a good baseline on the watch since i know I like black dials.

Yes that scratch by the lugs are from the bracelet. I have the same on my ssc909 after i removed the bracelet.

I have the 313 and it's fantastic. The shorter lug to lug did it for me. The 143 is... fine. Case is a bit too flat and boxy IMO.

Yeah, the case is a bit boxy on the 143. Although I think it is true to that sixties skin diver look it’s trying to achieve.

Yeah I had the sbdc101 the jdm.version. 1 week and sold it. Too much of a dressy diver i.m.o. now I have the 317 and put it on a strapcode waffle rubber.

I think the 317 does have a slightly domed crystal, it just sits lower then the bezel. I can see the distortion on mine.

The 143 case is much more refined and interesting than the 317, I’ve owned a 147 and now a 213, these pieces are older and available at a better price 2nd hand so a much better value prop than the 317

I think you’re right on the value peice. I do think that that if Seiko included a bracelet (vs rubber strap it comes with) on the 317 at a $650 to $750 price point, it would be one of the better values in their dive watch collection.

I don’t like the thickness of the bezel on the 143. I know this is reimagined, but the original 62MAS appears to have a thinner, more elegant bezel. Nice review!

I was on the fence in getting a slim turtle. It is about $100 less than the 62Mas on the used market. But thanks to your video I’m glad I didn’t buy one. The bracelet, sunburst dial, polished edges, and the bezel just seems more “value” for that extra $100.

Glad I could help. Honestly though, all these months later, I’ve found myself wearing the 317 way more and I think I’m about to sell this 143. Not something I thought I’d be doing when I made this video. It comes down to me just admitting that my style more aligns with the tool watch aesthetics of the 317. But, I still believe the 143 offers way more value.

@Some Movement I have the 143 and keep thinking of selling its a hard one. If could only have 1 watch to cover all bases this seems better than the 317. The 143 seems way more versatile, but I don't only have 1 watch thats the problem if more formal event I would wear dressier watch etc.

I have this spb143. I got it at the exact time they introduced the lume at 3. Bought it stupidly without knowing and ended up tracking down the dial sans lume at 3 and getting my watch maker to swap it out. I have the same marks on my watch from the bracelet. All my watches with bracelets have discolouration from the bracelet. Either on the bracelet itself from the clasp scraping, or on the front of rear of the lugs. Sometimes no matter how careful you are it just happens. Just happened on the rear lugs of my Tudor and I always store it on the cushion. It’s a mystery.

The size of the bezel compared to the dial is just too big on the 143....I thought it was THE one I wanted but when I tried it on, was really disappointed. The sunburst dial is too flashy for me too.

I really like the SPB143, but I have had horrible experiences with the 4R/6R movements in my Monster, Turtle, and SBDC051. All had horrible accuracy and one had winding issues. If the SPB143 had the 8R movement (Seiko's ETA2824/SW200 equivalent)... I'd easily buy it for $1500

Yeah, I hear you on that. Just as an update, the 143’s accuracy has actually gotten a bit better. Around 6-10 sec a day. Also, got a chance to throw it on a friends timegrapher and it showed around 7 sec fast a day.

I'd stay away from all Seiko 6R watches, have to resists the beautiful design, internally its just as bad as 4R movements. This has been Seiko's game for a long time.

Yeah, @saurus, I agree. With it being luck of the draw, makes it hard to plunk down retail price for these. However, buying used makes it totally worth it.

You have a Seiko accumulation syndrome and are very confused. Just get an SPB207 and sell both of these, that watch (SPB207) will erase both of these watches you have now. It is Seiko refined, basically, the 315 and 143 combined. You may not see it now, but you will understand when you have that watch. You're welcome. Any alignment issues are an easy fix if you're unlucky, just pry the notch at 6 or 12 o'clock, pry out the bezel insert with a flathead covered with tape, use a case closing tool to put back the bezel, put a touch of hypo cement on bezel insert contact surface, lock bezel in place with least backplay, apply the bezel insert so it lines up and then press down and that's it. You're welcome again. INB4 a year later you will want an SPB337 or SPB341, those don't exist yet, but the reference numbers will be used.

The 207 isn't a "combo" of these 2 watches at all. I've tried it on in person and it just feels/looks like a regular department store watch compared to these. You're missing the point anyway. He's going for a more slim and minimal vintage tool look, and the 207 is none of those things. Not a bad watch necessarily, but it's apples and oranges.

The bezel thickness on the 317 is very similar to my sbdc051. Nobody remembers them, came out with a larger case diameter And hand set that we’re not 62mas enough. But it’s bezel was very much inline with the sla017. Lume and bracelet also superior to the 143. To the point I couldn’t justify flipping it for the the prettier dial. Oh and it costs more too. But the 143 is a looker. Moral of the story, buy what you want and don’t compare watches😂

I think you can definitely knock the 317 around a bit more. The143's raised crystal will concern me, because I often bang my watches on things, and I think I can easily break any raised crystal of a watch I wear.

I think they can both be knocked around a fair bit. Both have taken a few decent knocks on door jams, door handles, and table tops. So far, neither has shown any kind of scratches anywhere.

It’s from Crown and Buckle. Nothing fancy, just a standard gray nato. But I do like their gray color tone, it’s a little lighter and works well with my black and white monochrome watches like my two turtles.

@@daveLin104 I just felt myself gravitating more towards the 143 and decided I’d rather use the money from the 317 to get something else. The 143 movement just stopped holding power. I would fully wind and it would keep time for about 1 hour and then stop. Probably a broken main spring

The 317 does wear smaller. But, it’s not like the 143 is crazy thick either. Although, for a double pass Nato strap, I prefer the 317. The case on the 317 is 41mm wide vs the 143 being 40mm wide. I think you may be perceiving the 317 as much larger due to it being on a much larger strap.

the 317 is never going to wear thin with two layers of nato underneath. I hate Nato's. (sorry nato lovers) I just can't see the attraction. Perhaps because i'm ex military and they just remind me of that. I think the 317 is the best by far for me. the 143 is cool but its such a no date sub to me. Both fab watches though. I own the 317 and I wear it on an Artem sail cloth with clasp. It looks and feels fabulous to me.
